Elke stad heeft zijn winkels en koffiecultuur, maar de stad Belfast heeft een uniek verleden na 30 jaar conflict. Je gidsen zijn de oorspronkelijke chauffeurs die hun gemeenschappen moesten vervoeren door de kogels en bommen van THE TROUBLES en hun leven in gevaar brengen elke keer dat ze in hun zwarte taxi's zitten. Het noorden van Ierland is beroemd geworden door de muurschilderingen die in bijna alle delen van het land zijn geschilderd. Deze foto's van IRA-, UVF-muurschilderingen worden vaak over de hele wereld geflitst op nieuwsbulletins of gebruikt als achtergrond bij het interviewen van mensen. Ze geven vaak de geschiedenis en politieke opvattingen van beide tradities weer en zijn een manier om het grondgebied te markeren. Deze muurschilderingen zien er vaak intimiderend uit, maar ze zijn net zo'n toeristische attractie geworden als veel van de reguliere attracties in Belfast en daarbuiten.

Hoi. Sorry dat we niet ophalen van een cruiseschip, want het is enkele mijl buiten het centrum van Belfast. Maar we kunnen je ophalen buiten de poorten van het stadhuis van Belfast. Wij bieden een gratis pick-up 1 km straal van het stadhuis. De pendelbus van het cruiseschip vertrekt buiten Visit Belfast, dat is een kruising van de straat van het stadhuis. If you do one thing in Belfast, make it this tour. I had an amazing guide named Isaac whose knowledge of the history of strife between Protestants & Catholics was beyond compare. He is not a learned professor of history, but a man who grew up as the terror and killings unfolded in Belfast over a 30+ year period. It was essentially getting a 90 minute eyewitness account of events. As a kid growing up in the US in the ‘70s, I remember reading headlines and seeing network news coverage of these horrendous events. I never understood what it was all about but Isaac changed that by the time I left Belfast. I’ve been on the Emerald Isle for over two weeks now and this is by far the best thing I’ve done in that time. TAKE THIS TOUR (and ask for Isaac if you can).

Brendan our guide was a lovely friendly man. He told us the history and significance of places, murals, memorial gardens, the walls, the gates, everything. An amazing insight into what has been going on in Belfast, the history and the recent times. As a resident of England, I have never heard the real stories told by a local. Such a valuable lesson for us.
