Maak een wandeling door het ecosysteem van het primaire nevelwoud, daarna de intercontinentale waterafdeling en maak uiteindelijk een geweldige wandeling door de hooglanden om het unieke Polylepis-bos te verkennen. Het park omvat ongeveer 768 meren op een oppervlakte van 70.533 hectare. Het is een van de belangrijkste waterbronnen in Cuenca en Ecuador

Cajas National Park ligt op een kleine 40 minuten rijden van Cuenca. Het heeft internationale bekendheid gekregen in verschillende categorieën, zoals: Wetland of International Importance door RAMSAR en Biosphere Reserve door UNESCO in 2013. We bezoeken eerst de scheidende binnenwateren en daarna beginnen we aan een gematigde wandeling van 2 ½ uur (afhankelijk van het tempo van de groep) in de hooglanden door het heide-ecosysteem van wetlands en meren. Onze natuurgids zal enkele van de endemische flora spotten en enkele van de belangrijkste feiten over de geologie, geschiedenis en cultuur van het gebied uitleggen. Daarna komen we bij het unieke bos van polylepis-bomen, die worden beschouwd als enkele van de hoogst groeiende bomen ter wereld. Voordat we terugkeren naar Cuenca, lunchen we in een traditioneel restaurant in de omgeving. De specialiteit is forel!
Daarna vervolgen we onze tour met een zachte wandeling van 1 ½ uur in het Llaviuco-gebied, gelegen in het lagere deel van het deel van het park door het ecosysteem van het primaire bergbos, ook bekend als "nevelwoud". Dit is een geweldige kans om te acclimatiseren terwijl onze natuurgids u enkele van de belangrijkste aspecten van de lokale flora en fauna laat zien.

- Voor het ophalen van hotels met gedeelde tours begint het ophalen vóór deze tijd, de exacte ophaaltijd wordt bij herbevestiging aangegeven.
- Vegetarische/Veganistische/Glutenvrije/Lactosevrije opties zijn beschikbaar, gelieve dit tijdens het reserveren aan te geven indien nodig.
- Voor 1 tot 6 passagiers zal ook een tweetalige gids de chauffeur zijn. Voor meer dan 6 passagiers wordt een chauffeur en een tweetalige gids verstrekt. Max groepsgrootte 15 reizigers.

It is a unique experience. Our guide, Xavier, is a man with great knowledge of the Park and unmatched kindness. His explanations and teachings were very valuable to us. He took his time during the walk and was always attentive to us, asking how we felt and making pauses during the tour. We learned about the vegetation and wildlife of the Park because Xavier explained everything to us in detail. Very beautiful tour!
Fabulous walk in El Cajas national park with an excellent guide, Diego. He was very knowledgeable and patient as the altitude slowed me down on some of the steep uphills. Please note that the tour was not as advertised, as the laguna Llavuicu has been closed since 2024 & the tour itinerary has not been updated. The longer walk in El Cajas was an excellent alternative. Lunch was delicious.

I've seen a lot of nature parks and protected areas in Ecuador and across the Americas and can say this is truly one worth visiting. Xavier was our guide and did an excellent job of responding and adapting to collecive interests and abilities. He knows a lot about flora and fauna, making the experience truly excellent. There were so many trail options, and he did a great job describing them so we could decide the pace and difículty we were willing to go to see as much as possible. If you have never hiked in Paramo before, be prepared for cold humidity and wet shoes.

Three of us went with Diego for a trip from Cuenca to Parque national Cajas. DIego was fantastic and taught it is so much about the ecosystem and the park walk. I highly recommend this trip once you have acclimated to the high altitude in Cuenca.
