Sarnath is een klein stadje in de buurt van Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India. Sarnath ligt op een afstand van 10 km van Varanasi en is gemakkelijk bereikbaar met elk vervoermiddel. Dit is een van de heiligste boeddhistische plekken ter wereld, Sarnath staat bekend als de plaats waar Gautama Boeddha zijn eerste preek hield. Sarnath was een gerenommeerde leerschool van de 6e eeuw voor Christus tot de 12e eeuw na Christus. Bezoek de ruïnes, de stoepa, de boeddhistische tempel en het museum. In het museum staat de Ashok-pilaar met zijn vier beschermleeuwen, gebruikt als het onafhankelijke nationale embleem van India. De boeddhistische tempel Mulagandhakuti Vihara in Sarnath is een van de tempels die in 1931 door de Sri Lankan Mahabodhi Society werd gebouwd. Het is de plaats waar Heer Boeddha zijn eerste regenseizoen had doorgebracht. De muren van deze tempel hebben prachtige fresco's die het leven van de Boeddha uitbeelden. Het is de meest heilige plaats voor de mensen van de boeddhistische religie, aangezien Heer Boeddha hier onder de boom zijn verlichting had bereikt. Dhamekh Stupa is de plaats waar Heer Boeddha zijn eerste gesprek over Dharma had gegeven.

Such an amazing tour! The tour guide was informative, funny, and considerate (always choosing shade when it was 43 degrees outside). He was so easy to understand and told everything in a clear and memorable way. For me, it was really special to hear the story of Buddhism in the country it was founded - despite it being less observed in the country today.

Brilliant guided walk around Sarnath. Our guide was able to explain the complexity of Buddism, very clearly and succinctly, he was relaxed and humorous and made the walk seem like 5 minutes. He was very knowledgeable about the subject and happy to discuss any subject relating to Indian culture and beliefs. I would highly recommend the company.
