Deze tour neemt je mee naar drie van de meest authentieke stadjes aan het Atitlánmeer: San Juan La Laguna, San Pedro La Laguna en Santiago Atitlán. The tour was okay. We visited three towns and had a bee, textile, and chocolate demonstration. However, based on the other reviews I was left underwhelmed by our guide. He seemed a bit shy and unsure and had difficulty communicating with our group in English. My Spanish is decent so he told me a bit more info about the history of the lake and he even asked me to help him translate. He was flexible with the pick up location and added in a stop to eat lunch but I think I would’ve preferred to go with a more experienced guide who could provide more insight to life at the lake.
Having spent considerable time in Guatemala and worked in the Lake Atitlán region, I can confidently say this is one of the most authentic cultural experiences available. This is not a tour designed to simply check off attractions—it is an opportunity to genuinely understand the people, traditions, and history that make this region so extraordinary. Our guide, Chema, shared his own community and culture with incredible warmth, honesty, and pride. Visiting San Juan La Laguna, San Pedro La Laguna, and Santiago Atitlán offered three completely different perspectives on life around the lake. Rather than simply walking through the towns, we learned the stories behind the vibrant murals, the significance of traditional textiles and natural dyes, the importance of local artisan cooperatives, and the living traditions of the Tz'utujil Maya people. The experience also includes visits to local workshops for weaving, chocolate, honey, and other traditional crafts, giving travelers the opportunity to support local families directly. One of the highlights was visiting Santiago Atitlán and learning about the history and cultural significance of Maximón. Chema answered every question thoughtfully and provided historical context that you simply wouldn't get by exploring on your own. The day never felt rushed; instead, it felt like spending time with a knowledgeable local friend who genuinely wanted us to understand and appreciate his home. If you're looking for Instagram photo stops, there are plenty. But if you're looking for meaningful cultural immersion, authentic conversations, breathtaking scenery, and a deeper appreciation of Guatemala's Indigenous heritage, this experience is absolutely worth every minute. I would recommend this tour without hesitation to anyone visiting Lake Atitlán. It was one of the highlights of my time in Guatemala and an experience I will remember long after returning home.
I was with my companion for this visit to 3 villages, guided by Chema. The tour was at our own pace, we started at 09:00 then finished at 16:00. We left by tuk-tuk to San Pedro, then lancha to San Santiago. We then returned to San Juan in lanchas and ended the tour with Chema. We exchanged a lot with him, about the history of Atilan, Maya and Spanish, the culture shock and the current life around Lake Atitlan. Chema is very professional and attentive, he gives a lot of advice and offers us a unique and pleasant experience! He arranged a cocoa ceremony, arranged transportation. He translates Mayan into Spanish, and also speaks English.
We loved our experience with Cheima. We learned a lot about Mayan culture but also a lot of other anecdotes. Cheima was always on hand to answer our questions and requests. I recommend this exceptional experience! Another big thank you
This was one of my favorite experiences at Lake Atitlán. Visiting San Juan, San Pedro, and Santiago with a local guide made a big difference, it felt more real than just sightseeing. Each village had its own vibe: San Juan was calm and artsy, San Pedro more lively, and Santiago felt more traditional and spiritual. Learning about Maximón and visiting local workshops for textiles, honey, and chocolate was a highlight. Overall, it felt authentic and personal. Definitely worth it if you want a deeper cultural experience.
Discovering these three villages of Lake Atitlán with Chema was one of our best experiences of our trip to Guatemala. We loved walking the colorful streets of San Juan la Laguna, the home village of our guide Chema. We were able to learn more about the murals and its history. We loved this village. We took the boat to discover San Pedro then Santiago de Atitlán which is also an authentic village and where Mayan culture is preserved. Chema introduced us to the deity Maximon. What an amazing experience. We recommend Chema for her kindness and explanations to better understand the Mayan tzutzuhill culture.

It was a great tour that allowed me to admire the beauty of San Juan from another point of view. Chema’s company and guide was very enriching as in addition to the tour, we learned a lot about the history of the town and its origins. Our guide was very helpful, kind, and attentive at all times, explaining everything patiently and making sure we enjoyed every part of the tour. Although English is not his first language, his effort and dedication made it easy for us to understand the tour perfectly. We speak a little Spanish, which allowed us to have excellent communication and a great connection. In addition, he works hard to improve his English to communicate better with all visitors. It was a great cultural tour, full of details that made us connect with the place. A wonderful experience that we truly enjoyed and 100% recommend!
