Cradle of Humankind Werelderfgoed

Beschrijving

Mo was a great guide. Very friendly and knowledgeable. I’d recommend others to do this trip and others with Mo.
It was great experience with our amazing driver, Mo. Highly recommended.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that covers 53,000 hectares and contains more than 300 cave systems. Its importance lies in the fact that more than 40% of the world's hominid fossils have been found in this region, offering crucial insights into human evolution. The Maropeng museum serves as a central point for the exhibition of fossils. Some caves are privately owned or difficult to access, making the museum essential for inclusive public access, especially for visitors with medical or mobility issues. The Maropeng museum was built underground to honor the origins of the fossils and features interactive exhibits and reconstructions that allow visitors to engage with the history and science of human evolution. It is recommended to complement the visit to the museum with a tour of the Sterkfontein Caves located near Maropeng.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We’re glad you found the Cradle of Humankind and Maropeng informative and meaningful. It’s wonderful that you highlighted the importance of the site, the fossils, and the educational value of the museum. We appreciate your insights and hope you had an enriching experience exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our tour guide Byron was terrific! He was prompt with his pick up and he was very friendly and told us a lot of great history about the area. The tour itself was very interesting but rather low key. This made it a great half day activity for us having just come to town.

It was a fascinating day out with my guide Mo. He picked me up from my hotel near the airport and it turned out I was the only person on the tour. The vehicle was clean and modern and Mo drove professionally and safely. He was informative, friendly, funny and helpful. I was offered a bottle of water which was lovely on a warm day. We went to the Cradle of Humankind museum first followed by the visit to the caves which included lots of stairs down and then back up to the surface. There are no stalagmites or other limestone features as they were all mined many years ago but it’s fascinating to hear about the human discoveries in the area and see the underground lake. Be aware you need to wear a hard hat (supplied) and be able to crawl and scramble through low sections. I really enjoyed the day out and felt safe doing the tour on my own with my professional guide Mo who made the day for me.

It’s great that you felt safe and well taken care of throughout the visit to the Cradle of Humankind and caves.
