De architectuur en indeling van de opeenvolgende hoofdsteden getuigen van een hoog niveau van sociale orde en rangorde binnen het Khmer-rijk. Angkor is daarom een belangrijke site die een voorbeeld is van culturele, religieuze en symbolische waarden, maar ook een hoge architectonische, archeologische en artistieke betekenis heeft.
Angkor Thom, letterlijk: “Grote Stad”, bevat een aantal van de must-see tempels en oude locaties, waaronder de Bayon-tempel, het Terras van de Olifanten, het Terras van de Leprakoning, de Baphoun-tempel en nog veel meer. Het is een must-bezoek tijdens een reis naar Siem Reap en zijn oude tempels.
Het meest onderscheidende kenmerk van de Bayon is de veelheid aan serene en glimlachende stenen gezichten van de Boeddha - waarschijnlijk gemodelleerd naar het gezicht van koning Jayavarman VII - aan elke kant de vele torens die uitsteken vanaf het bovenste terras en zich rond de centrale top groeperen.
Baphuon van Udayadityavarman II (regeerde 1050-1066); en de boeddhistische tempel van Bayon, de centrale tempel die door Jayavarman VII werd gebouwd toen hij de stad, die later bekend werd als Angkor Thom, of ‘Grote Stad’, haar min of meer definitieve vorm gaf.
De Ta Nei-tempel is een zeer kleine en zelden bezochte tempel. Het gebrek aan andere bezoekers is een van de vele redenen waarom je deze geweldige tempel zou moeten bezoeken.
Ta Prohm, gebouwd in 1186 en oorspronkelijk bekend als Rajavihara (klooster van de koning), was een boeddhistische tempel gewijd aan de moeder van Jayavarman VII. Het is een van de weinige tempels in de Angkor-regio waar een inscriptie informatie geeft over de personen en inwoners van de tempel.
Banteay Kdei, een enorm boeddhistisch klooster uit het laatste deel van de 12e eeuw, is omgeven door vier concentrische muren. Elk van de vier ingangen is versierd met garuda's, die een van de favoriete thema's van Jayavarman VII naar voren brengen: de vier gezichten van Avalokiteshvara.
De Prasat Kravan-tempel is een hindoetempel uit de 10e eeuw gewijd aan VIshnu. Het is een relatief kleine tempel vergeleken met andere tempels in het park.

Good trip, but could be better described that the guide was not with into the temple, so had to hire a new guide inside. Would have been cheaper to rent tuktuk from the hotel

Soppal and Titiya were great guys and took us where we wanted to go. The temples close at 6pm beware of that! But after 5:40 is free Make sure you cover knees and shoulders or you can’t go in

Great tuktuk transportation through Angkor Wat. Sophal was very well prepared with towels and lots of water. He recommended a tour guide for $60 but I opted to do my own self paced tour with an audio guide and had an amazing time. Definitely need to book transportation between temples as it is quite a walk between them. Highly recommend this one as it was very accommodating, didn’t rush me and let me take it at my own pace which I really appreciated.
