Matera is een van de oudste steden ter wereld, met sporen van menselijke nederzettingen die teruggaan tot het Paleolithicum en die tot op de dag van vandaag ononderbroken voortduren. Het vertegenwoordigt een buitengewone bladzijde die door de mens in de loop van de millennia van deze zeer lange geschiedenis is geschreven. Werelderfgoed sinds 1993 en Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa in 2019. Met de klassieke en typische Ape Calessino (tuk tuk), een Italiaans legende die erg geliefd is bij gezinnen, vooral met kinderen in kinderwagens, doorkruisen we het historische centrum en de Sassi. Wandelen kan erg vermoeiend zijn, vooral in de zomer. We razen door de karakteristieke straatjes en steegjes, maken korte stops om foto's en video's te maken en om kerken op de pleinen en karakteristieke grotwoningen (museumhuizen) te bezoeken.

We had a great time on the Ape Calessino Tour of the Sassi di Matera. It was such a fun and unique experience riding through the narrow streets. The tour is well-paced and covers the main highlights of the Sassi, with interesting information along the way. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, making the whole experience both enjoyable and informative. For all we were in Matera for 3 nights, this tour would be ideal if you’re only there for a short period of time, as it gives you a great overview without feeling rushed. Maybe not the best value for money for a 45 minute experience however, still highly recommended.

Antonio was very helpful and knowledgeable, an excellent tour for our first time in Matera, as a general visit. He stops several times at strategic viewpoints. Next time, we definitely need to take a different tour to enter the Sassi. The only thing, perhaps for the price of 35 euros each, we were four, the 50 minutes could be extended. Anyway, you get an excellent view of both the old and new city.

What a beautiful tour! Our guide Eustachio did not tire us; he was able to explain all the essentials to pique our curiosity, enhance our knowledge, but without boring us. The idea of visiting a typical house in the stones to truly understand the living conditions until a few decades ago is beautiful. Highly recommended!!

This tour only makes sense if you do it right upon arrival in Matera... we were already there a day earlier and had expected more; the driver Antonio was very friendly and nice... We did not like that they stop at "souvenir shops" along the way....
Buongiorno. Mi spiace contraddirla, ma la sosta effettuata, che Lei indica come negozio di souvenir.... (l' unica del genere) , è stata effettuata per vedere un' opera d'arte e cioè i "Sassi in miniatura" , esposta in un'antica cisterna , fatta negli anni '90 , da un artigiano Materano a mano, con la pietra locale, "calcarenite" , chiamata in gergo tufo . È un' opera d'arte visitata da migliaia di turisti e molto apprezzata , che voi sicuramente non avevate visto, nonostante eravate a Matera dal giorno prima.... Peccato quindi che la vostra diffidenza.... vi abbia fatto fermare all' ingresso dell' attività, senza addentrarvi come vi ho consigliato, per ammirare l'opera. La prossima volta cercate di fidarvi un po' di più delle persone del posto. Grazie.
