Roccaporena is een gehucht van de gemeente Cascia (vanwaar het ongeveer 6 kilometer verwijderd is), gelegen op meer dan 700 meter hoogte en gelegen in een prachtige natuurlijke omgeving. Het is al jaren een bedevaartsoord, want hier werd in 1381 de heilige Rita geboren, wier leven en werk hier op veel plaatsen en op veel verschillende manieren gevierd worden. Hier kun je meer te weten komen over het huis waar ze werd geboren, de kerk waar ze trouwde, de rots van Santa Rita, de plaats waar ze bad.
Bezoek de basiliek en het klooster van St. Rita van Cascia, St. Rita was een van de meest populaire heiligen van de katholieke kerk, met haar verwante symbolen als rozen en vijgen. De basiliek werd gebouwd in 1937 en ingewijd in 1947, en het klooster waar ze veertig jaar woonde, werd herbouwd in de 18e eeuw en herbergt de nonnen van de Augustijnse gemeenschap.
Het was een belangrijk versterkt centrum van de Umbriërs, een Romeinse kolonie en vervolgens een gemeente (90 v.Chr.). Na de val van het Romeinse rijk werd het eerst gelegerd door Theodorik, de koning van de Visigoten, en vervolgens door de Byzantijn Belisarius. Veroverd door Totila, werd het herbouwd door de Byzantijnse Narses. In de vroege middeleeuwen was het de hoofdstad van het Lombardische hertogdom. In 1155 werd het veroverd en verwoest door Federico Barbarossa en na een reeks gevechten tussen Welfen en Ghibellijnen werd het heroverd door kardinaal Albornoz, die het veilig stelde voor de Kerk en er een belangrijk centrum van de Pauselijke Staat van maakte. Het belangrijkste monument van de stad is de kathedraal. Gebouwd in Romaanse stijl in de 12e eeuw, is de gevel versierd met een groot mozaïek in Byzantijnse stijl (1207). Binnen is er een fresco met de Madonna en de Heiligen van Pinturicchio, de bronzen buste van Urbanus VIII van Bernini en een buitengewone cyclus van fresco's van Filippo Lippi.
Rocca Alborziana, een middeleeuws fort, gelegen op de top van de Sant'Elia-heuvel met uitzicht op de stad Spoleto. Het is het belangrijkste bastion van het vestingwerk dat door paus Innocentius VI is gebouwd, om het gezag van de Kerk in de gebieden van Midden-Italië militair te versterken en duidelijker te maken, met het oog op de nu ophanden zijnde terugkeer van de pauselijke zetel naar Rome na de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw. verblijf in Avignon.
De Duomo is het belangrijkste monument van de stad. De kerk van Sant'Eufemia dateert uit de 12e eeuw, een interessant Romaans gebouw waarvan de apsis uitkijkt op de trap die leidt naar Piazza Duomo, de kerk van Santi Giovanni e Paolo en de abdij van San Ponziano, terwijl de kerk van San Ponziano dateert uit de 12e eeuw. tot de 13e eeuw. Domenico, de kerk van San Nicolò en het stadhuis. Van groot belang zijn de kerk van San Paolo inter vineas (10e eeuw), met een belangrijke cyclus van fresco's uit de 13e eeuw, en de kerk van San Pietro, waarvan de oorsprong teruggaat tot de 5e eeuw, met een prachtige Romaanse façade, gebeeldhouwd met buitengewone bas-reliëfs.
Het Romeinse theater werd gebouwd in de tweede helft van de 1e eeuw voor Christus. onmiddellijk binnen de stadsmuren en bleef in gebruik tot de 4e eeuw. In de Romeinse tijd ontstond er een diepe scheur in de treden, wellicht als gevolg van een aardbeving. Tijdens de vroege middeleeuwen werden op het toneel de kerk van S. Agata en het paleis van de familie Corvi gebouwd. In 1320 werden vierhonderd Welfen opgesloten en na twee jaar vermoord in de gangen van het theater, dat als gevangenis werd gebruikt. In 1395 vestigden de benedictijnse nonnen zich in Palazzo Corvi en het theater, nu ondergronds, werd de kloostergang van het klooster.
Spoleto, een middeleeuwse stad, is tot op de dag van vandaag goed bewaard gebleven. Bewonder de intacte Romeinse poortruïnes rond de stad. Porta San Pietro of Porta Monterone, aan het einde van de gelijknamige straat, nog steeds goed bewaard gebleven, heeft een dubbele boog en is versierd met vier hoogreliëfs, de wapenschilden van de stad.

This was a tour of a lifetime! I have always had a devotion to St Rita, and to be able to witness where she lived, was married, prayed, and died was incredibly emotional. Elizabeth was the BEST tour guide you could ask for, and Artu was a superb driver. I was solo so Elizabeth tailored the tour to my needs. She was incredibly knowledgeable and taught me so much about the area and St Rita’s life. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I would not hesitate to take this tour. It’s long and windy road and needs more energetic people to lead it . The lady was nice but she couldn’t walk because of knee issues
