Leer meer over de rijke geschiedenis van Split, een van de oudste Kroatische steden, maak kennis met de traditie van de stad en ervaar Split's "Šušur". Maak een wandeling door de beroemdste Riva in Kroatië, waar alle grote stadsevenementen plaatsvinden. Bezoek alle belangrijke stadspleinen zoals de Fruitmarkt, het nationale plein bekend als "Piazza" en het centrale plein van het paleis van Diocletianus - Peristil. Het paleis van Diocletianus is een oud paleis gebouwd door de Romeinse keizer Diocletianus aan het begin van de vierde eeuw na Christus, dat vandaag ongeveer de helft van de oude stad en het stadscentrum van Split, in Kroatië, vormt. Hoewel het wordt aangeduid als een "paleis" vanwege het beoogde gebruik als de pensioenresidentie van Diocletianus, kan de term misleidend zijn omdat de structuur enorm is en meer lijkt op een groot fort: ongeveer de helft was voor persoonlijk gebruik van Diocletianus, en de rest huisvestte het militaire garnizoen. Verdwaal in de doolhofachtige straten van het 17-eeuwse oude paleis van Diocletianus (het stadscentrum en UNESCO-werelderfgoed). Van de 40-eeuwse Egyptische sfinx tot het 20-eeuwse gebouw, het stadscentrum van Split zal je overweldigen. Ervaar en geniet van de mediterrane levensstijl van de lokale bevolking.
Peristyle, als het centrale plein van het paleis, bedoeld voor de keizer Diocletianus gevierd als de levende zoon van Jupiter, vindt zijn plaats tussen vele tempels. Vanwege zijn unieke schoonheid en ongebruikelijke akoestiek werd Peistyle het ideale theaterlandschap, perfect voor operaklassiekers en werken uit de oude literatuur, maar ook het podium waar het overvloedige stadsleven zich voortzet.
Vanaf de buitenkant rechthoekig, en vanaf de binnenkant cirkelvormige plattegrond van dit oude keizerlijke hof, laat Vestibule tot op de dag van vandaag een monumentale indruk achter.
De Diocletian Palace-onderconstructies vertegenwoordigen een van de best bewaarde oude complexen in hun soort ter wereld en zijn daarom in veel opzichten verantwoordelijk voor de reden waarom de historische kern van Split in 1979 op de UNESCO-werelderfgoedlijst stond.
Porta septemtrionalis is hun Romeinse naam. Keizer Diocletianus liep erdoorheen toen hij het paleis binnenging op 1 juni 305. Ze werden gebouwd in de vorm van een rechthoek, met dubbele deuren, als onderdeel van de defensieve militaire tactiek (propugnaculum).

Our guide, Slavko, was incredible for several reasons. First, it was super hot, so the Get Your Guide team moved the tour to later in the evening because of heat. Our phones were on airplane mode, so we missed the email completely. We got a little panicked when there were no others waiting for the tour and no "green umbrella"! But, Slavko showed up as we had not re-booked to make sure we had a tour. He did the tour despite the heat and having to redo the tour later! (We couldn't have done the later one anyway as we were on a cruise ship.) Next, Slavko was incredibly well informed, knowledgeable and passionate. As a native, he had some incredible insights and was super engaging. He pointed out all of the notable historic elements-Roman street construction, building materials and different structures, but he also some fun "Game of Thrones" trivia. He even had a shot on his phone of the scene from the movie (see photos). It was neat having our own really private tour and I commend Salvko for being so accommodating and conscientious. Totally recommend him as your guide! *Note, make sure someone in the group has an e-sim card or international plan so that you get important information!

This was a really interesting tour of the palace - we had a great guide who shared a lot of information about the place and local color as well. However, the tour we purchased was advertised to be 2 hours and it was about 80 minutes. It is also advertised to be a "small group" tour, but we had about 20 people. Not small at all. This didn't detract from the tour but you should know what you are getting for your money. If you want a small group that is more personal this is not it.

Very good small group guide (20 people) who explained and taught well. Would recommend. There was a small issue with meeting the group but overall a good experience!

A short tour allowed me having a sound understanding of the whole old town of Split. On top of a that, the tour guide also touched on details about locals. Highly recommend this tour.
Interesting and large palace area from the 2nd century. Well-preserved Roman building. Small alleys and small shops within the area.
We enjoyed touring with a local and early mourning in August was the best way to go. Very knowledgeable guide with a quirky sense of humor. We learned more than expected. Much recommended !
