Thermopylae is een plaats in Griekenland waar in de oudheid een smalle kustdoorgang bestond. Het ontleent zijn naam aan de hete zwavelbronnen. In de Griekse mythologie is de Hete Poort een van de toegangen tot Hades. Thermopylae is de plaats van een strijd tussen de Griekse strijdkrachten en de binnenvallende Perzische strijdkrachten, herdacht door Simonides van Ceos in het beroemde grafschrift: "Ga de Spartanen vertellen, vreemdelingen die voorbij komen, dat we hier liggen, gehoorzaam aan hun wetten." Thermopylae is de enige landroute die groot genoeg is om significant verkeer tussen Lokris en Thessalië te dragen. Om van noord naar zuid langs de oostkust van het Balkan-schiereiland te gaan, moet je de pas gebruiken, en daarom is Thermopylae het toneel geweest van verschillende veldslagen.
De slag bij Thermopylae werd uitgevochten tussen een alliantie van oude Griekse stadstaten, geleid door koning Leonidas I van Sparta, en het Achaemenidische rijk van Xerxes I. Het werd gevochten in 480 voor Christus in de loop van drie dagen, tijdens de tweede Perzische invasie van Griekenland. De slag vond gelijktijdig plaats met de zeeslag bij Artemisium. Het vond plaats bij de smalle kustpas van Thermopylae ("The Hot Gates") in augustus of september 480 voor Christus. De Perzische invasie was een vertraagde reactie op de nederlaag van de eerste Perzische invasie van Griekenland, die was beëindigd door de Atheense overwinning in de Slag bij Marathon in 490 voor Christus. Tegen 480 voor Christus had Xerxes een enorm leger en een enorme marine verzameld en was hij op weg om heel Griekenland te veroveren. De Atheense politicus en generaal Themistocles had voorgesteld dat de geallieerde Grieken de opmars van het Perzische leger bij de pas van Thermopylae blokkeren, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd de Perzische marine bij de Straat van Artemisium blokkeren.
Leonidas was een koning van de Griekse stadstaat Sparta, en de 17e van de Agiad-linie, een dynastie die afstamde van de mythologische halfgod Heracles en Cadmus. Leonidas was de zoon van koning Anaxandridas II. Hij volgde zijn halfbroer koning Cleomenes I op de troon in c. 489 voor Christus. Leonidas had een opmerkelijke deelname aan de Tweede Perzische Oorlog, waar hij de geallieerde Griekse troepen naar een laatste gevecht leidde in de Slag bij Thermopylae (480 voor Christus) terwijl hij probeerde de pas te verdedigen tegen het binnenvallende Perzische leger; hij stierf tijdens de slag en ging de mythe binnen als de leider van de 300 Spartanen. Terwijl de Grieken deze strijd verloren, waren ze in staat om de Perzische indringers in het volgende jaar te verdrijven.
Naast het monument van Leonidas, in het historische Thermopylae, ligt het innovatieve museum van de gemeente Lamia, gewijd aan de slag van 480 voor Christus die de loop van de Griekse geschiedenis veranderde.

Een intrigerend architectonisch wonder genesteld in de archeologische vindplaats Delphi. Tholos biedt ons een kijkje in de antieke wereld en het rijke tapijt van overtuigingen en tradities. De Tholos van Athena Pronaia is een rond gebouw met een opvallend architectonisch ontwerp, met een ring van Dorische zuilen rond een centrale kamer. Dit unieke bouwwerk, gebouwd in de 4e eeuw voor Christus, diende als een heiligdom gewijd aan Athena Pronaia, een variant van de godin Athena die in Delphi werd aanbeden.
Delphi Archeologisch Museum is een van de belangrijkste musea van Griekenland en een van de meest bezochte. Het wordt beheerd door het Griekse Ministerie van Cultuur. Opgericht in 1903, is het verschillende keren herschikt en herbergt het de ontdekkingen die zijn gedaan in het Pan-Helleense heiligdom van Delphi, dat dateert uit de Late Helladische (Myceense) periode tot het vroege Byzantijnse tijdperk. Georganiseerd in veertien kamers op twee niveaus, toont het museum voornamelijk standbeelden, waaronder de beroemde wagenmenner van Delphi, architecturale elementen, zoals het fries van de Siphnian Treasury, en ex-voto's gewijd aan het heiligdom van Pythische Apollo, zoals de Sfinx van Naxos. Het beursvloeroppervlak is ruim 2270m2, terwijl de opslag- en conserveringsruimten (mozaïeken, keramiek en metalen) 558m2 beslaan.
De tempel van Apollo, god van muziek, harmonie, licht, genezing en orakels nam de belangrijkste en meest prominente positie in in het Delphic Panhellenic Sanctuary. Het gebouw met de gedeeltelijk gerestaureerde zuilengalerij die vandaag zichtbaar is, dateert uit de 4e eeuw voor Christus; het is de derde tempel die op dezelfde plaats is gebouwd. Het beroemde orakel, de Pythia, opereerde in de tempel, de locatie die volgens een traditie werd gekozen vanwege een heilige kloof onder de plaats die dampen uitstraalde, die door de Pythia werden ingeademd. Sommige oude schrijvers stellen dat de Pythia toen in een staat van delirium kwamen en onverstaanbare kreten uitten, die vervolgens door de priesters werden omgezet in dubbelzinnige orakels. Deze interpretatie is controversieel en is aangevochten door geleerden zoals Joseph Fontenrose en Lisa Maurizio, die beweren dat de oude bronnen de Pythia uniform vertegenwoordigen die verstaanbaar spreekt en profetieën geeft in haar eigen stem.

We used MyAthensTransfers for this tour and for airport pick up and drop off for our group. Each time, our driver was on time and professional. The day tour was informative. Delphi was awesome. The spot we went for lunch was beautiful and great. I will say that Thermopylae was really underwhelming. It consists of two statues. This has nothing to do with the tour, but just a spot that was kinda lost to history.

Our driver was excellent, it was a lot of driving in one day and really great to have someone to drive us in a spacious, clean and comfortable vehicle. For 4 of us, the price was only a little more than going on a coach tour, so this felt very good value for money and our driver arranged a table in a wonderful restaurant with epic views for us. It was a highlight of our holiday and the best food we ate in Greece! We did two private tours and two airport transfers with this company and the service & drivers were exceptional. Wow! What a great day! We have been on a lot of tours but this one was truly memorable. We wanted to see Thermopylae and Delphi while on this trip. But what made the trip was our guide, Notis. This tour requires a long car trip together there. The time passed quickly and enjoyably with us just chatting with Notis. Learning about Greek culture, history and other topics. It was like visiting with friends over coffee. Thermopylae has changed over the years but the museum had a great 3-D 12 minute film that answered most questions. The memorial was touching as the story of bravery and loyalty is a great one. Delphi was different. The museum there has the result of many years of excavation, making the site very real. The actual site requires a lot of uphill walking but many spots were awesome. Real History. To recap, Notis is my new Greek friend. I need to ask where else ha can take us. We will gladly go with him again.

Such a great day trip. It is a long day from Athens but worth the drive if interested in the history of the battle and Delphi. Temple of Apollo was the draw. The museum was basically empty and the 3D show was neat. Our driver was amazing and got us there fast and made the trip better. It was hot so be prepared with plenty of water and wear decent shoes up the trek to see the temple, theater and stadium. The Delphi Museum was wonderful and packed with such interesting points but as we were so overheated and tired from the archeological site, we did not take the time the museum deserved. It would have been helpful and more interesting to have a guide inside the archeological site as we did not so just read the various signs.

We had an amazing trip! Everything was really nice. We have visited Thermopylae and Delphi Museum and Arheological Site. On our way back we stop for a lunch which was amazing. Dimitris Tabone was realy helpful and kind. He was asking always if we are ok, if we need a break, he explain to us some things about Delphi. We strongly recommend this trip and this driver.

We had an amazing time on this tour. Mike (Menelaus) was the best driver/guide. Mike reached out the night before to introduce himself and confirm pick-up time. The day of the tour, we wanted to skip one stop on the itinerary and instead stop at a shop on the way to purchase honey - Mike was very accommodating. He was a wealth of information, easy to chat with, and provided us with many recommendations for restaurants in Athens. He even thought our daughter might like to attend an outdoor movie near where we were staying, and looking up the information for us. If you've ever been to Athens, you know driving can be wild. This tour gave us the opportunity to see sites away from the city, without the stress of trying to get there on our own. Panos our driver was was engaging and informative. He told us so much history, and pointed out notable sites along the way. We left early in the morning and arrived at Thermopylae before any other tourists, which was a pleasant surprise. Delphi is a must see. It could be challenging for some, but having the flexibility with the schedule kept the worry of "missing a bus" or not going fast enough, at bay. Our driver recommended an outstanding local taverna for lunch. Arachova was a delightful surprise. The vibe of the town is very unique, and it is incredibly picturesque. We recommend this tour 100%.
