Het is een van de oude en historische klooster in Ethiopië, dat ligt op het noordwesten van Addis Abeba. Het klooster werd in de 13e eeuw gesticht door de heilige Tekle Haymanot, volgens de overlevering; hij mediteerde 29 jaar in een grot. Het kloostercomplex ligt op een terras tussen een klif en de kloof van een van de zijrivieren van de Abbay-rivier. Geen van de oorspronkelijke gebouwen van Debre Libanos heeft het overleefd, hoewel David Buxton vermoedde dat "er nog interessante dingen te vinden zijn tussen de naburige kliffen." Tot de huidige gebouwen behoren de kerk boven het graf van Tekle Haymanot, die keizer Haile Selassie in 1961 liet bouwen; een iets oudere Church of the Cross, waar Buxton werd verteld dat een fragment van het True Cross bewaard is gebleven; en vijf religieuze scholen.

Jemma Valley en het omliggende gebied staan bekend om de vogelspottochten. Het belangrijkste doel voor vogelaars is de endemische en bereik beperkte Harwood's Francolin en andere mogelijk te herkennen zijn; Banded Barbet, de Black-headed Forest Oriole, de White-billed Starling, de Red-billed Starling, de White-winged Cliff Chat, de White-backed Black Tit, de White-cheeked Turaco en Hemprich's Hornbill. Je zult ook een van de endemische zoogdieren van Ethiopië zien, de Gelada of bloedende baviaan. This tour was the highlight of our trip! We felt extremely safe and comfortable. We started off at the monastery, then we saw the baboons. Then we saw the Portuguese bridge and waterfalls and had a delicious lunch with a beautiful view. It was a nice, relaxing way to get out of the city. Our guide Barch was great, he went above and beyond to give us a perfect day.
It was really cool to see the countryside and what things are like outside the city. Our guide Niko was excellent. He explained things to us as we drove to the destinations, and shared about Ethiopia. He even brought us to some places to shop for coffee after we got back to Addis. He took us to local places to eat and try the local beer/liquor which was really cool because we never would have done that ourselves. The church had so much history and was beautiful. A priest showed us around and took us through the museum. The Portuguese bridge was stunning. The waterfall and the views from the top were beautiful. I would definitely recommend!

Very fun experience! Outside of the initial cost, there was no admission fee to be had. It turned out to be an all day trip, which the listing said upfront. Our guide, Barch, and all the other guides were very friendly and hospitable. The monastery had a decent crowd since our tour was right before their Mass started, though inside did not have anyone else aside from the Monk guiding us. The weather was perfect for the rest of the trip as well; bright and sunny, perfect for our hike to see the baboons and the Portuguese Bridge. If you're interested in history and love hiking, it's a perfect tour for you!

I highly recommend this tour company for anyone planning to visit Ethiopia. The overall organization was highly professional, and my itinerary went perfectly smoothly. A special shoutout to my guide, Yihun, and my driver, Niko. They were an absolutely fantastic team and took excellent care of me from start to finish! Yihun is incredibly knowledgeable; he explained the deep and complex history of Ethiopia in a way that was both easy to understand and engaging. Niko is an excellent and careful driver, navigating the roads expertly while ensuring I was comfortable at all times. Had a great time! Amazing views and our guide Abe was great and very knowledgeable! The lunch was also delicious and had an amazing view. The only think I would have liked was to stop at Entoto to see the view on the way back.
Abi and Abe were wonderful guides to the monastery and the Portuguese bridge. They were friendly and welcoming, the ride was comfortable and they answered all our questions. The tour even includes added local guides who were knowledgeable and helpful. The lunch is at a lovely spot with an amazing view of the canyon. Just a note that it is a long drive - no fault to the guides - but if you’re not used to being in a car for long periods of time, this is a heads-up!
