Vanuit Aberdeen volgen we de rivier de Dee naar Balmoral waar u in de voetsporen kunt treden van generaties Royals die dit landgoed hun thuis hebben genoemd. *Balmoral Estate is gesloten van 9 augustus tot begin oktober 2026. We bezoeken het dorp Braemar en eventueel kasteel Braemar. Maak een wandeling in het charmante Victoriaanse dorpje Ballater, verken het lokale erfgoed, het Victoriaanse treinstation en het uitzicht op de omgeving. Vervolgens bezoeken we de iconische Cambus O'May hangbrug, voordat we onze reis voortzetten naar de Tomnavarie Stone Circle. Uiteindelijk stoppen we op de terugweg naar Aberdeen bij het favoriete uitzicht van koningin Victoria op Aberdeenshire.

Balmoral is een kostbaar familiehuis voor de koninklijke familie sinds 1850, toen koningin Victoria en prins Albert deze prachtige regio kozen om hun grote ontsnapping te creëren. Een landschap met een prachtig uitzicht op de heuvels en bergen, velden met heide en de majestueuze rivier Dee die er doorheen stroomt. We raden u ten zeerste aan om naar de audiotour te luisteren. De audio deelt verhalen en leidt u rond op het landgoed. De balzaal is alleen toegankelijk voor bezoekers binnen het kasteel. De objecten in de balzaal komen uit het kasteel, en zijn allemaal objecten die eigendom zijn van de Koninklijke familie. *Balmoral Castle & Estate is gesloten van half augustus tot begin 26 oktober. Deze tour stop wordt daarna veranderd in de National Trust for Scotland's - Crathes Castle.
Het Victoriaanse dorp Ballater ligt in het hart van Royal Deeside, aan de oostelijke toegangspoort tot het Cairngorms National Park, waardoor het een van de mooiste toeristische plekken van Schotland is. Een wandeling door het dorp onthult een interessant aanbod aan speciaalzaken en een goede selectie aan restaurants en cafés waar u kunt genieten van lokaal eten en drinken. Let op de winkels die Koninklijke Warrants op hun winkelpuien uitstallen, een duidelijk teken van kwaliteit en steun van de koninklijke familie. Gelegen aan de rivier de Dee en omgeven door heuvels en bergen, is Ballater een paradijs voor buitenliefhebbers. Bezoek zeker het prachtige Victoriaanse treinstation en het toeristeninformatiecentrum met meer informatie over het dorp. Loop langs de Victoriaanse kazerne, die nog steeds in gebruik is, wanneer de koninklijke familie in Balmoral verblijft.
De Cambus O 'May-hangbrug overspant de rivier de Dee en is een erfenis uit de nalatenschap van Alexander Gordon. De voetgangersbrug, gebouwd in 1905, is 50 meter lang en brengt bezoekers naar de andere kant. De Deeside Way, een pad dat de voormalige Deeside Railway volgt, passeert het noordoostelijke uiteinde van de brug. Wandelpaden vanaf de brug leiden naar het Torphantrick-bos en het natuurreservaat Muir of Dinnet, populaire plekken voor bezoekers die houden van boswandelingen en wildzwemmen in de rivier.
Tomnaverie is een liggende steencirkel, een soort monument dat alleen in het noordoosten van Schotland voorkomt. Hun karakteristieke kenmerk is een grote steen op zijn zijkant, geflankeerd door twee rechtopstaande stenen, meestal op de zuid- of zuidwestelijke boog van de cirkel. De steencirkel omringt een grafsteen die ongeveer 4.500 jaar geleden dateert. Er is relatief weinig bekend over waarom we deze structuren hebben. Er zijn verschillende theorieën die je tijdens je bezoek zult ontdekken.
Net buiten Tarland ligt Queen's View, naar verluidt een van de favoriete uitzichten van koningin Victoria over de Howe of Cromar richting Lochnagar. We stoppen om het uitzicht te bewonderen en op een goede dag, waar je 12 verschillende heuvels en Munros kunt zien!

Beautiful day out in Balmoral Castle with a fabulous Scottish tour guide.
Balmoral is not an extravagant castle or setting. One could imagine it as a place for quiet contemplation. The gardens reflect the climate of Balmoral and are not filled with fancy rose bushes. It represents a creative and useful garden for the household.
We are sorry to see you didn't enjoy your tour with us. We will liaise with the guide who took the tour to determine if anything could be done differently.
Guide excellent. Balmoral experience is not good value when compared with other Castles, eg Stirling. No Guided information, restricted access only to 1 room with photos forbidden. Would not recommend Balmoral. Deeside leg was interesting and informative.
We are sorry to hear you found your visit to Balmoral Castle disappointing, we do mention in the tour description that only the ballroom is open visitors. We can appreciate you would have liked to see more of the building, there are special interior tour tickets, however the interior tour times don't generally work with our schedule. We are glad to see the guide on the day was excellent and that the rest of the day's tour was good.

An amazing day visiting so many scenic places! Jacqueline was an excellent and knowledgeable guide! Loved Balmoral Castle and surrounding estate! Such a serene place--no wonder the royal family loves vacationing here! Thoroughly enjoyed our stop in the quaint town of Balleter for lunch. The Cambus O'May suspension bridge was in beautiful wooded area overlooking the river Dee. The Tomnaverie Stone Circle was on the top of a hill overlooking a beautiful valley--a very spiritual place. Our final stop was the Queen's View, which offered wonderful view of the area we had just visited. Highly recommend this tour!

Unfortunately we missed the pickup, our fault… but we caught up with the group at the first stop and it was smooth sailing after that. Our guide was knowledgeable and pleasant. Gave real insight into the history and area. The group was small , about seven total which was perfect. Balmoral is pretty, more for the outdoor experience and a real feel of the royal Deeside area. We made several interesting stops including an ancient stone circle and a cool bridge over the river Dee. Lunch in Ballater was delicious at a local pub. Well worth it!
