The perfect tour - history + herring and fries

Todd was a great guide - he read our interests really well. He gave us a perfect (for us) blend of the history of Amsterdam, physical layout of the historical center and tasty snacks folded into it all, most of which we wouldn't have known to try.

Not worth it!

Our guide Todd was great! The Tour company set this tour up Very Poorly! They advertised a full meal! It is Not! And no Herring. We went to a cheese store, thinking we would have a private tasting of the different cheeses and sauces they offered there, but it was the same tasting that was already set up for any of the public to come in and taste! No plates, no napkins….tiny, tiny, tiny bits of cheese and little tiny bits of broken hard bread to taste the sauces. Then we went to a french fry stand and stood in the hot sun and waited for our french fries and the different sauces which were actually delicious . Our guide was super nice and tried to make the most of it and found us a place to sit but it was in the hot sun. One frites for two people. Then a hot bakery for a fresh stroopwafels. There were no drinks except for the water bottles the guide provided. The last stop was bitterballens and a slice of Apple pie and a beer, wine or soft drink. I don’t call that a meal. We walked very far to each place. The food was all good. But not worth the money we paid! We have been on many food tours all over the world, and this was by far the worst one. Todd was great but the company he works for obviously doesn’t care for the customers.

Not worth the money

I hate to be the only "negative" review, but this food tour was unfortunately underwhelming. We were changed to a different date last minute from the date we had reserved. No problem, we were willing to be flexible. There were six of us in our family--my husband and myself and our four teenagers. There was also another lady who joined our group. For the amount of money we spent--about $550--I expected to not be starving at the end of the tour. Our first stop was a cheese tasting, which was quite good but please note the samples are quite small. Next, we got some fries and I must admit that we tried different sauces than I ever would have selected on our own so this was a benefit to having a guide. However, my husband tried to get in line to order more for himself but was told there would be plenty. Reader, there was not plenty. Our guide also did not buy waters for each person. We are a family, so I guess it is okay to share but that was a bit odd. Next we went to a place for stroopwaffels. The pictures they show prominently advertising the tour show the beautiful dipped stroopwaffels with toppings added. I incorrectly assumed those would be the type of stroopwaffels we would be served. Instead, we were given plain stroopwaffels. Yes, they were delicious, but that was not the expectation I had from the tour photographs. Our final stop was at a pub. We were given the option to order alcohol, but we just ordered sodas with our children. We were served a slice of dutch apple pie and one savory dish called bitter balls. They were both delicious, but at the end of the tour, we had basically eaten an ounce of cheese, two desserts, a handful of French fries and a fried savory ball. Our family had to go to a restaurant after to order actual dinner. Our guide was kind and informative. I won't list his name since I haven't been the most positive. We tried giving him a tip in US dollars and he didn't want to take it (although he is an American and clearly travels to the US as he told us he just flew in from NYC that morning). We should have just kept it.

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We appreciate that you were flexible with the schedule change and that you recognized your guide’s kindness and knowledge during the experience. We’re sorry to hear that the tour did not meet your expectations, particularly regarding the quantity of food provided. We would like to clarify that our tours are ordinarily considered a full meal experience, with a selection of tastings designed to provide guests with a satisfying introduction to local food culture. Based on your comments, we will carefully analyze what happened during this specific tour to understand why your experience did not reflect the standard we aim to provide. We also appreciate your feedback regarding the stroopwafel presentation and the expectations created by the tour images. We understand how important it is that the experience matches what guests anticipate when booking, and we will review this aspect as well. The tour price includes not only the food and beverages but also the expertise of a local guide, the planning and organization behind the experience, and the coordination with our partner venues. We value your comments and will use them to continue improving the quality and consistency of our tours. Thank you again for sharing your experience, and we hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a more satisfying culinary experience in the future.

Great Food and Culture tour with Todd

We had an incredible food tour in Amsterdam with our guide, Todd, who is originally from Wisconsin and has lived in the city for 13 years. His deep knowledge of both Dutch culture and American perspective made the experience especially engaging and easy to understand. Our tour began with a walk through the vibrant flower market, followed by a stop at Henri Willig for some outstanding cheese. From there, we sampled a classic Dutch specialty—herring—which Todd explained in a way that made it approachable even for first-timers. We also enjoyed traditional Dutch fries with a variety of sauces, which were absolutely delicious. One of the highlights was Melly’s Stroopwafels, served warm right out of the oven—easily a favorite moment of the tour. We wrapped up the experience at a cozy local pub, which was the perfect ending. Throughout the tour, Todd pointed out key landmarks, shared fascinating insights, and patiently answered all of our questions. He also made sure to stop frequently for photos, which we really appreciated. His ability to interpret cultural nuances from a fellow American perspective made everything more meaningful and easy to follow. I would highly recommend this food tour with Todd—it was a perfect blend of great food, local history, and excellent company.

What are the most important things we learned was the walking, biking, car, and tram etiquette so we didn’t get run over, ha ha . I would highly recommend this food tour with Todd—it was a perfect blend of great food, local history, and excellent company.
