We wandelen door Little Greece of “Greektown”, waar het eten, de mensen, de kerken en de hele sfeer je het gevoel geven dat je door de straten van Griekenland loopt — niet door Queens. Binnen een paar stappen gaan we op weg naar “Klein Egypte” waar we langs verschillende Midden-Oosterse bedrijven lopen en gerechten uit de regio proeven. Inwoners uit verschillende Zuid- en Midden-Amerikaanse landen zijn ook vertegenwoordigd in Astoria, en ons voedselpallet profiteert optimaal. Astoria is een smeltkroes van smaken en culturen, en deze tour brengt je het beste van twee werelden. Onze eerste stop! Zeg kaas voor Pão de Queijo, oftewel traditioneel kaasbrood, dat drie kazen combineert: mozzarella, Zwitserse kaas en parmezaanse kaas. Zo delicaat en toch knapperig... je bedankt ons al en je bent nog niet op tournee geweest.
Astoria, op slechts een korte metrorit van Manhattan, is een levendige en unieke wijk in Queens. Het is een coole en aantrekkelijke plek, geroemd om zijn culturele diversiteit en zijn rijke aanbod aan heerlijke, eclectische voedselopties, van de authentieke Griekse keuken tot gerechten uit het Midden-Oosten. Mediterrane gerechten Je stapt bijna letterlijk Griekenland binnen door deze Griekse markt binnen te gaan voor een staaltje olijven en fetakaas. Opa!
De hoekplek Er zijn zoveel dingen om uit hun menu te kiezen (hun koffie behoort tot de beste in heel New York), maar voor ons is hun Spinazietaart een van de beste etenswaren in heel New York City. Deze heerlijke, hartige Griekse taart met filodeeg is spectaculair.
Arayes is een gegrilde pitabroodje gevuld met gehakt, uien, specerijen en kruiden, maar als je het zo zegt, klinkt het niet zo adembenemend als het is. Dit gerecht uit het Midden-Oosten is ongetwijfeld de scene-steel van deze tour en maakt al deel uit van je “vijfsterren”-recensie voor deze tour. Je weet het gewoon nog niet.
Een eetervaring hebben die je nog nooit eerder hebt gehad, is zeldzaam. Dat is waar Al-Sham's Knafeh in het spel komt. De kans is groot dat dit traditionele Arabische dessert, een gesponnen deeg gedrenkt in siroop en kaas, binnenkomt. Zoiets heb je nog nooit gehad. Deels dessert, deels pizza – alles.
Spiked ijsschreeuw FTW? Je weet het. We eindigen onze tour met een All American klassieker met een twist. Neem een shot dronken ijs met een kant van, hoe kan het ook anders, baklava. Niet-alcoholische smaken beschikbaar.

We had a great time with Ian touring Astoria. The food -- Greek, Brazilian, Palestinian, Colombian -- was so good and so varied. Ian was knowledgeable and made everything fun and easy. And the neighborhood is amazing. We visited a gorgeous Greek Orthodox church, enjoyed graffiti murals, and took selfies in front of George Costanza's parents' home. We left with satisfied appetites and a great appreciation for the hidden wonders of Astoria! Highly recommended.

This is our 5th tour with Nice Guys and the first on their Astoria tour…it was wonderful! The variety of food was great and as always, it was plentiful. Ian was fun and knowledgeable; he made us feel like his friends who he was just showing off the best of his neighborhood. Such a fun way to learn more about the unique areas of NYC. Make time to do a Nice Guys tour when you are visiting the city!

This was our 3rd time with Nice Guy Tours and certainly won't be our last! Ian was brilliant - excellent knowledge of the area and the history of Astoria, and more importantly for us, like Dante and Adam before him on previous tours, he was a really nice guy who made us all feel at ease. The name isn't just a gimmick! He was especially great and considerate about the extra needs of our youngest son who uses a wheelchair. Highlight for us were the arayes at Duzan and finishing off at The Tipsy Scoop for some ice cream! As always, we couldn't recommend these guys highly enough and we will definitely book again for the Lower East Side, which we haven't done yet but already looking forward to! Until next time! Emmeline was our tour guide and she walked us around Astoria giving us so much info on the neighborhood while we sampled amazing food. We were happy with the food samples and quite full at the end. All questions were answered and the tour was full of laughter and fun. Highly recommended if you would like to venture outside of Manhattan. Don't let the train ride intimidate you, it was super simple!

I hadn’t visited Astoria yet, so what better way to get to know a new neighborhood than a food tour. As far as I know, Nice Guys is the only company offering a food tour of Astoria. Having already done a tour with them (Lower East Side), booking this tour was an easy decision. The Astoria tour was a great introduction to foods and cuisines I had never tried before and I’m looking forward to having them again. If you’ve done the traditional NYC food tour already (pizza, bagel, etc.) and want something different, this is a great tour.
