Reis naar het noorden tijdens een dagtrip vanuit Porto naar twee van de historische steden van Noord-Portugal, die momenteel in de Europese Spotlight staan. Bezoek eerst de stad Braga, meer dan 2000 jaar geleden gesticht door de Romeinen. Braga, de oudste christelijke stad van Portugal, wordt vandaag gevierd als de Europese hoofdstad van de jeugd van 2012. Ontdek eerst de oorsprong van het land in de stad Guimarães, die op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat. Bezoek het kasteel van Guimarães, een gebouw vol geschiedenis en de "geboorteplaats van Portugal". De stad is de thuisbasis van een 10e-eeuws kasteel en het paleis van de hertogen van Braganza en is vandaag de dag vol trots omdat het is uitgeroepen tot Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa voor 2012. Onze eerste stop is Braga, de hoofdstad van Minho, en dan zullen we de historische stad Guimarães ontdekken. Bereid je camera's voor en ga met ons mee om twee van de belangrijkste steden in de geschiedenis van Portugal te verkennen! Braga is een stad in het uiterste noorden van Portugal, ten noordoosten van Porto. Het staat bekend om erfgoed en religieuze evenementen. In het oosten heeft het Bom Jesus do Monte-complex een neoklassieke kerk op een uitgebreide trap van 17 verdiepingen. In het centrum van de stad herbergt de middeleeuwse stijl Sé de Braga een museum voor heilige kunst en de gotische kapel van de koningen. In de buurt kijkt het imposante aartsbisschoppelijk paleis uit op de Santa Barbara-tuin.
Een van de grootste hoogtepunten van deze tour. Beroemd om zijn eindeloze trappen en barokke details, zal deze plek zeker indruk op je maken! Niet alleen een religieus monument, het is ook een echt romantische en ontspannende plek met een prachtig uitzicht op Braga. Hier is de natuur bevoorrecht en met de grootste zorg beschermd.
De prachtige kathedraal van Braga (ook bekend als de kathedraal van Braga), een monument dat drie verschillende stijlen combineert: Romaans, Manueline en Barok. Het is de oudste kathedraal in Portugal - het werd zelfs enkele decennia gebouwd voordat het land werd gesticht! Deze imposante kathedraal is ongetwijfeld het grootste monument van Braga.
Na de lunch in Braga vertrekken we naar Guimarães, de geboorteplaats van Portugal en werelderfgoed, sinds 2001. Guimarães is een echt voorbeeld van de evolutie van een middeleeuwse stad door de geschiedenis heen! Dit was de stad waar de eerste koning van Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, werd geboren. De geschiedenis van Guimarães is gerelateerd aan het fundament van de nationale identiteit en de Portugese taal.
Nationaal symbool van de tiende eeuw. Van buitenaf is de middeleeuwse structuur indrukwekkend; Binnen heb je een prachtig uitzicht over de stad. Daarna blijven we langs het paleis van de hertogen van Bragança en bezoeken we de kerk van São Miguel.
Bekijk het imposante standbeeld van D. Afonso Henriques en loop door het Martins Sarmento-plein. Om deze korte wandeltocht te beëindigen, ontdekt u Santa Maria Street, het stadhuis, het Santiago-plein en de kerk Senhora da Oliveira.

Our guide was Felipe and he was amazing — very kind, knowledgeable, and polite. He had a wonderful sense of humor and made us laugh throughout the tour. Raquel was a wonderfully engaging guide and driver for this amazing tour. Her knowledge of the local area was exceptional, and we had a brilliant day. Our first stop, Bom Jesus was stunning with ample time to descend the steps and make the climb back to the site, as well as visit the magnificent church and surrounding parkland. Braga is an amazing city, vibrant and the perfect mix of history and shops/eateries. If you get a chance, do visit CorriQueijo for cheese tasting! Guimarães, the final stop, is filled with history and charm. I would highly recommend this visit and if you are lucky enough to have Raquel as your guide- you will have an exceptional day!

My wife and I were joined by two French speakers and to our surprise, our Portuguese driver & tour guide was able to effortlessly speak to us in both languages! I did not catch her name, but our tour was on time, driving and narration were great and she gave us enough free time to explore things on our own in both locations. Top notch.

We were taken through the Duoro Valley winery tour by Maria Marabuio today. She has a wealth of knowledge about the vineyards. A true local of the area and a wonderful person to be around for the 10 hour tour. Great places to visit, great food and great wine tasting locations. Cannot recommend Maria enough.

Overall and excellent trip to Braga and Guimaraes to see all the highlights and have enough time to explore each city. Both cities were beautiful and a must see. Our guide José was very knowledgeable and looked after us, but my hearing was not great and could not follow the explanations when there was background noises. Main area for improvement is the confusing information- the ticket said the operator was Citirama/Greyline but it was actually operated by Living Tours. The meeting location also changed but because the company name did not match it was confusing.
