Klaar voor een kleine groep Tokyo food tour die je dieper brengt dan wat de Shinjuku of Shibuya gebieden kunnen bieden? Ga met ons mee en laat de ingeblikte, prefab toeristenloop achter je, en neem in plaats daarvan een kijkje in hoe de lokale bevolking tot rust komt na het werk. In de loop van onze 3 - ish uren samen, bezoeken we drie verschillende staande bar restaurants (bekend als "tachinomi" in het Japans). We spreiden onze tachinomi bezoeken over twee verschillende wijken, met een treinrit van 6 minuten tussen de twee. Naast de tachinomi is een iets meer antropologische, met betrekking tot een overvloed aan culturele bezienswaardigheden en onderwerpen, van het nachtleven tot boodschappen winkelen en meer. Met eten, drie drankjes en treinkaartjes inbegrepen, hoef je deze zorgeloze nacht geen enkele glanzende yen uit te geven. Een opmerking over onze reisroute Hoewel we altijd ons best doen om ons te houden aan het plan zoals hierboven uiteengezet, begrijpen we dat tourroutes, restaurantstops (indien van toepassing) en timings kunnen variëren op basis van omstandigheden buiten onze controle.

Oimachi ligt op slechts twee minuten van de Yamanote (loop)-lijn van Shinagawa. Binnen enkele ogenblikken kronkelen we ons een weg door de drukke, smalle straatjes die deze buurt het soort karakter geven dat je gewoon niet aantreft in de grootschalige uitgaanswijken van Tokio. Het zal niet lang duren voordat we onze eerste tachinomi ("staande bar") induiken voor een koud biertje en een smakelijke lokale pub in Japanse stijl. Als bier niet jouw ding is, zijn er andere opties. Ook beschikbaar, voor het geval je een beetje op je hoede bent voor sommige van de meer 'geavanceerde' Japanse gerechten, zijn er meer klassiek westerse smaakvriendelijke opties. De honger gestild voor het moment, beginnen we aan een leerzame wandeling, waarbij we (met visuele hulpmiddelen in overvloed) de grillen van het Japanse nachtleven uitleggen. Het is een luchtige wandeling, en we hebben er lol in; je hoeft je geen zorgen te maken dat het rauw of ongekleurd is, en deze tour is ook geschikt voor tieners, mocht je ze op sleeptouw hebben. Dan eten we nog wat.
Twee restaurants en twee drankjes in, het is tijd om afscheid te nemen van Oimachi. Wees echter niet bang, want we zijn slechts zes minuten rijden naar onze volgende stop, Kamata. We hebben hier een hele nieuwe reeks bezienswaardigheden voor je, en onze gidsen gaan waar de meeste Japanse gidsen je niet mee naartoe willen nemen (waarschijnlijk zijn ze gewoon bang dat je je zult vervelen, maar we zijn ervan overtuigd dat je dat niet zult doen). Kamata heeft een geweldige architectuur uit het bubbeltijdperk (jaren '80 tot begin jaren '90) met een paar vrij recente spruce-ups en een klassieke old skool shotengai ("winkelstraat"). Het heeft ook een goede smaak, en we hebben een plek met een relaxte sfeer en vriendelijke klanten die allemaal in de rij staan. Dit is een van die bedreigde delen van Tokio, een bruisend dorp met een eigen identiteit. Terwijl andere delen bezwijken voor winkelketens en homogenisering, staat Kamata sterk, zij het misschien niet zo stijlvol.

The place is of incredible beauty; facilities from the hall through the common areas, restaurants, beaches, to the cozy rooms. It is an ideal place for families, young couples, and those of us who are not so much. Cassandra, manager in charge during our stay, has an infectious energy and is a great professional, who animates and organizes a place that we imagine is complex to manage. Her assistant Luisa assists and supports her. At night the shows are real stagings of unimaginable quality: dances, music, circus actors, games of lights that have nothing to envy to other high places. We cannot fail to name Yurbel, choreographer and dancer full of magic and contagious joy who was in charge of dances, every night. Luis Jose and Kimberly, together with Yurbel, proudly leave the Venezuelan gentile aloft, and made us feel like a dream. Yeman was our guide for this pleasant evening of colourful dining in obscure little, standing room only, restaurants with good food, interesting clientel, sweet and dry Sake and fascinating history. Ask about the “love hotels” which were news to us! Highly recommended.

Andrew was fantastic and gave us an insight into the Japanese culture. He took us to small restaurants that were yummy and plenty of traditional bars. He even showed us how to purchase a train ticket home! I highly recommend this tour!

If you get the chance, ask for Mini as your guide. She was great! Very friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable about the culture. We went to some off the beaten path spots and tried some very good food that I would have normally never tried. She even took time to help me set up a Suica card to my phone (no easy task as there were a lot of hoops to go through) and took me to a store afterwards to get flavored Kit Kats for souvenirs. Highly recommend!
