Met onze ervaren en gediplomeerde gids beginnen we met een kort inleidend gesprek over Trinity College en haar geschiedenis vanaf 1592....ga dan de universiteitscampus op.
Op Trinity College bezoeken we The Book of Kells, een verlucht manuscript evangelieboek dat in de negende eeuw ontstond. Het wordt beschouwd als een van Ierlands grootste culturele schatten en wordt algemeen beschouwd als een voorbeeld van insulaire kunst. Het boek is een meesterwerk van de middeleeuwse boekkunst en bevat ingewikkelde ontwerpen, uitgebreide belettering en kleurrijke illustraties. Het is samengesteld uit vier evangeliën: Matteüs, Marcus, Lucas en Johannes, en is geschreven in het Latijn. Het Book of Kells bevindt zich in de Trinity College Library in Dublin, Ierland, waar het jaarlijks door miljoenen bezoekers wordt gezien.
We staan buiten en passeren de Bank of Ireland op College Green voor een eerder en misschien nobeler voorbeeld van herbestemming in het stadsgebouw. Staand op het verkeerseiland op College Green en omhoog kijkend, is het moeilijk om niet onder de indruk te zijn. Dit is zeker de grootste bank die je ooit hebt gezien. Er is een koninklijk wapenschild. Standbeelden van Hibernia (de Latijnse naam voor Ierland), trouw en handel. En op grondniveau een paar kanonnen. Oh, en een wachtkist. Het zijn allemaal aanwijzingen voor de vroegere rol van dit gebouw, omdat het de eerste 61 jaar van zijn bestaan de thuisbasis was van de Ierse parlementsgebouwen. In 1800 stemde het Ierse parlement zichzelf echter uit het bestaan en in 1803 werd zijn voormalige hoofdkwartier het vlaggenschip van de Bank of Ireland. Het had een verbazingwekkende geschiedenis tijdens die tijden van kolonisatie en opstand. Het gebouw was het eerste speciaal gebouwde tweekamerhuis van het parlement in Europa (‘tweekamerhuis’ betekent dat het twee ‘kamers’ had: een Lagerhuis en een Hogerhuis.)
Een laatste geschiedenispraatje van Dublin - 'Through The Ages' naar het standbeeld van Molly Malone bevindt zich op korte afstand van waar je begon bij College Green en Trinity College. Molly Malone was een semi-historische, semi-legendarische figuur die werd herdacht in het nummer 'Cockles and Mussels', een Dublins volkslied. Een mooie gelegenheid voor foto's van uw bezoek.

Met with Mick out lot tour guide who was very knowledgeable about the history of Ireland and the Book of Kells. The book itself is very impressive in how precise the writing and the graphics appeared after all these years. It almost looks AI generated how clean and precise each line of script appears on the page. Mind-blowing if you think that they were only had writing with quills. The Long Hall library will be closing in 2027 for a 4-year restoration while they digitize the indexing of the millions of books that are on the shelves which were almost empty when we got there. Lucky not to have to wait 5 years to see it. Overall a wonderful experience and Mick was great tour guide! Thank you Mick!
Sites were incredible, but Noel the tour guide made it even more so. His knowledge of history combined with a fantastic sense of humor was the perfect welcome to Ireland. Highly recommend.
Noel was a great guide. Very personable and funny. I had relatively low expectations for the Book of Kells, thinking “it’s just an old book”, but the entire exhibit and structure of everything really brought home why it’s such a treasured artifact. We got lots of info on the battle for Irish independence, some great pub and restaurant recommendations and the Long Room at Trinity was a real treat.

Our guide was very kind. We knew it was all walking, and my husband can handle that but we stopped for long periods and just stood at most places, with no where to sit or move much. My husband made it but had we been able to sit anywhere at the talking points it would have been so much easier. No regrets we went. We did see and learn lots, but with my husband's back we just could have used more places to sit as we listened. With those without those limitations we certainly recommend this tour.

We went on a tour with Noel and had an excellent experience. Noel was kind, knowledgeable, and funny! He made the entire experience enjoyable, included everyone in our group (we had 3 separate groups of tourists) and provided us all with a great summary of Dublin's history and key sites. The tour was a bit longer than we anticipated, so bring water, but it was well worth it. We would recommend Noel's tour group to anyone.
