Drie decennia zijn verstreken sinds de ondergang van het communisme. Ondanks de enorme groei die Roemenië sindsdien heeft doorgemaakt, zijn de overblijfselen van dit regime nog steeds zichtbaar. Dat is de reden waarom de meeste aspecten van het dagelijks leven door het communisme zijn getransformeerd: van de politieke klasse tot de openbare gezondheidszorg tot de stedelijke architectuur. Ontdek de vele schokkende verhalen over hoe het leven was onder het communisme. Leer verder over de brutaliteit waarmee dit systeem in Roemenië werd gehandhaafd. Krijg inzicht in het fascinerende levensverhaal van dictator Ceausescu, van zijn kindertijd tot zijn executie. Het Unirii-plein, gelegen in het midden van de stad, werd ontworpen tijdens de laatste fase van het communisme in Roemenië. Spectaculair dankzij zijn prachtige fonteinen, wordt het ook doorkruist door de grootste laan van Boekarest: de voormalige Victory of Socialism Boulevard. Als je hier staat en een wandeling maakt over de boulevard, zul je de megalomane visie onthullen die de Roemeense dictator voor Boekarest in petto had.
Het Paleis van het Parlement is het op een na grootste gebouw ter wereld na het Pentagon en het duurste administratieve gebouw. We zullen dit gebouw van buitenaf bekijken en een echt gevoel krijgen van zijn gigantische omvang. Hiervoor waren enorme hoeveelheden geld, materialen en werkinspanning nodig. Bovendien is deze structuur tot stand gekomen door het Roemeense volk in de jaren tachtig aan allerlei tekorten te onderwerpen. Je hoort het hele verhaal over hoe dit enorme gebouw werd gemaakt, wat de lokale bevolking ervan vindt terwijl je het vanuit verschillende hoeken bekijkt. Tegenover het paleis staat het Academia Romana gebouw, een grootschalige constructie in een vergelijkbare stijl. Het was bedoeld voor de vrouw van de dictator, Elena Ceausescu. Net als een aantal andere gebouwen uit de jaren tachtig was het echter nog maar half af. Tegenwoordig is een groot deel ervan in puin achtergelaten als een pijnlijke herinnering aan de megalomane visie van de dictator op Boekarest
Je ontdekt hoe sommige kerken werden verwoest terwijl andere op een schokkende manier werden gered tijdens de communistische periode. Kerken verborgen achter de utilitaire gebouwen zijn een merkwaardig gezicht dat uitbeeldt hoe de Communistische Partij omging met religie. De Mihai Voda-kerk is een religieuze plaats uit de middeleeuwen die gelukkig de sloopwaanzin heeft overleefd en is een getuigenis van hoe Boekarest er vroeger uitzag.
Het Revolutieplein is waar het communistische regime begon en waar het allemaal eindigde met de volksprotesten tijdens de revolutie van 1989. Je ziet het gebouw waarin het kantoor van Ceausescu was gevestigd, het balkon waar de dictator zijn laatste toespraak hield en de plaatsen waar de eerste massademonstratie in Boekarest. Hier zult u begrijpen wat er gebeurde met degenen die demonstreerden tegen het totalitarisme, het verhaal achter het monument dat aan hen werd opgedragen en wat er gebeurde in de nasleep van de revolutie.
De plek waar in 1989 de belangrijkste protesten tegen het communisme plaatsvonden, waarbij honderden mensen werden afgeslacht vanwege hun geloof in een vrije samenleving.

I am deeply disappointed with this experience; it is definitely not worth the price. The tour guide (I believe his name was Stefan) had a terrible attitude. The entire time he was rushing us and didn't give us enough time to actually enjoy the places we visited. The icing on the cake was when he called me just to yell at me because I decided to stay behind instead of returning with the group. Since I couldn’t enjoy the castles properly, I explained to him that it was my birthday and I wanted to stay longer to explore. He rudely snapped back, asking if I thought he was going to wait for me until tomorrow. Terrible service altogether. He didn’t explain anything well; we paid for a Spanish tour, but he spoke in English most of the time, and when he did speak Spanish, it was barely understandable. On top of that, he was rude and completely lacked empathy.
I really enjoyed the Bucharest Under Communism: Life, Terror & Hope tour last weekend and it was a really great experience. The tour was very interesting and well explained, with lots of insights into what life was actually like during the communist period. Also as a bonus we got overall tips for the city (where to eat, where to go to etc) The guide made the history easy to understand and engaging, sharing stories that you wouldn’t get just by reading or visiting on your own. It really helps you see Bucharest or Romania from a local.

Stefania was an incredible guide from start to finish! She communicated before the tour, met the two of us (no one else booked on) in pouring rain (our choice, we were unable to do any other day, though this was offered to us) and Stefania was so knowledgeable, professional and kind. We had already done the morning tour of the old city and in the afternoon we also did the “communism” tour. Laura was professional, nice and explained so many things that we did not know.
