Deze spannende dag excursie is ontworpen voor diegenen die willen genieten van het beste van Sicilië, het prachtige Taormina en het uitzicht vanaf Mt. Etna. Geniet van een rit naar de Etna, waar je je excursie begint. In de namiddag verken je Taormina, een historische stad die beroemd is om zijn Griekse tempel, het oude amfitheater en een onvergetelijk panorama over de zee.

Taormina, spectaculair gelegen aan de rand van een berg, is een van de populairste zomerbestemmingen van Sicilië, een chique vakantieoord dat populair is bij vakantiegangers en diegenen die willen proeven van Siciliaanse dolce vita. Taormina werd opgericht in de 4e eeuw voor Christus en genoot een grote welvaart onder de Griekse heerser Gelon II en later onder de Romeinen, maar raakte in een diepe duisternis nadat hij in 1087 door de Noormannen was veroverd. De reïncarnatie als toeristische bestemming dateert uit de 18e eeuw, toen Noord-Europeanen ontdekten het tijdens de Grand Tour. Onder zijn fans was DH Lawrence, die hier tussen 1920 en 1923 woonde.
De Etna is de hoogste vulkaan in Europa en een van de meest actieve ter wereld. De indrukwekkende grootte (meer dan 3327 meter hoog met een gemiddelde basale diameter van 40 km) kijkt uit over de hele regio. De spectaculaire uitbarstingen en de vurige lavastromen hebben altijd de interesse gewekt van wetenschappers, samen met de nieuwsgierigheid van bezoekers van over de hele wereld. Sinds 2013 staat de Etna op de Werelderfgoedlijst van Unesco vanwege zijn geologische bijzonderheden van planetaire relevantie.
Het oude theater (het teatro greco, of "Grieks theater") is grotendeels gebouwd in baksteen en is daarom waarschijnlijk van Romeinse datum, hoewel het plan en de opstelling in overeenstemming zijn met die van Griekse, in plaats van Romeinse, theaters; vandaar wordt verondersteld dat de huidige structuur werd herbouwd op de fundamenten van een ouder theater uit de Griekse periode. Met een diameter van 120 meter (na een uitbreiding in de 2e eeuw) is dit theater het tweede grootste in zijn soort in Sicilië (na dat van Syracuse); het wordt vaak gebruikt voor opera- en theatervoorstellingen en voor concerten. Het grootste deel van de originele stoelen is verdwenen, maar de muur die de hele cavea omringde, is bewaard gebleven, en het proscenium met de achterwand van de scena en de aanhangsels, waarvan alleen sporen overblijven in de meeste oude theaters, zijn hier bewaard in enkelvoud integriteit en dragen veel bij aan het schilderachtige effect, evenals aan het belang van de ondergang. Uit de nog bestaande fragmenten van architecturale decoraties leren we dat het van de Korinthische orde was en rijkelijk versierd. Sommige delen van een tempel zijn ook zichtbaar, omgebouwd tot de kerk van San Pancrazio, maar het gebouw is van kleine omvang.

Last week, we had a fantastic tour with Lucca from the cruise port in Messina. Lucca was waiting for us in the port in a comfortable Mercedes car. He easily accommodated my husband's needs as a person with limited mobility who uses a walker/rollator. At my request, he change our tour to take us to a winery on Mt. Etna since my husband would not be able to walk around on the mountain and see things. He also got us to Taormina before the crowds so we could see the beautiful city without so many people. It was the perfect combination of talking/explaining the history of the island, and leaving us alone. He also took us to some amazing viewpoints that you wouldn't get to see on a larger tour. It was really a fantastic day and made us both want to return to Sicily again so we could spend more time and really enjoy this beautiful place.

I was the organizer of our 8 person group, and having used "Rome In Limo" in the past, I had no doubt that we were in store for another fabulous tour. Our Tour Guide Luca, picked us up at the port right on time as expected. He was extremely knowledgeable and polite, and he was very accommodating to everyones needs. He took us to more of the small surrounding towns than i had expected, and in each one walked us through the history and highlights of each. He made sure that were all safe and comfortable during the entire tour. I feel that his outgoing personality is certainly reflective of the "Quality" tour guides that Rome In Limo employs for all of their tours. Having been on many other cruise tours over the years, I truly feel that Rome In Limo is the "Cadillac" of the tour providers. A rating of AAA+++ is not enough for this tour guide and his company. Well done Luca!

Our driver picked us up from the Port and showed us around Taormina! Absolutely Gorgeous! He knew all the right spots to stop and/or pick us up which we conveniently located and didn't waste time. Our stop at the Winery was awesome. We had a great view looking out to the mountains, the wine and charcuterie plates were pleasing to the eye and the palate. Roberto helped us make the most of our time at our stop in Messina.
