De tour begint met een korte introductie in de geschiedenis van Utah en zijn unieke natuurlijke omgeving. Naarmate de zon lager wordt en de kleuren warmer worden, voelt zelfs de rit als een klein avontuur, waarbij het panorama van Antelope Island langzaam voor ons verschijnt.
Antelope Island — het grootste eiland van het Great Salt Lake — verwelkomt bezoekers met dramatische geologie, wijd open landschappen en een uniek rijk ecosysteem. Van hieruit ontvouwt zich onze verkenning van het eiland.
Onze eerste stop onthult de geboorteplaats van de unieke pekelgarnalenindustrie van het eiland. Deze kleine wezens – die gedijen in water dat zouter is dan de oceaan – vormen de basis van het leven in het Grote Zoutmeer. Hun ongelooflijke vermogen om te overleven in zulke extreme omstandigheden heeft hen zowel een ecologische schat als een belangrijke economische hulpbron voor Utah gemaakt.
Een korte wandeling brengt ons naar de Lady Finger Trail Overlook, waar de schoonheid van het eiland zich in volle zicht opent. Terwijl de middagzon de lucht verzacht, glinstert het Great Salt Lake als glas, schijnbaar smeltend in de horizon — een verbluffende en onvergetelijke introductie tot Antelope Island.

Om de tour af te sluiten, bezoeken we Buffalo Point Overlook, waar je meer te weten komt over de geologie van het eiland en de oorsprong van het Great Salt Lake - een overblijfsel van het prehistorische Lake Bonneville dat ooit een groot deel van westelijk Utah bedekte. Voor gasten die geïnteresseerd zijn in lichte activiteit, bieden we een gemakkelijke wandeling van 25 minuten langs een wandelpad van 5.300 voet (1,6 km) met een geleidelijke stijging van 66-67 m. Vanaf de top opent zich een weids panorama over het glinsterende meer, verre bergketens en rustige eilandlandschappen. Dit is de perfecte plek om de zonsondergang te ervaren - beschouwd als een van de meest spectaculaire in heel Utah. Als de zon de horizon ontmoet, vult de lucht zich met warme tinten goud en rood, en het meer weerspiegelt de veranderende kleuren. The Antelope Island Sunset tour was the best part of our Salt Lake City vacation. We were picked up at our hotel in a comfortable sprinter van. Cold water and (allergy friendly) snacks were offered throughout the tour. Dima shared a lot of history and facts about Utah and the local area. He was funny and engaging and worked hard to make sure everyone enjoyed the tour. He even went searching through the trees to find a porcupine for us to look at! The views were breathtaking- exactly the kind of sights you come to SLC for. We saw bison, antelope, birds, and a bunny. It was a nice combination of riding in air conditioning and getting out to walk or hike. The sunset view was so beautiful! We were dropped off at our hotel at the end and slept like logs. Would do this tour again in a heartbeat.

Dima shared fascinating tidbits about famous movies shot in the area, like Westworld, Independence Day, and even Indian Jones. We had no idea Utah was such a versatile hub for film production, with its storied history dating back to 1923 with The Covered Wagon. Dima kept the atmosphere lighthearted and engaging, incorporating video footage on his tablet that shed additional light on the region’s rich cultural heritage, including its Native American history, pioneer stories, and the influence of Mormons. This unique private tour truly proided our group of four with a deeper appreiation for the stunning beauty and significance of Antelope Island and the Great Salt Lake. My boys and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Antelope Island with Dima from Matei Travel. The tour was amazing. We saw lots of wildlife close up and beautiful scenery. The Antelope Island Sunset Great Salt Lake Tour was a fun and adventurous tour. Our tour guide, Dimo was very knowledgeable and entertaining. He is definitely the porcupine hunter, so if you take this tour be ready to go on the hunt for some porcupine on the Island. I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone who is just visiting Utah for the first time. It's fun and educational!
Our guide Dima of Matei Travel was superb and gave us a delightful adventure. He enthusiastically shared his knowledge of the Park, the history, the best spots to explore and his humor and kindness (and yummy snacks + water!) made for a special day. He even helped me climb a challenging trail so I could watch a beautiful Sunset on the Great Salt Lake. An incredible experience and warm memory. This is a must do for travelers. Guide, Dima, was superb! He took us everywhere on the island optimizing our wildlife encounters and views. Later, when the sunset was getting ready to happen, he escorted us to the best site and was always on hand to make sure we safely made it to the top of the ridge to see the incredible view.
I did both national park trips with Matei Travel: Antelope Island State Park and the Bonneville Salt Flats. Dima (our guide) was amazing. He picked everyone up directly from our hotels, knew exactly where to go and at what time, and was very attentive in ensuring everyone could safely and comfortably climb, hike, and do everything needed to get the best views. He actively searched for wildlife on the island, and we were able to see brown horned, bison, owls, porcupines, and more. He also took pictures for everyone who wanted them. The whole experience was fantastic! He knows a lot about the history of Utah, Salt Lake City, and the surrounding region. He shared a lot of interesting information about the places we visited, the history of the city, and the local wildlife. He also provided free snacks and water, was very open and happy to answer questions, and always made sure to let us know when it was the last restroom stop and how long it would be until the next one hahaha.
