Geniet van het schilderachtige landschap van Minho, bekend om zijn populaire Vinho Verde, en bezoek twee van de historische steden in de regio, Guimarães en Braga, om hun architecturale erfgoed te ontdekken. De eerste stop op deze dagtour is Guimarães, de geboorteplaats van Portugal. Het stadscentrum staat sinds 2001 op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO. Bewonder het kasteel van Guimarães, daterend uit de 10e eeuw, waar je meer te weten komt over de vroege periode van de Portugese geschiedenis. Bewonder het paleis van de hertogen van Bragança en de architectuur van deze middeleeuwse stad, vol unieke gebouwen, straten en pleinen. Ga verder naar Braga, een stad die ooit werd bezet door de Romeinen en een van de belangrijkste christelijke centra van Portugal. Neem een pauze en geniet van een traditionele lunch met Vinho Verde. Ga daarna verder met het leren over de geschiedenis van Braga en breng een bezoek aan de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden, zoals de kathedraal uit de 11e eeuw, Bom Jesus do Monte en het Sameiro-heiligdom. Je komt rond 17.00 uur terug in Porto.

Bij aankomst in Guimarães beginnen we onze tour in het bovenste deel van de stad, waar het kasteel van Guimarães zich bevindt. Onze gids vertelt je over de vroege geschiedenis van Portugal terwijl je het oudste middeleeuwse kasteel van Portugal passeert en aan de afdaling naar het stadscentrum begint.
Deze kerk dateert uit de 13e eeuw en is momenteel geclassificeerd als rijksmonument. Het is een gebouw gebouwd in Romaanse stijl, dat aan het begin van de 20e eeuw werd herbouwd volgens zijn oorspronkelijke uiterlijk. Er is een legende verbonden aan deze kerk, volgens welke de eerste koning van Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, hier werd gedoopt.
Dit paleis dateert uit het begin van de 15e eeuw en de bouw ervan werd bevolen door D. Afonso (zoon van koning D. João I) ten tijde van zijn huwelijk met D. Constança de Noronha. Door de jaren heen heeft het verschillende doeleinden gehad, wat slijtage veroorzaakte. Aan het begin van de 20e eeuw begon de restauratie van het paleis. Het is geclassificeerd als nationaal monument en doet momenteel dienst als museum, met wandtapijten, meubels, Chinees porselein en schilderijen.
Langs de afdaling naar de woonwijk van de stad passeren we de Rua de Santa Maria, een van de eerste straten in Guimarães, die diende als de belangrijkste verbinding tussen het klooster van D. Mumadona Dias, de woonwijk en de Kasteel.
Dit is een sociaal plein voor de inwoners van Guimarães, waar u restaurants, bars en terrassen kunt vinden, omringd door de typische architectuur van de stad. Volgens de legende is de naam van het plein te danken aan de apostel Jacobus die hier tijdens een pelgrimstocht een beeld van de Maagd Maria achterliet. In de 12e eeuw werd daar een kerk gebouwd, die in de 19e eeuw werd afgebroken.
Largo da Oliveira is een van de meest emblematische en historische pleinen in Guimarães, Portugal. De naam komt van een oude olijfboom die vrede en traditie symboliseert. Deze plaats is door de eeuwen heen het toneel geweest van belangrijke gebeurtenissen, waaronder middeleeuwse rechtbanken en cruciale momenten in de vorming van Portugal als natie.
Naast de kerk staat Largo da Oliveira bekend om de Padrão do Salado, een monument dat de overwinning viert van D. Afonso IV op de Moren in de slag bij Salado in 1340.
Vanaf Largo da Oliveira kun je de kerk van Nossa Senhora da Oliveira - Colegiada de Guimarães zien, waarvan de oorsprong teruggaat tot een klooster dat in de eerste helft van de 10e eeuw werd gesticht door gravin Mumadona Dias. De huidige kerk werd in 1387 gebouwd in opdracht van koning D. João I, naar voorbeelden van gotische architectuur.
De kathedraal van Braga is een van de meest emblematische en historische monumenten in Portugal. Deze katholieke kathedraal, gelegen in de stad Braga, is een bewijs van de culturele en religieuze rijkdom van het land. De bouw ervan dateert uit het einde van de 11e eeuw en was heilig en opgedragen aan de Maagd Maria door bisschop D. Pedro in 10891. De kathedraal van Braga wordt beschouwd als de eerste Portugese kathedraal, gebouwd enkele decennia vóór de oprichting van de natie zelf.
Het heiligdom Bom Jesus do Monte is een juweel van religieuze architectuur en landschapsarchitectuur, gelegen in Braga. Met meer dan 600 jaar geschiedenis is dit christelijke bedevaartsoord een opmerkelijk voorbeeld van de Europese Sacri Monti, opgericht na het Concilie van Trente in de 16e eeuw. De Via Crucis van het heiligdom, die tegen de berghelling slingert, bestaat uit kapellen, fonteinen en sculpturen die de Passie van Christus vertegenwoordigen, met als hoogtepunt de neoklassieke kerk gebouwd tussen 1784 en 1811. De Trap van de Vijf Zintuigen, een barokwerk, is een van de meest emblematische elementen van het decor, die de menselijke zintuigen symboliseren door middel van fonteinen en standbeelden. Bom Jesus do Monte werd in 2019 door UNESCO erkend als werelderfgoed en viel op door zijn harmonieuze integratie met het natuurlijke landschap en zijn culturele en spirituele belang. Het heiligdom biedt een panoramisch uitzicht over Braga en is een bewijs van de religieuze traditie en invloed van de katholieke kerk in de regio.

The stop and sites were beautiful. Rick was a wonderful guide and explained the history of each stop. Small group was perfect. I don’t think it would be as enjoyable tour if it was a large group.

Our guide was Diana; although we had booked the tour in English, since we were all Spanish speakers, she made the effort to do it in Spanish. Everything she told us was very interesting, the history, the legends/traditions 😜 Very kind, she drove the van herself, and by the way, she drives very well, very carefully; she would drop us off at one point to take a tour and pick us up at another point, so we didn't have to walk back. The tour is 100% recommended and Diana is a fantastic guide. Thank you Diana

I sign up for English Braga and Guimares Medieval Tour. We got mix with a Portuguese couple not by choice which became a big problem. Diana our tour guide because they speak same Portuguese language our tour became a disaster. She spends most time with them, elaborate more on Portuguese than English.Diana became and serve as their private tour guide than the group tour guide. I was very disappointed with this tour. This tour should have been worth it but became not our moneys worth. It's a waste of our time

Ivo was a very personable and knowledgeable tour guide. Our tour occurred when the area was experiencing an extreme heat wave and we were traveling with an elderly family member. Ivo was able to adapt our tour to ensure my Mom got an excellent experience despite not being able to walk for long periods of time in the extreme heat.
