The Chocolate Farm tour is a must for everyone. This experience was the highlight of my Medellin trip. It was worth the price and more as this was an experience worth more than the cost. The tour started with being picked up at my AirBNB so I didn’t have to Uber to any meetup location. Oscar picked each of us up in a BYD vehicle that made the trip to and from the farm EXTREMELY comfortable, so much so that I fell asleep on the ride back to my AirBNB. During the ride to the farm Oscar provided tour guide information about each building, city or location we passed. As we climbed the road to get to the farm he provided additional information about plants and animals that we encountered. Once at the farm we were introduced to the family who owns and runs the farm and they welcomed us like family. The farm tour officially starts by us walking through the farm and Oscar point out the various plants or fruit trees, as the farm grows more than just cocoa. During the tour we were able to sample various fruit grown in the farm. Then we learned about the growing stages/process of the cocoa plant. We then got to pick ripe cocoa from the different variations of cocoa plants. We saw the lab where the family makes their chocolate treats for market and was able to sample the freshest white chocolate I’ve ever tasted in my life. Then we returned to the area where they start the chocolate making process. We were met by fresh glasses of the best lemonade I’ve ever tasted made from fresh lemons and panela from the farm. So good and fresh that I asked for some to take back to my AirBNB for later. We separated the chocolate seeds from the pods that we picked off the trees. We ere able to taste them at each stage of the process. Then they showed us what the drying process looks like and how the taste changes at each stage at each stage. Then we got to experience the roasting process after the seeds had dried and again tasted them. Then we sat down and peeled the roasted seeds to just expose the final smooth cocoa seed that is ready to make chocolate. Then we ground the seeds into the paste which allows for it to be molded and combined with flavors to make the desired chocolate bar that we desired. After we made our chocolate bars, they were placed in the freezer to harden and we were served fresh bread and hot chocolate fresh from the farms cocoa. Once the chocolate bars finished freezing we were able to separate them from the mold and either enjoy them or pack them up to bring home. We also had the opportunity to taste and purchase chocolate the farm had already prepare for market. After we finished and they packed up our purchases for travel we headed back to each of our lodging destinations. A wonderful, family friendly and unique once in a lifetime experience.
Oscar is a class act and a very good tour guide. He is so knowledgeable on the land, cacao, conditions and many other topics. Genuine joy to converse with. I would recommend this tour to anyone who enjoys nature, chocolate, getting out of the city and exploring the Paisa.
Pleasant visit, nevertheless very expensive for the country in which we were located Mixed experience as a result

The visit was very informative, and the family was very kind; Oscar was very helpful.

We spent 10 days in Medellin and Jardin and this was my favorite thing we did during our vacation! This tour was INCREDIBLE. Our guide, Oscar, was so warm and kind and helpful. He did a great job of engaging our kids in the tour and conversation and made it all really accessible and fun. We speak Spanish so we did our tour in Spanish but his English was also quite good so I think either is an option. We drove about 1.5 hours to this beautiful family owned finca where Sandra and Oscar led us on a chocolate making journey. We got to learn about the different types of cacao plants, pick the fruit, scrape out and taste the seeds, then we learned about the process to go from seed to chocolate bar. My kids loved grinding the chocolate into powder themselves, choosing their flavors/ingredients to mix in and making their own chocolates. The setting is serene and beautiful and the family was very kind and welcoming. I 100% recommend!
Thank you very much for your wonderful review. We’re delighted to know this was the highlight of your vacation and that Oscar made the experience warm, engaging, and fun for the whole family. We truly appreciate your recommendation and look forward to welcoming you again.
I did not know what to expect when I signed up. I felt it would be interesting to learn the process of making chocolate. It was much more than that. I had Oscar as my guide. He was awesome, explaining regions and history on our drive up. When at the location which is extremely beautiful we met with the family that runs the farm. They were welcoming and friendly and it was such an organic experience. Picking the Cocao, seeing and experiencing the process. Being part of the process. I absolutely loved this. The chocolate was phenomenal. By the time you’re done it’s sad leaving. You really feel like family.
Thank you very much for your wonderful review. We’re delighted to know you enjoyed the chocolate tour with Oscar and that the drive, the welcoming family, and the hands-on experience made it so special. Amazing private tour. Guide spoke excellent English. They pick you up at your hotel. Drive about 50 mins from city to the countryside and go in very steep hills to get to the finca(country farm). Once there you will be greeted by the family and farm dogs running cacao farm. They will provide special boots. They will walk you around the cacao farm and explain the various types of cacao they grow. You will pick cacao directly from the tree. You then get to taste the fruit itself. And learn about the fermentation process. Roast and then deshell the seeds. They will let you sample the cacao percentages. We chose 100%. You will then grind it and get to mold your own chocolate and can add ingredients to your liking. We added cinnamon, ginger, powdered milk, salt etc. they will put in freezer to set. Then you get drink fresh hoy chocolate with warm bread. It’s hard to explain just how beautiful of an experience it is to enjoy this light meal while bird watching and seeing the majestic Mountain Views. In addition to taking home the chocolates you made. You can purchase the best grade caca for crazy cheap money 20-40k Colombian pesos. About 5-10 American dollars. I normally pay 60-100 in the states for good quality cacao. It is labeled so you can bring it home.this is way better than what’s available back home.
Thank you so much for your detailed and wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear you had such a memorable experience at the cacao farm and enjoyed every step of the chocolate-making process. It's great to know you appreciated the family hospitality, the beautiful mountain views, the fresh chocolate, and the opportunity to connect with the local cacao culture. We'll be sure to share your kind words with Oscar and the farm team. Thank you for highlighting this experience for future travelers!
An excellent tour, to learn more about Colombian culture, in this case with cocoa. The guide Oscar and the owner of the Sandra estate have been most friendly and open, making us feel at home.
¡Muchas gracias por tu reseña! Nos alegra saber que disfrutaste la experiencia y que pudiste aprender más sobre la cultura del cacao en Colombia. También nos encanta saber que Oscar y Sandra los hicieron sentir como en casa. Agradecemos mucho tu recomendación y tus amables palabras.
Went on a chocolate tour on a farm high in the mountains north of Medellin. Tour guide (Oscar) was excellent, giving us history of a lot of the sights on the way, excellent English and kept us entertained. Tour was just me and my wife but Oscar and the people at the farm made us feel like friends. Cost was quite reasonable, especially given the details and personal touch of the tour. The location itself was amazing - just the variety of plants, fruits, flowers, birds... It would have been worth it just for that! The insight into how chocolate is made was fascinating with hands-on every step of the process. Would go again in a heartbeat! Had a 5 out of 5 time, no complaints! (Other than that I'll never be able to be satisfied with Hershey's chocolate again! ;) )
Thank you so much for your amazing review! We're thrilled to hear you and your wife had such a memorable experience on the chocolate tour. It's wonderful to know you enjoyed the beautiful surroundings, the hands-on cacao process, and the warm hospitality at the farm. We'll be sure to share your kind words with Oscar. And we have to admit... once you've tasted fresh farm-made chocolate, it's hard to look at store-bought chocolate the same way! Thank you for choosing to explore with us.
