Fu qui che visse e predicò Martin Lutero e il 31 ottobre 1517 inchiodò le sue 95 tesi alla porta della chiesa del castello. La Riforma protestante era iniziata. A volte chiamata la "Roma dei protestanti", molti siti commemorativi di Lutero furono aggiunti alla lista del patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO nel 1996.

Ammira la Residenza di Lutero, un grande chiostro che il riformatore Martin Lutero usava come casa. Visita la piazza del mercato di Wittenberg, dominata dal municipio e dalle torri della chiesa cittadina. Dai un'occhiata al Lutero Memorial. Dietro il mercato c'è una vecchia chiesa chiamata Stadtkirche, dove Lutero predicò e sposò Katharina von Bora. Passa davanti alla Castle Church, la famosa chiesa in cui Martin Lutero affisse alla porta le sue 95 tesi. Lutero ha tenuto alcuni dei suoi sermoni in questa chiesa e ora è sepolto proprio sotto il pulpito. Un altro punto di riferimento importante è la Quercia di Lutero, dove nel 1520 i sostenitori di Lutero bruciarono una pila di scritti della dottrina della Chiesa. Nel 1830 fu piantata una quercia nel luogo in cui sarebbe avvenuto tutto questo. Concludiamo il nostro tour con l'Università di Wittenberg, dove è ancora possibile vedere parti della struttura risalenti al XVI secolo. Lo stesso Lutero lavorò tra queste mura e le sue citazioni sono esposte sulle pareti dell'atrio.

I knew nothing about Wittenberg and come to find out it is mainly one street. But, that one street has so much history. It is a walking tour so be prepared, but each stop is a new adventure into the history of Lutheranism and of the town. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and was able to answer all of our questions. This tour is worth the price if you are a history buff like I am. You will not be disappointed.
