Beginnend bij een van Glasgows oudste en meest indrukwekkende bouwwerken, de kathedraal van Glasgow, begint u aan een reis door het allerbeste van Glasgow. Als je naar wat er nog over is van het middeleeuwse Glasgow gaat, hoor je verhalen van je privégids over de betekenis van Trongate en hoe het de stad heeft gevormd. Vanaf hier waagt u zich via George Square in het stadscentrum en naar de waterkant om de Finnieston Crane te zien - een icoon uit Glasgows scheepsbouwerfgoed. Vervolgens ontdek je de iconische gebouwen van West End, waaronder Glasgow University en het People's Palace op Glasgow Green, voordat je een bezoek brengt aan een van de oudste wijken van de stad: de Merchant City. Een van de meest indrukwekkende bezienswaardigheden in Glasgow, de kathedraal is gewoon ontzagwekkend. Zittend op de oorspronkelijke plek waar St. Mungo zijn eerste kerk bouwde in 614 na Christus, is het veilig om te zeggen dat er een extreem oude geschiedenis in deze stad is. Veel mensen geloven zelfs dat Edinburgh een oudere stad is, maar St. Margaret's Cathedral in Edinburgh is eigenlijk jonger dan de Glasgow Cathedral die je vandaag ziet, die werd gebouwd in de 12e eeuw.
Tijdens je tour zul je ook ervaren wat er nog over is van het middeleeuwse Glasgow. Als je door High Street loopt, een van de oudste straten van Glasgow, kun je je vergapen aan de oude gebouwen - en misschien de beroemde Tollbooth Steeple zien waar de heksen, dieven en moordenaars van de stad werden opgehangen.
Precies in het hart van Glasgow, is George Square een plek die je absoluut moet zien. Over het hele plein vind je veel standbeelden van beroemde Schotse politici, letterkundigen, militairen en royalty's. Misschien wel het meest opvallende deel van George Square zijn de Glasgow City Chambers. Op een doordeweekse dag mag je naar binnen gaan en je vergapen aan de 3 verdiepingen tellende marmeren trap - die naar onze mening kan wedijveren met de twee verdiepingen tellende trap van het Vaticaan. De architectuur rond het plein lijkt eigenlijk erg op Amerika, en daarom wordt het gebruikt door grote Hollywood-films zoals Fast & Furious en World War Z.
Als je het stadscentrum verlaat, zie je de Finnieston Crane dramatisch afgetekend tegen de rivier de Clyde. Het is een icoon voor de Schotse scheepsbouwindustrie - hoewel het nooit werd gebruikt om schepen te bouwen. Het werd eigenlijk gebruikt om extreem grote voorwerpen op schepen te tillen, zoals locomotieven en stoomtreinen. In de buurt van Finnieston zie je 'Modern Glasgow' met het SECC en The Hydro, een centrale plek voor muziek en kunst.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery, gebouwd in 1901, is niet alleen architectonisch een sensationeel gebouw, maar ook met zijn schat aan informatie en geschiedenis. Hier kom je alles te weten over de fascinerende geschiedenis van Glasgow, van de oprichting tot de handelsgeschiedenis, de industriële revolutie en de opkomst van het communisme dat bekend staat als 'Red Clyde'. Er zijn ook de beroemde 'zwevende hoofden', een levensechte spitfire, een Egyptische tentoonstelling en een uitgebreide kunstgalerie - en zelfs een live-orgelrecital als je het op het juiste moment ziet.
Door West End gereden worden is een geweldige manier om alle bezienswaardigheden te zien. Het is een welvarend gebied met veel prachtige gebouwen en veel verhalen te vertellen. Je gids zal ze onderweg aanwijzen, zoals de oude, gotische Universiteit van Glasgow die werd gesticht in 1451. De universiteit is eigenlijk de vierde oudste universiteit in de Engelssprekende wereld!
Laat je foto maken bij de Doulton Fountain met de prachtige achtergrond van het People's Palace of Glasgow Green Park. Dit Victoriaanse bouwwerk was destijds de grootste terracottafontein die ooit ter wereld werd gebouwd, en bovenop zie je een standbeeld van koningin Victoria trots uitkijkend over Glasgow Green. Je kunt ook het People's Palace betreden als je meer wilt weten over de geschiedenis van Glasgow. Het museum beschikt over een breed scala aan kunstvoorwerpen, foto's, prenten en films over het leven in Glasgow door de eeuwen heen. Let op: het Volkspaleis is momenteel gesloten vanwege een spannend renovatieproject. In 2027 zal de zaal weer opengaan. Het is daarom niet mogelijk om de zaal van binnen te bezoeken.
The Merchant City is een van de oudste wijken van Glasgow en staat vol met verbluffende architectuur. Elke straat is vernoemd naar een beroemde koopman die eind 1700 en begin 1800 zijn rijkdom verhandelde in Indië. Tegenwoordig barst het van de eetgelegenheden en winkels, dus het is een uitstekende plek om rond te lopen en te verkennen.

We had an incredible tour with Michael. He promptly picked us up from our hotel, and from the start, his passion for Glasgow’s history was contagious. He shared a remarkable wealth of knowledge throughout the day, making it a truly unique experience. Michael took us to far more places than we could have covered on our own in a single rainy day, and he was very flexible, happily letting us spend extra time exploring Kelvingrove Art Gallery when we wanted to. He made a reservation for us at a place that serves delicious, authentic Scottish food. As introverts, we were a little concerned that a private tour might feel tiring, but it was quite the opposite. Michael is warm, friendly, and easy to talk to, and even our teenagers were engaged the whole time. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide or a better tour.

A group of 6 used Hopscotch Tours for a private guided day of touring after arriving into Edinburgh from a cruise. We had a wonderful day. Our guide was knowledgable and engaging and had many fun anecdotes to share along our trip. The van was comfortable and my parents who have mobility issues were looked after during the transitions in and out to various locations. We had some dietary concerns that meant we had to change a previously booked restaurant for lunch and our guide Fraser and the company’s administrator were lovely about making the change. We had a delicious meal at The butterfly and the pig. The tour was a perfect length and we were able to enjoy many points of interest and learn a lot in just the one day.

The only tour I have taken that I have enjoyed as much is the one I took two days later with the same company and guide, Fraser. I planned this as a solo trip to celebrated a life event it was all about me. Fraser took the time to find out about me and why I was visiting Scotland and taking the Edinburgh tour. He did an amazing job tailoring the tour to me. As I was spending the week mostly in Edinburgh we decided on seeing the below. - Forth Bridges, South Queensferry - Culross (Cranesmuir in Outlander) - Fettes College - Circus Lane - Dean Village - Grassmarket (lunch at The Last Drop) - Walk up Victoria Street onto Royal Mile, then along by Greyfriars Kirk, before taking in the view of the Castle from The Vennel Steps. - Calton Hill - Leith I would change nothing about the day. Fraser was a delightful person and a very well informed guide! He is an obvious history buff which was appreciated. My husband has some mobility issues and the private tour allowed us to do our own pace and Fraser got us up close by car to all the destinations to minimize unnecessary walking so we could enjoy walking within the sites. We are a well travelled couple and Fraser is at the top of the list when it comes to private tours!
