Begin aan een dagtocht van Iasi naar Bucovina's UNESCO Painted Monasteries. Het Voronet-klooster werd in 1488 in recordtijd gebouwd: drie maanden, drie weken en drie dagen en maakt vandaag deel uit van het UNESCO-erfgoed. De buitenmuurschilderingen hebben hun tinten behouden ondanks eeuwen van slecht weer, maar de ingrediënten die werden gebruikt bij het voorbereiden van de verf zijn nog steeds een raadsel. De scènes in de muurschilderingen tonen, net als een film, de geschiedenis van het christendom, gepresenteerd op een originele manier, sterk beïnvloed door volksgeloof, door de oosterse cultuur, maar ook door de orthodoxe gedachte.
Het Moldovita-klooster, opgenomen in het UNESCO-erfgoed in 1993, werd gebouwd tussen 1532 en 1537. Gedurende honderden jaren waren de muurschilderingen de enige manier waarop ongeschoolde plattelandsbewoners kennis konden nemen van de leringen van de Bijbel. De fresco's zijn een immense kleurenillustratie van Bijbelse scènes, aangepast aan de geschiedenis van de plaats en aan de belangrijke momenten in het leven van de gemeenschap.
Het klooster Sucevita is de nieuwste geschilderde kloosters van Boekovina en werd in 1993 opgenomen in het UNESCO-werelderfgoed. Het werd gebouwd in Moldavische stijl met gotische en Byzantijnse invloeden. De muurschilderingen worden gedomineerd door een schaduw van groen, verkregen door een eeuwenoude techniek van natuurlijke pigmenten.

We had an absolutely amazing experience on the day trip from Iași to the Painted Monasteries in Bucovina, and a huge part of that was thanks to our guide, Leo. From the very beginning, Leo was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. He shared fascinating historical and cultural insights at every stop, making each monastery come alive in a way that you simply wouldn’t get on your own. His passion for the region was truly contagious. The trip was perfectly organized, relaxed, and enjoyable throughout. One of the main reasons we went to Iasi, was to do the Rolandia tour company's Moldova tour, but since we were in this area, we signed up for this tour as well. Leo (Leonard) was our guide, and again he was fantastic. This trip was a lot of driving, but it was really interesting seeing the Romanian countryside and small villages as we whizzed by. Seeing the Stork nests on the street posts throughout the drive was also a pleasant surprise. The three monasteries that we visited were well worth the trip. My favorite was the first stop, but they were all interesting. Leo told us a lot about each of them and made sure we understood as much as possible about each of the monasteries and their artwork. We also stopped at a high point with a neat wooden swing overlooking the countryside, and for lunch in a nice restaurant. We did this trip the day after the Moldova trip- again, two long days, but a very perfect way to see this part of the world.

The experience in the monasteries was unforgettable. The guide was excellent. He described in detail the meaning and value of the frescoes painted outside and inside the monasteries. I recommend this tour with a closed eye.
