De Atomic Bomb Dome is een gebouw dat tijdens de laatste fase van de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd gebombardeerd met het allereerste kernwapen. Het staat er bijna precies zo als toen het werd gebombardeerd en dient als een aangrijpende herinnering aan de verwoesting veroorzaakt door kernwapens en pleit voor de afschaffing van dergelijke wapens en het belang van mondiale vrede. Geregistreerd als UNESCO-werelderfgoed in december 1996, na pogingen om de nominatie te verkrijgen, werd het in juni 1995 door de Japanse regering aangewezen als nationale historische plek.
Het Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum werd in 1955 opgericht met als doel de realiteit van de schade veroorzaakt door de atoombom over te brengen aan mensen over de hele wereld en bij te dragen aan de afschaffing van kernwapens en de realisatie van eeuwige wereldvrede, wat de kernwaarden zijn van Hiroshima. Op 6 augustus 1945 om 08.15 uur werd Hiroshima de eerste stad ter wereld die werd getroffen door de verwoesting van een atoombom. De stad werd grotendeels verwoest en er gingen veel levens verloren. Zelfs degenen die het overleefden, leden aan aanzienlijke fysieke en psychologische trauma’s, en veel overlevenden lijden tot op de dag van vandaag nog steeds. Het Peace Memorial Museum verzamelt en exposeert artefacten van overlevenden, evenals foto's en documenten die de verwoesting weergeven die door het bombardement is veroorzaakt. Het biedt ook informatie over de geschiedenis van Hiroshima voor en na het bombardement en de stand van zaken tijdens het nucleaire tijdperk.

Our guide’s name was Masa. I can’t say enough good things about her. I booked our tour months before and she immediately reached out me. She offered to meet us at the port which was very helpful and knew the order to visit the sites to minimize wait times. She was very accommodating on the pace of our tour and when to stop and rest. Her English was superb. I recommend her to anyone that really wants to learn about Hiroshima especially about the city during WWII. By the time our tour ended I felt like I had met a new friend. We loved this tour! Yoshiko was our guide and she was fantastic. She told us a lot of history of Hiroshima and was very enthusiastic and personable. There is a lot of walking (as per the title) so be prepared for this however there are a lot of interesting things to see. Would recommend.

Perfect walking tour to see top places in Hiroshima. Started at Peace Memorial, then walked to Hiroshima Castle and ended at the beautiful Gardens. Our tour guide Yuki was knowledgable and flexible. Our taxi driver from the cruise port dropped us off at the wrong location and Yuki was so kind to come meet us at the Peace Memorial and started from there. I highly recommend this tour as we saw it all and had time to get back to the ship.

Wonderful day spent with Masa for the walking tour. Masa met us at the train station and led us to all of the listed sights. She provided commentary along the way, including much sbout the culture. Masa’s English is good and she is a thoughtful guide. We happened to visit on the 80th anniversary of the bombing, so the site was full of attendees and dignitaries. Masa explained how this day is celebrated and worked around the crowds. I highly recommend this tour and Masa.
