Band of Brothers in Bastogne uit Amsterdam
Beschrijving
In één dag zie je de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden die een goed beeld geven van het Ardennenoffensief. We zullen een Duitse Panther Tank zien, de bunker waar de troepen van Patton Bastogne bereikten, McAuliffe Place met het standbeeld van de generaal en een Sherman Tank, het Mardasson Memorial met het iconische Bastogne War Museum. Natuurlijk bezoeken we de schuttersputjes van Easy Coy, 506PIR, 101st Airborne Division, de beroemde Band of Brothers en het dorp Foy, ingenomen in januari 1945. Maar houd er rekening mee dat het 3,5 uur rijden is naar Bastogne zonder verkeersopstoppingen. We houden een koffiepauze en de gids neemt een blikje koffie en wat mineraalwater mee.

U ziet een grote verzameling objecten, afbeeldingen, kaarten, uitlegpanelen, displays en geanimeerde diorama's. Het is een modern museum dat iedereen aanspreekt. We zullen ook de schuttersputjes van de Band of Brothers in het Bois Jacques bezoeken.

Vanaf het Bois Jacques treden we in de voetsporen van Easy Company, Band of Brothers in het dorp Foy. Vandaar rijden we naar Grandmenil. Bij Grandmenil werd de opmars van de Duitse speerpunt 2e SS-Panzerdivision gestopt. Deze Panther-tank getuigt

Jip Meijer was fantastic. He gave us detailed explanations complete with pictures and maps. This is the second visit to a WWII sight in less than a year with my teenage kids and both times we did a tour like the one Jip did and they were engaged from the start. My recommendation would be to stay the night down there and really take in all the culture, sites and restaurants but a day trip from Amsterdam or Brussels is very doable if that’s all the time you have.
