De tour begint met een bezoek aan Pietermaritzburg , de hoofdstad van KwaZulu Natal. Daar stoppen we bij het stadhuis van Pietermaritzburg, dat beweert het grootste bakstenen gebouw op het zuidelijk halfrond te zijn. Daar zullen we het Gandhi-beeld ook bezoeken voordat we richting de Drakensberg gaan. Kamberg Cave Art ligt op 90 minuten lopen en wandelen van het basiskamp. De tour begint met een bezoek aan Pietermaritzburg, de hoofdstad van KwaZulu Natal. Daar stoppen we bij het stadhuis van Pietermaritzburg, dat beweert het grootste bakstenen gebouw op het zuidelijk halfrond te zijn. Daar zullen we het Gandhi-beeld ook bezoeken voordat we richting de Drakensberg gaan.
Onze bestemming is het prachtige UNESCO-werelderfgoed, het Drakensbergen-gebergte. Het natuurreservaat Kamberg werd in 1951 opgericht vanwege zijn unieke natuurlijke schoonheid, flora en fauna en historische rotstekeningen. Het reservaat heeft meer dan 6200 hectors glooiende bergen en diepe valleien met een uitgebreid netwerk van wandelingen en paden. De Rock Art Site van Walk to the Caves is meer dan 60 minuten lang vanaf het kamp en vereist een gemiddelde conditie om te voltooien. Het natuurlijke landschap heeft veel schuilplaatsen in de rotsen, met San rotsschilderingen. Deze werden gecreëerd door het San-volk gedurende een periode van minstens 4000 jaar. De rotsschilderingen zijn van uitstekende kwaliteit en diversiteit en vertegenwoordigen het spirituele leven van de San mensen die niet meer in de regio wonen.
Het volgende is het Nelson Mandela Capture Site-beeld en het Apartheidsmuseum. De Capture Site beschikt over een groot beeld van Nelson Mandela dat bestaat uit kolommen met meerdere kolommen die tussen de 6 en 9 meter hoog zijn. Toeristen op de Capture Site moeten zich op 35 meter afstand van de grote buste van Nelson Mandela bevinden om zich duidelijker te kunnen concentreren. Het indrukwekkende beeldhouwwerk aan de westkant creëert een uniek, prachtig landschap voor de lokale Howick-gemeenschap. Het museum is gewijd aan het leven van Nelson Mandela en zijn strijd tegen de Apartheidsregering.
De volgende stop is het stadje Howick om de waterval te bezoeken. KwaNogqaza of Howick Falls is ongeveer 95 m hoog en ligt aan de Umgeni-rivier. De lokale Zulu-bevolking noemde het de 'Home of the Tall', verwijzend naar zijn hoogte. Naast de waterval ligt een schilderachtig oud gedeelte van Howick met een selectie van historische musea en antiekwinkels om te bezoeken.

We doen de afhaling op een straal van 5 km van het Gooderson Tropicana Hotel, het 1st Zulu Safaris-kantoor, en we halen ook op bij de terminal voor passagiers in de haven van Durban. Als je buiten dat bereik bent kunnen er speciale arrangementen worden gemaakt om opgehaald te worden bij je accommodatie, je moet contact opnemen met +27 82 7766 771 om je afhaling te bevestigen 48 uur voor je tour

The guide Bule was great, super helpful and gave me many explanations. I am very happy with my experience and I would much recommend!
It was day full of adventures! From hiking up a mountain to refreshing sound of the waterfall. Bring lunch with you as you enjoy eating while on a scenic drive. Bule and Promise ( tour guides ) were amazing.
I did this tour with my best friend in March 2026 and enjoyed every bit. We especially love that they work with local people who know the area. Our driver, Buleh, was funny, considerate, and safe. He took great care of us and the long drive went by quickly because of the good conversation (and amapiano ;)). He has a natural sense for people and what they might need. It was also a treasure having Promise from the Kamberg Rock Art Centre show us around on the hike up to the San paintings. It's really nice to see 1st Zulu Safaris working with them, especially as I understand not many tour operators use the Kamberg guides when they do tours in the region. Overall, it was a long, tiring day, but worth it!
The day was full of experiences. Architecture, nature, hiking, waterfall, museum, history and ancient art - very varied program. You will be pleasantly tired by the end of the day and say 'It was worth doing it'. Not a lazy day:-). You go back 4 000 years in time... The cave paintings were the highlights of the day. Sotiris, our guide was helpful, informative and provided a pleasant day for us. We have good memories. Recommended.
Great, interesting. It's a pretty demanding one and a half hour climb up to the rock paintings, but you can go at your own pace. The area was pretty brown because it was almost winter, but that valley is very beautiful with green grass and flowers in the summertime.

A day tour with Fortune, who is very nice. Prepare for a long drive around 3.5hr to the mountain, but worthwhile. It is better to have the game pass with guide, so that you can go to the top and get some instructions on plants and culture. The museum at Mandela Capture site is beyond expectation, with clear history of ANC and Mandela, etc.

This tour is an amazing experience from start to finish! Our guide, Thami, is polite, warm, and enthusiastic. He arrives early for pick-up and provides detailed explanations at every stop. What stands out the most is his respectful and patient approach—he doesn’t ask personal questions and makes sure everyone feels comfortable throughout the journey without hesitation in providing assistance. The itinerary is well-planned, with a smooth flow between sites and well-timed stops. Even on weekends, there are no issues with site closures, making the trip hassle-free. This tour is highly recommended for history and nature lovers, offering a perfect blend of cultural significance and breathtaking landscapes. However, be prepared for nearly three hours of hiking in total.

Mandela capture site is well worth a visit. The drakensburg park is beautiful but the treck is not for the less able or older people
