De kathedraal van de heiligen Petrus en Donatus ligt op de heuvel van San Pietro, in het bovenste deel van de stad. We zullen dit geweldige gebouw, zijn geschiedenis en enkele curiosa ontdekken!
De Basiliek van San Domenico ligt aan het gelijknamige plein in Arezzo en is een van de belangrijkste heilige gebouwen in de stad. De bouw begon in 1275 en werd voltooid in de 14e eeuw, dankzij de financiering van de families Ubertini en Tarlati, de twee meest invloedrijke families tijdens de middeleeuwen in Arezzo. In januari 1276, hoewel nog onvolledig, was de kerk gastheer van wat wordt beschouwd als het eerste conclaaf in de geschiedenis van de katholieke kerk.
Het Casa Vasari Museum is een prachtige Renaissance residentie gelegen in het hart van Arezzo. Het werd persoonlijk aangekocht en ingericht door Giorgio Vasari, een beroemde schilder, architect en kunsthistoricus, vooral bekend om zijn fundamentele werk “The Lifes of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects”.
De Basiliek van San Francesco in Arezzo, met zijn onvoltooide gevel, herbergt een buitengewoon artistiek erfgoed. Onder de beroemdste werken valt de frescocyclus Het verhaal van het ware kruis van Piero della Francesca op, een universeel meesterwerk dat de Bacci-kapel versiert, in opdracht van de rijke Arezzo-familie die zijn naam kreeg.
Piazza Grande, gelegen in het historische centrum van Arezzo, is een iconische en fascinerende plek, bekend om zijn bijzondere trapeziumvorm en hellende vlak. Het plein dateert uit de 12e eeuw, maar onderging belangrijke transformaties in de 16e eeuw.
De Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta is een oude stedelijke doopkerk, waarvan de oorsprong teruggaat tot tussen de 5e en 6e eeuw, misschien gebouwd op de overblijfselen van een heidens gebouw. Later, rond de 9e eeuw, werd een groter bouwwerk gebouwd. In de 12e eeuw werd ook deze vroegmiddeleeuwse kerk afgebroken om plaats te maken voor een nieuw gebouw in Romaanse stijl.
Het Medici Fort van Arezzo, gelegen in het hart van het Prato Park, vertegenwoordigt een van de belangrijkste voorbeelden van Renaissance militaire architectuur in Toscane. De oorsprong van het fort gaat terug tot de middeleeuwen, toen het gebied al werd gebruikt als een strategisch punt voor de controle van het omliggende grondgebied.
Deze structuur, gebouwd tussen het einde van de 1e eeuw en de eerste helft van de 2e eeuw na Christus, weerspiegelt de Romeinse invloed op de stad, al erfgenaam van de Etruskische beschaving. Het amfitheater werd ontworpen om gladiatorenshows en openbare spelen te organiseren met een capaciteit van maximaal 10.000 toeschouwers. Laten we het verhaal ontdekken!

Everything was fine; it was comprehensive.
We were very happy in the end with the tour even though we thought we would be meeting at a certain spot and get headsets. We were able to maneuver through the tour using our own telephone and Link that was provided. It was very nice to do this at our own pace
I strongly recommend to skip this company and find a better provider. Yesterday we used a different company for our day at Assisi and loved the experience. Today we decided to do an audio guide at Arezzo. Never again with this company. The narration was annoying with unnecessary background music. Ok. What really bothered us was: The webpage interface sucked. We could not scroll up to see the map or we would be kicked out, so that was a lot of wasted time. But the worst was that the guide sent you all over the place. Have a 2 minute summary of a place, most of them places you mérito pay to get in. No, I did not expect to be able to get in for free everywhere. But I think it was a waste of my time to walk all over the place just to see the outside of buildings. So I do not recommend this tour. There are better versions with better interface and better itineraries.
Hello, we’re sorry you didn’t like the guide. We find it a bit odd, actually, because… you also used our Assisi guide and you liked that one 😅! That one also had background music and the interface was exactly the same, so it’s really hard for us to respond to this review 🙂. I found myself very well, easy and intuitive to use, synthetic. I would buy it again if I had to do another day trip.
We learned & discovered so many fun historical facts by doing this walking tour. We also took the mini train, but we learned more walking on foot.
The audio tour was one of the highlights of our long weekend in Arezzo. Start at the Cathedral of Arezzo. Good explanation with a sense of humor. Good to listen to. The tour is like a puzzle tour, very fun to do. From birthplace, to beautiful square to fortified fortress, within 3 hours you are much wiser with beautiful background info. Matteo thanks
I think the guide included 7 key places around Arezzo but (with 4 kids in tow) it was really handy that we could dip in and out and pick and choose which ones to focus on and when. The information on each place was very informative but not too long and it was really useful to have the choice of listening and/or reading. We didn't manage to follow the route suggested but it looked really well thought out and logically planned. Considering how much information was included, and the useful map, I was impressed at the price and would definitely consider using this again.
Positive experience, the tour to Arezzo really interesting. The clear and exhaustive explanations. Tomorrow we will be in Siena and I plan to take the audlguida there too. Recommended
