De basiliek van Santa Maria degli Angeli ligt op 4 km van Assisi. Binnen in de basiliek bevindt zich de Porziuncola-kapel; de plaats die het meest geliefd was bij Sint Franciscus en waar God hem bijzondere genaden schonk. Aanvankelijk was de Porziuncola een oude kapel, omgeven door een klein stuk bos (vandaar misschien de naam) dat toebehoorde aan de benedictijnen van het klooster van S. Benedetto del Monte Subasio. Nadat het lange tijd verlaten was geweest, werd het gerestaureerd door Francesco, die het huurde van abt Teobaldo. Na de dood van de Sint verrezen rond de kerk enkele permanente gebouwen: het broederkoor, verschillende kleine oratoria en vervolgens een klein klooster. In de tweede helft van de 16e eeuw gaf Pius V opdracht tot de bouw van een grote basiliek die de Porziuncola zou omsluiten en beschermen en de menigten pelgrims zou verwelkomen die daar voortdurend naartoe stroomden.
De basiliek van Santa Chiara is een religieus gebouw, gebouwd in neoromaanse stijl, gelegen in Assisi. De basiliek is een van de beroemdste in Italië en een van de mooiste in Umbrië. De kerk markeert niet alleen het historische centrum van de stad, maar ook vanuit artistiek en cultureel oogpunt een belangrijke plaats. De basiliek van Santa Chiara werd gebouwd door de benedictijner monniken, die de wens hadden om Santa Chiara, geboren Agnese in 1194 en overleden op 13 september 1253, te eren. Momenteel worden er, samen met de Porziuncola, de Eremo delle Carceri, de Chiesa Nuova en de Basiliek van San Damiano, de kathedraal van San Rufino en uiteraard de basiliek van San Francesco, is een van de centra waar de pelgrimstocht naar Assisi geconcentreerd is.
Prachtige barokke residentie met gewelven met fresco's uit het begin van de zeventiende eeuw, ontworpen door Umbrische en Toscaanse schilders. Is de Pinacoteca Comunale di Assisi, binnenin bevinden zich een opvallende groep middeleeuwse en renaissancefresco's.
De basiliek van San Francesco d'Assisi, de plaats waar sinds 1230 de stoffelijke resten van de serafijnse heilige worden bewaard, is een van de belangrijkste gebedshuizen in Italië en de wereld. In 2000 werd de basiliek opgenomen op de UNESCO-werelderfgoedlijst. De eerste steen van de basiliek van Sint Franciscus van Assisi werd gelegd op 16 juli 1228, slechts twee dagen na de dood van Franciscus en de dag na zijn proclamatie als heilige door paus Gregorius IX. Volgens de overlevering was het Franciscus zelf die precies de plaats aangaf waar hij begraven wilde worden. De kerk vertegenwoordigt een van de hoekstenen van de verspreiding van de gotiek in Italië. Behalve dat het de begraafplaats van Sint Franciscus was, kreeg het van fundamenteel belang voor het pausdom, dat de Franciscaanse orde zag als een grote bondgenoot voor het versterken van de banden met de nederigste en meest populaire klassen. De bouw van de basiliek begon in 1228 door paus Gregorius IX en werd vervolgens in 1253 ingewijd door paus Innocentius IV.

Excellent! Tour assistant and driver were both very pleasant. On time departure. Beautiful drive. Tour guide Marco in Assisi was very thorough and excellent topic knowledge. Tour went long because he seemed to really enjoy what he does. Tour assistant pointed things out on the way, but also didn’t just talk at us the whole time. I cannot recommend the group at Welcome Italy enough for their day excursions. Cars are very clean and comfortable. We had paid for a small group tour but it ended up being only us which made the tour even more personal.

Welcome Italy was such a great way for my wife and I to experience a full trip in Rome. We actually had three separate excursions with them. First we went to Castel Gandolfo and Nemi. After a full three days in Rome, this was such a quiet and relaxing day. Antoinetta was so personable and made us feel at home, and our driver Pietro was great. The second day we traveled with Marie and Pino to Orvieto and Assisi. Again, both were professional and it felt like we were traveling with old friends by the end of the day. Our third day we traveled with Cascia and Spoleto. Another day of being immersed with a rich understanding of the history thanks to our guide, Juliana, and driver Flavio. Disclaimer here… my wife and I are Catholic, and from that perspective we felt so close to the history of the church. The guides did a great job of understanding that and catering to it each day. Their recommendations on restaurants while traveling were top notch as well. I cannot say enough good things about the days we spent with Welcome Italy and will absolutely be using their services on our next trip to Italy!
