Het nationale park van het Nakurumeer bevindt zich in de Grote Slenk, 1750 meter boven zeeniveau. Het Nakurumeer staat bekend als een ornithologisch paradijs door vogelaars, omdat het meer wereldberoemd is als de locatie van het grootste vogelspektakel op aarde, met tussen de één en twee miljoen grote en kleine roze flamingo's die zich voeden aan de overvloedige algen die floreren in de oevers van het warme water. Het is een van de weinige parken dat speciaal is opgericht voor de bescherming van vogels, en dan met name flamingo's. Er zijn hier meer dan 450 soorten vogels. U rijdt over de grond van de Grote Slenk vanuit Nairobi, terwijl u onderweg stopt voor curiosa en om het adembenemende uitzicht van de steile helling te bewonderen langs de weg. U komt op tijd aan bij het nationale park van het Nakurumeer voor een wildsafari halverwege de ochtend. We genieten van een eenvoudige picknicklunch. Als u het park verlaat, is er nog een wildsafari, waarna u weer op weg gaat naar Nairobi.

Wat je kunt verwachten Je wordt om 07.00 uur uit je hotel gepickt en we zullen vanuit Nairobi door de vloer van de Great Rift Valley rijden, terwijl we stoppen onderweg naar curiosa en bewonderen en ons vergapen aan de adembenemende uitzichten op de steile helling langs de weg. Je arriveert voor je dag game drive rond dit prachtige ornithologische spektakel van het "roze" Lake Nakuru. Het meer ondersteunt miljoenen roze flamingo's en wordt daarom het "roze van Lake Nakuru genoemd als een van de 56 verschillende diersoorten, waaronder grote katten, de zwarte bemande leeuw, de jachtluipaard en de luipaard en andere grote dieren zoals de witte neushoorn en de buffel. Om 13:30 uur, neem je je lunch in de Sarova Lion Hill Game lodge die uitkijkt op dit grote meer of equevalent. Daarna om 1500hr vertrekt u naar Nairobi en arriveert rond 18:00 uur.

We were informed the night before that they did not have enough people, so our trip was cancelled. Very disappointing! We did get our money back but missed out on the trip to Lake Nakuru National Park

We, as a group of two people, had an overall positive experience during the tour. Promptly at 6:30 AM, we were picked up in a small sedan. However, contrary to the advertised amenities, the sedan did not include water or WiFi for the trip. Fortunately, the driver was kind enough to make a stop at a gas station so we could purchase some water. We arrived at Lake Nakuru around 9:30 AM, where an additional entrance fee of $60 per person was required. We spent approximately two hours at the park but missed out on some attractions due to the limitations of the small sedan. We requested a transfer to a van with higher clearance to navigate the challenging terrains, but the driver ignored our request. Despite this, we weren't too upset as our main interest was seeing the rhinos and flamingos - which we saw. We departed around 12 PM and returned to Nairobi by 4 PM. It's worth noting that the driver solely fulfilled the role of a driver and was not a guide, thus there were questions he couldn't answer. For an additional cost, the park provided a guide. Although we were content with seeing everything we desired, considering the price we paid, our experience could have been better.

It was a very long day but well worth the investment. Our guide Erick had to find another route as part of the normal route was diverted. This however gave us the opportunity to pass through many small villages. He managed to get us there and back at a reasonable time and we have to say thanks to him especially. Lake Nakuru itself did not disappoint. Lots of wildlife and a beautiful setting. We would love to go back there for a few days, but have lots of good memories already.

The good driving to and from and the excellent bird and animal sightings. Particularly impressive were the large herds of zebra by the huge flocks of flamingos.
