Chiang Mai Temples & Doi Suthep: A Full-Day Itinerary

Chiang Mai has more than 300 temples, but a well-planned day pairs the golden mountain shrine of Doi Suthep with the ancient wats of the walled Old City. Here is how to see the best temples in one day — from a monk chat to the hilltop views — with the top-rated guided tours to book.

At a glance

  1. 1Wat Chedi Luang & Wat Phra Singh
  2. 2Monk chat in the Old City
  3. 3Climb to Doi Suthep
  4. 4Sunset over the city

Start in the walled Old City

Begin inside the moat with the two headline temples. Wat Chedi Luang is built around a huge 14th-century brick stupa, part-toppled by a 1545 earthquake and still commanding. A few blocks away, Wat Phra Singh gleams with gold and teak and holds one of Chiang Mai's most revered Buddha images. Entry is a symbolic ฿20–฿50 each; dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered.

Have a monk chat

Several Old City temples run 'monk chats' — informal sessions where novice monks practise their English and answer questions about Buddhism and daily monastery life. Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Suan Dok are the best known and they're free, with a donation appreciated. A guided temple-and-meditation walk led by a former monk is the easiest way to line up a genuine conversation rather than a rushed photo stop.

Climb to Doi Suthep

Save the afternoon for Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the golden hilltop temple 15 km above the city. Climb the 306-step naga staircase (or take the funicular) to the glittering chedi and terrace views over Chiang Mai. Combine it with the forest temple Wat Pha Lat on the monk's trail. Aim for late afternoon to catch the light — sunset from the terrace is the classic finish to a temple day.

Beyond the city: white and blue temples

If you have a second day, the surreal white temple (Wat Rong Khun) and sapphire-blue temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) near Chiang Rai make a spectacular full-day trip about three hours north. Many tours bundle both with the Black House and lunch. It's a long day but the photogenic modern temples are a striking contrast to Chiang Mai's centuries-old wats.
