Dagtocht naar Kiambethu-theefarm in Limuru vanuit Nairobi

Op slechts een klein eindje rijden van het hart van Nairobi neemt deze privétour van 6 uur je mee naar Kiambethu Farm in Limuru, die een rustig inzicht geeft in het leven op een kolonistenboerderij. Kiambethu, gelegen op 7200 voet, werd in 1910 gekocht en gekweekt door AB McDonell. Hij was de eerste persoon die thee commercieel verbouwde, maakte en verkocht in Kenia - nu een van de grootste exportproducten van Kenia, die je nu kunt proeven. Vijf generaties hebben op de boerderij gewoond en deze wordt momenteel gerund door zijn kleindochter Fiona Vernon.

Haal je om 09.45 uur op bij je hotel of verblijfplaats in Nairobi CBD en start de rit naar Limuru die om 11.00 uur aankomt en bij een kopje thee of koffie wordt de geschiedenis van de boerderij en het theezetten informeel uitgelegd, gevolgd door een gelegenheid om te zien thee in het veld. Maak vervolgens een wandeling in het inheemse bos met onze lokale Keniaanse gids die de planten identificeert en uitlegt hoe ze traditioneel worden gebruikt. Pas op voor de Colobus-apen en wandel door de tuinen met een grote verscheidenheid aan vogels en bloemen. Keer terug naar het huis om te genieten van een drankje voor de lunch op de veranda met prachtig uitzicht over de theevelden naar de Ngong Hills. Geniet van uw drie-gangen lunchbuffet van ons vaste menu, bereid met groenten uit de tuin en desserts worden overgoten met room van onze kudde Channel Island-koeien.

The Kiambethu visit itself was great and very interesting - I learned a lot! Being invited into Fiona's home was special and the lunch was delicious. (One suggestion in that respect would be to seat solo travellers / couples together with others. As it was we had to re-arrange ourselves so as to meet and chat with other guests). The one less fun aspect was the journey there; the roads are not good and the situation was exacerbated by travelling in a rickety car with poor syspension.

I had booked the visit to the tea farm with lunch, which they "were really happy to conduct". The day before they canceled my trip to the tea farm, saying "they tried to make the booking but could not get a space". I made the booking 3 weeks in advance however, so this seems strange. Guess something went wrong on their side. They proposed to go to the coffe farm (without lunch) which I accepted. The guide on the coffee farm was good and enjoyable. I won the competition in guessing the different types of coffee. The driver Stephen was also good, although he arrived at 10am instead of 9.30am, but I guess there was a miscommunication on their side due to change in tour. The coffee tour was good due to the guide there and the driver. But it is of course not the tour I payed for.
