Donderdag. 19 februari 1942. De Tweede Wereldoorlog bereikt het vasteland van Australië en de noordelijke stad Darwin wordt gebombardeerd. Sluit je aan bij je deskundige lokale gids die je meeneemt naar dat WO II-tijdperk tijdens een wandeling van 2 uur door de historische wijk van de stad.

Door het centrale district van Darwin zijn er veel verborgen verwijzingen naar de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Ontdek ze terwijl je door deze gemakkelijk beloopbare straten dwaalt met je lokale gids.
Dit majestueuze gebouw maakt al meer dan 100 jaar deel uit van de sociale geschiedenis van Darwin en was tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog een entertainmentcentrum voor zowel Australisch als Amerikaans servicepersoneel.
Een gebouw van voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog in het hart van de gemeenschap van Darwin, dat tijdens de voorbereiding en verdediging van Australië onderdeel werd van de marinebasis HMAS Melville.
Deze prachtig gerestaureerde gebouwen geven een beeld van het leven uit de beginjaren van Darwin. Tegenwoordig worden ze gebruikt als kantoren voor de beheerder van de Northern Territory, net zoals ze het marinecommando waren tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
Dit grootse gebouw staat ter nagedachtenis aan het burgerpersoneel van het postkantoor dat op deze plek om het leven kwam tijdens het bombardement op Darwin in 1942. Stap binnen om te zien waar een bom is gevallen en ontdek de herbouwde muur van het postkantoor met de littekens van granaatscherven. OPMERKING: gasten gaan door de veiligheidscontrole om dit gebouw te betreden.
De Cenotaaf is een belangrijk monument voor Northern Territorianen die tijdens de oorlog hebben gediend. Het kijkt uit over de haven waar velen omkwamen tijdens de eerste luchtaanval op 19 februari 1942. De locatie was de thuisbasis van de 14e Luchtafweerbatterij die de eerste schoten afvuurde ter verdediging van Australië op Australische bodem.

We loved our walking tour. John was extremely knowledgeable and engaging. It was nice learning new things about Darwin, whilst learning of it's huge history - that realistically shaped Australia, without a lot of Australians ever knowing! I am a big fan of walking tours - there is something about the pace of a walking tour which allows you to hear and absorb the information given by your guide. John was a wonderful and informative guide - he knew his stuff and presented it well. I also had the good fortune to be on a tour with a group of older women who asked perceptive interesting questions which John was able to answer. I certainly now know more about the events in Darwin during WWII.

Met the guide at 8.30am, at Raintree Park, in the shade, very personable, good information and presented very well and also humour at times where appropriate. The tour was about 3km of gentle walking, plenty of stops, pointing out significant landmarks, specifically related to WW11, bombing of Darwin. Excellent 👏
