Calakmul ligt afgelegen: daarom is het zo bijzonder en daarom is het zo ingewikkeld om het zelf op te lossen. Vergeet het huren van een auto, het zoeken naar een gids of de lange terugreis. Kies je gewenste activiteit, waar we je ophalen en boek: je dag is geregeld. Reis met een professionele gids naar Calakmul, een Mayastad omgeven door beschermd oerwoud en daarmee een UNESCO-werelderfgoedlocatie; wij regelen het vervoer en de logistiek. Drie duidelijke opties, zonder kleine lettertjes: alleen de archeologische zone; ruïnes + junglewandeling; of ruïnes + wandeling + vleermuizengrot (meer dan 3 miljoen vleermuizen bij zonsondergang). Ophalen in Bacalar, Xpujil, Chetumal en Xul-Ha; bezorging op een andere locatie zonder extra kosten. De prijs is gebaseerd op de essentie: vervoer, gids en activiteiten, zonder extra's. Tickets worden ter plaatse apart betaald; we laten u dit vóór de boeking weten, er zijn geen verborgen kosten. Het is een lange dag; met Bat Cave erbij duurt het tot zonsondergang. Wilde dieren zijn niet gegarandeerd. Zonder te gissen wat het inhoudt. Geen puzzels. Zonder overbodige extra's.

Reisroute
We beginnen met het ophalen en dan gaan we richting het Calakmul-reservaat, de reis duurt 3 uur. Eenmaal in het reservaat maken we een schilderachtige tocht door de lage tropische jungle van ongeveer 1,5 uur en stoppen we slechts kort als er wilde dieren worden waargenomen. Nadat we de jungle zijn overgestoken, verkennen we de archeologische zone van Calakmul Mixed Heritage of Humanity volgens UNESCO. We verkennen de gebieden die open zijn voor bezoekers, zoals het openbare en ceremoniële centrum, de hoogste bouwwerken van meer dan 50 meter hoog, het zonne-observatorium voor equinoxen en zonnewendes, en nog veel meer toepassingen. Veel van de gebouwen kunnen worden beklommen, dus het is nog steeds mogelijk om het uitzicht te zien dat voorheen alleen de koningen en de machtigsten van de stad konden zien. Tijdens de wandeling wordt u begeleid door een gids die informatie deelt over dit wereldberoemde park dat ooit de meest gevreesde en verheerlijkte Maya-nederzetting was.

Ophaallocaties en -tijden
Wacht 10 minuten in de lobby of buiten het hotel of Airbnb. De chauffeur of gids haalt u op in de lobby of bij de ingang van het hotel. We sturen u vooraf het type servicevoertuig en de namen van het personeel dat tijdens de tour met u meegaat.

The stop at the convenience store at the beginning is to buy breakfast and food. Even though the tour provides water and fruit, you might crave something more. There is no stop to eat and the activity does last 12 hours. Armando the tour guide and Argus the driver are excellent people and their service is super good. They give you time to do everything, very attentive to any wildlife sightings.

If you were to visit only one Mayan archaeological site, I think the excursion to Calakmul is the most impressive because the site is completely lost in the middle of the jungle and really gives a sense of adventure. Especially since the excursion is only done in small groups (my partner and I were alone with the guide and the driver) Besides the ruins, the forest tour allowed us to spot a small toucan, spider monkeys, two turkeys, a huge black pheasant, coatis, numerous birds, and some remarkable trees. Regarding the company ABC Tours, Gerardo, the guide, knows his subject perfectly well, both on the historical and archaeological level and during the walk in the forest. Finally, Checo is an excellent driver, which deserves to be highlighted because that is not always the case in tours organized in the region.

Excellent guided tour from start to finish. Taxi arrived promptly and a lovely driver (Spanish speaker) Argeo, drove for an hour to pick up our guide for the day (English Speaker) Armando. This was a great day exploring Calakmul and the biosphere reserve. Our driver Argeo and guide Armando made us feel very welcome and made sure we were comfortable and had enough food and water for the day. Armando is a very knowledgeable and a patient tour guide. Climbing up the 3 pyramids was also an amazing experience experience. The drive there didn’t seem that long because we stopped to get food and then did the nature walk, but by the time we got to the archeological site, it was already quite hot. I would personally like to get to Calakmul earlier in the day, but I understand the nature walk had to be done in the morning. Overall a fantastic experience!!

Thank you very much to our guide Armando and our driver Argeo for their kindness and explanations throughout the day! The excursion was maintained even if we were only 2 participants, which we enjoyed! Just maybe a little downside on the surprise increase in entrance tickets since booking. For the various complementary tickets, there is a charge of 525 pesos MXN per person. (End of January 2026) Snacks to plan in advance for the day, there is not much choice on the road.

The tour was great! The guide really knew the history of Calakmul and was able to answer any questions. It was a long drive from Bacalar, but totally worth it to see this extraordinary phenomenon! During our walk we also saw howling monkeys and heard them howl, it was incredible! Make sure to bring repellent, because the mosquitos are insane, but the walk is for about 40 minutes, so it’s not that bad, just be prepared. We had a great time and really enjoyed it. It’s a full day so be prepared for a long one. Would 10/10 recommend!
