Gangaramaya is een van de oudste boeddhistische tempels in Colombo, aan het eind van de 19e eeuw begonnen door de beroemde geleerde monnik Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera. Na de Eerwaarde Sri Sumangala nam zijn belangrijkste leerling Devundera Sri Jinaratana Nayake Thera het bestuur van de tempel over. Hij was het die de basis legde om de kleine tempel te bekeren tot een instituut van internationale afrekening. De volgende belangrijkste zittende was de Ven. Devundara Keerthi Sri Sumangala Jinaratana Vacissara Thera, de leraar van de Ven. Galboda Gnanissara, die heeft gewerkt om de Gangaramaya te maken tot wat het nu is: veel meer dan een tempel in de conventionele term, maar een plaats van aanbidding, een zetel van leren en een cultureel centrum.
Het gebouw in neo-barokke stijl werd gebouwd tijdens het Britse koloniale tijdperk om de Wetgevende Raad van Ceylon te huisvesten, en was een idee van Sir Henry McCallum. Dit werd vervolgens opgenomen in een voorstel van een commissie om het nieuwe gebouw te bouwen voor het secretariaat, de raadkamer en de regeringskantoren op teruggewonnen land aan de noordkant van Galle Face, dat in 1920 door de regering werd goedgekeurd.
Galle Face is een 5 hectare groot oceaanstadspark, dat zich uitstrekt over 500 meter langs de kust, in het hart van Colombo, de financiële en zakelijke hoofdstad van Sri Lanka. De promenade werd aanvankelijk aangelegd in 1859 door gouverneur Sir Henry George Ward, hoewel de oorspronkelijke Galle Face Green zich uitstrekte over een veel groter gebied dan vandaag wordt gezien. De Galle Face Green werd oorspronkelijk gebruikt voor paardenraces en als golfbaan, maar werd ook gebruikt voor cricket, polo, voetbal, tennis en rugby.
Independence Memorial Hall (ook Independence Memorial Hall) is een nationaal monument in Sri Lanka dat is gebouwd ter herdenking van de onafhankelijkheid van Sri Lanka van de Britse overheersing met het herstel van de volledige regeringsverantwoordelijkheid aan een Ceylonese verkozen wetgevende macht op 4 februari 1948. Het is gelegen in Independence Square (voorheen Torrington Square) in de Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo. Het herbergt ook het Independence Memorial Museum. Het monument werd gebouwd op de plaats waar de formele ceremonie die het begin van zelfbestuur markeerde, met de opening van het eerste parlement door de ZKH Prins Hendrik, hertog van Gloucester plaatsvond op een speciaal podium op 4 februari 1948. Gelegen aan het hoofd van het monument is het standbeeld van de eerste premier van het land Rt. Hon. Don Stephen Senanayake "De vader van de natie". De meeste jaarlijkse viering van de nationale onafhankelijkheidsdag wordt hier gehouden. Afgezien van een monument diende het als de ceremoniële vergaderzaal voor de Senaat van Ceylon en het Huis van Afgevaardigden van Ceylon tot het parlement werd verplaatst naar het nieuwe parlementscomplex. Momenteel is het de locatie voor religieuze evenementen en jaarlijkse nationale vieringen.
Het Colombo Museum zoals het in het begin werd genoemd, werd opgericht op 1 januari 1877. Het oprichter was destijds Sir William Henry Gregory, de Britse gouverneur van Ceylon (Sri Lanka). De Royal Asiatic Society (CB) speelde een belangrijke rol bij het bekendmaken aan Gregory van zijn benoeming tot gouverneur in 1872 dat de behoefte aan een openbaar museum met veel moeite de goedkeuring van de wetgevingsraad binnen een jaar was. The Architect of the Public Works Department, J.G. Smither was in staat om de plannen voor een nieuwe structuur op Italiaanse bouwstijl voor te bereiden. De bouw werd voltooid in 1876 en het Museum begon het in het volgende jaar functioneert. De autoriteiten van het museum ondernamen verschillende stappen om het culturele en natuurlijke erfgoed van het land voor dit doel tentoon te spreiden. Met de ontwikkeling van het museum tot internationaal niveau, kreeg het de status van een nationaal museum in de periode van Dr. P. E. P. Deraniyagala. Hij was in staat filiaalmusea te openen in Jaffna, Kandy en Ratnapura en een volwaardige afdeling van nationale musea werd in 1942 opgericht onder de wet nr. 31. De uitbreiding van het aantal filiaalmusea is nu toegenomen tot negen en bovendien een schoolwetenschappelijk programma en een mobiele museumdienst zijn ook in bedrijf.

De bouw van de Jami-Ul-Alfar-moskee begon in 1908 en het gebouw werd voltooid in 1909. De moskee kreeg de opdracht van de lokale Indiase moslimgemeenschap, gevestigd in Pettah, om hun vereiste vijf keer dagelijks gebed en Jummah op vrijdag te vervullen. De ontwerper en bouwer van de moskee was Habibu Labbe Saibu Labbe (een ongekwalificeerde architect), en was gebaseerd op details / afbeeldingen van Indo-Saraceense structuren geleverd door Zuid-Indiase handelaren, die hem opdracht hadden gegeven. Het is een hybride architectuurstijl die elementen uit de inheemse, Indo-islamitische en Indiase architectuur trekt en combineert met de neogotische en neoklassieke stijlen. Oorspronkelijk had het de capaciteit voor 1500 aanbidders, hoewel op dat moment slechts ongeveer 500 gebeden bijwoonden. Het is een opvallend rood en wit snoepgestreept gebouw met twee verdiepingen, met een klokkentoren, en doet denken aan de Jamek-moskee in Kuala Lumpur, Maleisië (gebouwd in 1910). Voordat andere bezienswaardigheden werden gebouwd, beweren sommigen dat de Jami Ul-Alfar-moskee werd herkend als het symbool van Colombo door matrozen die de haven naderden. In 1975 kocht de moskee, met de hulp van de Haji Omar Trust, een aantal van de aangrenzende eigendommen en startte met de bouw van een uitbreiding naar de moskee om de capaciteit te vergroten tot 10.000.

picture is beautiful but the street where it is main street very busy not to do with small children there are cars and a lot of tuk tuks driven and motorcycles you have to be very careful not to get hit

We rented a van for 6 people and had a wonderful day! Our guide Khan was so delightful! He was kind, polite, helpful, and knowledgeable . He took us to all the sites we wanted to see, and was with us every step of the way to help us or answer any questions we may have. The driver was great too and always made sure the motor and a/c were on when we got back into the van. Khan's wife had just had a baby 12 hours before our tour, and he shared a photo of his beautiful baby girl with us. It was a truly memorable day.
We booked a van for 6 people and toured the sites and did some shopping as well. Our guide Khan was wonderful! He was charming, polite, friendly, and knowledgeable. He took us everywhere we wanted to go and stayed with us wherever we went to assist or answer any questions. The driver was great too. Whenever we came back to the van, he had already started it up so the a/c was flowing for our comfort. Khan's wife had just had a baby 12 hours earlier and he shared with us a photo of his beautiful little baby girl. He was a delight ,as was our entire day.

Really enjoyed our tour with Ferose who was an excellent guide. Saw a lot of Colombo in 3-4 hours and found it fascinating. A real mix of old and new.

2 Sisters, cruise ship delayed by hours and nothing stopped our guide Answer from meeting us as arranged, with a beaming smile and welcome, and an air-conditioned mini van for the 2 of us.. no crammed in taxis or tuktuks for us We set off for a slightly modified tour due to the ships changes, on a fun, laughter packed sightseeing afternoon. The sights were fab, assistance thoughtful and the best he could. Sometimes the language barrier got in the way but when I adjusted my fast Australian speech things were much better. We would recommend Kingfisher tours to any solo, group, family or couple.. Thanks

As I’m travelling solo and doing only a 20hrs connection in Sri Lanka, I had no time to waste, so I booked a guide from Kingfisher tours and they sent Ferose Masse to look after me. Ferose was extremely friendly and helpful, no words can describe how much he helped me throughout the entire day! First off, he picked me up at the airport 2 hrs prior the time we had arranged because my flight arrived early, drove me to a breakfast place, and as I had forgotten to take cash out, he lended me cash to spend during the day. From the breakky shop we went on to the Spice Garden experience, which is very nice, I learned a lot about what plants, herbs and natural medicine can do, after the quick tour around the plants we headed to the Elephant activity point, were I was able, for the first time ever, to see, wash, take photos etc of an elephant, what a magical moment!! Then we had lunch, which was provided by the company, the restaurant was very nice and lunch was plenty of options, all with extremely large portions! For last but no least, he drove me to Sigiriyu rock fortress, where I was able to experience one of the most amazing places I’ve ever seen! After spending the entire day driving me around (lots and lots of driving), telling me about the culture, food, being very nice and friendly, Ferose dropped me off at the airport. I highly recommend Kingfisher tours, not only the driver spoke english, but the car was nice and tidy, I will definitely come back. They made the most of my day here! Thank you, Ferose!
