Vanaf het Herzlplein en de Grote Synagoge beginnen we aan de begeleide wandeling in de Joodse wijk, inclusief belangrijke bezienswaardigheden van het getto uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog van 1944.
Stop bij de Dohány Street Synagogue, ook bekend als de Grote Synagoge, een historisch gebouw in Erzsébetváros, het 7e district van Boedapest, Hongarije. Het is de grootste synagoge van Europa, biedt plaats aan 3.000 mensen en is een centrum van het neologe jodendom. Je zult niet alleen ontdekken waarom deze synagoge architectonisch uniek is, maar je zult ook meer te weten komen over het lot van het Hongaarse jodendom ten tijde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, en leren hoeveel internationaal beroemde personages Hongaarse joden waren.
Stop bij de Moorse Rumbach Sebestyén utca-synagoge die in 1872 werd gebouwd door de Oostenrijkse Secessionistische architect Otto Wagner voor de "gematigde conservatieve" gemeenschap. De interieurdecoraties schitteren in hun oude, sierlijke licht na de langverwachte facelift. Kom met ons mee en bekijk deze ongewone en mooie synagoge en ontdek hoe deze verschilt van de anderen in de omgeving.
Tijdens de oorlog hielp de Zwitserse diplomaat Carl Lutz tienduizenden joden in Boedapest te redden van vervolging en deportatie. Gelegen in het gebied van het voormalige getto van Boedapest is een monument gewijd aan zijn nagedachtenis.
In een kleine zijstraat vindt u de orthodoxe synagoge van Boedapest. De orthodoxe synagoge werd gebouwd in 1913 in een destijds zeer modern ontwerp. Het heeft late art nouveau-accenten en is overal in heldere kleuren ingericht. De glas-in-loodramen in het plafond zijn ontworpen door Miksa Róth.
We betuigen ons respect bij het gedenkteken Schoenen op de Donauoever, dat op 16 april 2005 werd onthuld, ter nagedachtenis aan de Joodse slachtoffers die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog op deze plek werden vermoord. Ze werden gedwongen hun schoenen uit te trekken voordat ze aan de oever van de rivier werden neergeschoten, hun lichamen werden weggedragen door de Donau. De sculptuur, die de achtergelaten schoenen uitbeeldt, staat als een aangrijpend symbool van verlies en herinnering.
Tegen het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden de Joden van Boedapest in een getto gedreven en een klein deel van de muur van het getto staat nog steeds in het hart van Boedapest. Kom met ons mee en ontdek de geheimen van het getto, het leven van zijn gevangenen en hun uiteindelijke lot.

Julia is extremely knowledgeable and easy to talk to while we walked around the Jewish Quarter. She provided us with a wonderful overview of many historical facts during the tour. The places she took us to were very interesting and we felt that we got an exceptional and memorable picture of the history and lives of Jews in Budapest.
I had an incredible experience with Petra as my tour guide in Budapest. She arrived at my hotel right on time and was extremely informative. Her knowledge of the Jewish history in Budapest was outstanding. She took me to the Great Synagogue and several other synagogues, explaining everything in deep detail. We also visited the Danube River to see the bronze shoes. The day was perfectly organized, and the entire history she shared was so moving. I highly recommend Petra—she was simply excellent.
