Als je het soort toerist bent dat graag buiten de gebaande paden gaat en weg van de drukte, dan kun je niet veel beter doen dan een dagje verdwalen in de fascinerende straten van de historisch kosmopolitische wijken Fener en Balat. Deze twee historische buurten, gelegen langs de Gouden Hoorn, hebben eeuwenlang de Griekse en Joodse gemeenschappen van Constantinopel gehuisvest. Deze oude wijken beloven een schilderachtige ervaring met hun retrocafés en historische gebouwen. Ze liggen buiten de belangrijkste toeristische route en hun authenticiteit maakt deze rondleiding de moeite waard.

De tour begint bij de Cibali-tabaksfabriek, het symbool van de buurt dat veel vertelt over het transformatieproces van het gebied.
De Gül-moskee zal onze tweede stop zijn met zijn mysterieuze verhaal, dat ons gaat vertellen hoe Byzantijnse en Ottomaanse culturen werden geïntegreerd.
Daarna gaan we richting Fener, dat zijn bezoekers een fantastische ervaring biedt met zijn authentieke sfeer en vele interessante kerken. De Grieks-orthodoxe patriarchale kerk is een essentieel onderdeel van deze tour omdat het de meest heilige plaats is voor alle 300 miljoen orthodoxe mensen in de hele wereld.
Kerk van St. Maria van de Mongolen is de enige Byzantijnse kerk van Constantinopel die niet werd omgebouwd tot een moskee. Sinds de val van Constantinopel stond de heilige Maria van de Mongolen altijd open voor het Grieks-orthodoxe volk en heeft het stand gehouden sinds de voltooiing ervan in 1281.
Fener Greek High School for Boys zal ons in al zijn glorie verwelkomen. Het is de oudste nog bestaande en meest prestigieuze Grieks-orthodoxe school in Istanbul, Turkije. Daarna nemen we de smalle straatjes en hellingen met kleurrijke cafés, restaurants en antiekwinkels van de buurt.
De rest van de tour zal in Balat zijn, waar de minder welvarende Grieken en Joden van Istanbul woonden en de thuisbasis van een verbazingwekkend aantal kerken, moskeeën en synagogen. Lopend door de kleuraccenten en de levendigheid van het straatleven, de wirwar van waslijnen op de afbrokkelende gebouwen, de synagogen, de kerken en het labyrint van geplaveide straten.
De Ahrida-synagoge is een van de oudste in heel Istanbul. De ooit bloeiende Joodse wijk Balat werd bediend door de grote Ahrida-synagoge en het werd een van de belangrijkste gebouwen in de hele buurt. Verschillende renovaties door de eeuwen heen hebben het oorspronkelijke architectonische ontwerp behouden.
Sveti Stefan Bulgarian Church, de enige kerk ter wereld die volledig van staal is gemaakt.

Friendly, knowledgable guide. Excellent discussions on Turkish history and society. St. Georges's and St. Steven's churches are beautiful. Rest of the neighbourhood is beautiful and interesting without any particular "wow" factors. The views over the sea are beautiful. Be aware that some of the streets are very steep and could be slippery in the rain.
1 THE GUIDE WAS NOT INTRODUCED. Claiming for washap his fault, he indicated that he was sorry but that he was on vacation, he did not remember our visit. We had many expectations with this visit but we had to do it on our own without a guide. I mean, we can't say what the neighborhoods represent because there was no explanation.

No one turned up or contacted us . We crossed the city by tram to be there for 1015 and waited until 1045 in the rain and nothing . Tried calling but no response. Appalling
