[JSA verhaal] De Joint Security Area (JSA) is de meest iconische site binnen de DMZ, waar Noord- en Zuid-Korea elkaar ontmoeten. Imjingak Peace Park is de symbolische toegangspoort tot de DMZ en een plek die diepgaand inzicht biedt in de Koreaanse Oorlog. Hier zie je belangrijke historische bezienswaardigheden zoals de Freedom Bridge – ooit gebruikt door ongeveer 13.000 vluchtelingen op zoek naar vrijheid – en Mangbaedan, waar Noord Koreaanse overlopers hulde brengen aan hun geboortestad. Je bekijkt ook de stoomlocomotief Jangdan Station, die tijdens de oorlog werd gebruikt om militaire voorraden te vervoeren. Na deze site bezoekt u ook het dichtstbijzijnde toegankelijke punt van het JSA: het Panmunjom Visitor Center, waar u een gedetailleerde uitleg ter plaatse krijgt.

Mangbaedan is een gedenkaltaar gebouwd voor mensen die tijdens de Koreaanse Oorlog van hun familie werden gescheiden. Omdat ze niet konden terugkeren naar hun geboortestad in Noord-Korea, gebruikten ze deze site om te buigen naar hun voorouderlijke huizen. Het wordt nog steeds bezocht, vooral tijdens traditionele feestdagen, door degenen die hun familie willen eren.
De Derde Tunnel is een van de bekendste sites in de DMZ. Het strekt zich uit over 1.635 meter lang, 2 meter breed en 2 meter hoog en werd in het geheim gebouwd door Noord-Korea als invasieroute naar Zuid-Korea. De tunnel is groot genoeg voor een hele militaire divisie om in één keer door te gaan en was ontworpen om troepen, wapens en munitie te vervoeren. Opmerkelijk is dat het werd opgegraven met alleen basisgereedschap en dynamiet en werd ontdekt in de jaren 1970 na informatie van een Noord Koreaanse overloper.
Dorasan Observatory biedt een zeldzame kans om Noord-Korea van een afstand te observeren. Vanaf dit observatorium op de bergtop kun je delen van Noord-Korea bekijken, waaronder het Kaesong Industrial Complex, een propagandadorp bij de enorme Koreaans vlaggenmast en gebouwen in de Joint Security Area op heldere dagen.
Unification Village is de eindhalte van de DMZ tour. Het dorp werd gesticht in de jaren 1970 met overheidssteun en werd oorspronkelijk gecreëerd als onderdeel van internationale propaganda-inspanningen. De structuur is geïnspireerd op het Israëlische kibboetssysteem. Tegenwoordig wonen hier ongeveer 400 inwoners, waarvan de meesten in de landbouw werken.
Freedom Bridge is een historische brug in Imjingak, gebouwd na de Koreaanse Oorlog. Het werd gebruikt door krijgsgevangenen die terugkeerden naar Zuid-Korea tijdens de wapenstilstandsperiode. De naam “Freedom Bridge” weerspiegelt hun terugkeer uit gevangenschap. Tegenwoordig staat de brug nog steeds symbool voor de verdeling van Korea en de gebeurtenissen die volgden op de oorlog.

- Minimaal 4 deelnemers zijn vereist om deze tour te laten werken. Als het minimum aantal deelnemers niet wordt gehaald, wordt de gasten een alternatieve datum, een privé-upgradeoptie of een volledige terugbetaling aangeboden.

Great experience with Bill Hwang. There was good coordination before the tour and Bill gave clear instructions. He’s a responsible guide who accompanied each step of the way and gave life to the tour. Much better experience with a small group compared to larger ones which are impersonal.

We had a great time on our DMZ tour, and Bill was a big reason why. He was super knowledgeable and shared tons of interesting facts and stories throughout the day that made the experience much more engaging. You could tell he really knows his stuff and enjoys what he does. One thing we especially appreciated was how many photos he took for our group. It was nice being able to enjoy the tour without constantly worrying about getting pictures ourselves, and he made sure everyone got some great shots. Bill made the whole process easy, organized, and fun from start to finish. He kept the group moving smoothly, answered all of our questions, and brought a great energy to the day. This was an excellent DMZ tour and one of the highlights of my trip to Korea. The small-group format made a huge difference compared to larger bus tours. With fewer people, there was plenty of opportunity to ask questions, interact with the guide, and really engage with the history and significance of the DMZ. Our guide, Bill Hwang, was outstanding. He was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about the subject matter. He did a great job explaining the history of the Korean Peninsula and providing context at each stop. I especially enjoyed the unique focus on the two contrasting JSA crossing stories, which added a personal and thought-provoking perspective that I haven’t seen offered on other DMZ tours. The itinerary was well organized, and highlights such as the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, Dora Observatory, Imjingak Peace Park, and Unification Village were fascinating. Bill kept the tour informative while also making it enjoyable and easy to follow. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Korea, especially if you’re looking for a more personal experience and a guide who truly brings the history to life.

We originally booked a group tour, however due to smaller numbers we were offered the opportunity to upgrade to a private tour — and what an incredible decision that turned out to be! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Highly Recommended! We had an absolutely wonderful experience with our tour guide, Bill Hwang, and our driver, Mr Kim. Originally, this was not meant to be a private tour, but due to low numbers, the company changed it to a private tour. While it cost a little more, it was absolutely worth every cent and ended up being one of the highlights of our trip to Korea. Bill was knowledgeable, engaging, and full of great dad jokes that kept us laughing throughout the day. He shared fascinating information about Korea’s history, culture, and attractions, and he was always happy to answer questions. He also provided excellent recommendations for places to visit during the rest of our stay. Because it became a private tour, we were able to enjoy a much more personal experience, and Bill was incredibly accommodating with our schedule and interests. We never felt rushed and were able to make the most of our day. A special thank you to Mr Kim, who was an excellent driver—professional, friendly, and always ensuring we travelled comfortably and safely. Both Bill and Mr Kim went above and beyond, even helping us take plenty of photos so we could capture beautiful memories of our trip. We were notified the day before where our meeting place & time would be from Team Bill! Team Bill was very prompt with returning our texts! Our meeting time was moved up 20 minutes earlier than scheduled. This helped to facilitate our group getting an earlier tour at the DMZ due to May attendances & it being a first come basis. Tour well worth your time & money spent & highly recommend. Be advised there's a considerable amout of walking involved with this tour. Our opinion was that Team Bill took a lot of pride in his work, knowledgeable & very willing to answer our questions. Team Bill took various pictures of all of us throughout the day & sent them to us on the What's App! Team Bill reached out to us at the end of our tour & offered for us to text him on the What's App if we needed any advise during our stay in Seoul. If you're looking for a tour with a considerable amount of free time this tour is not for you as it's very structured & time oriented. Great job Team Bill!
