La bellezza eterna dei mosaici di alcuni dei più famosi monumenti Unesco di Ravenna, in un percorso di visita che a partire da Piazza San Francesco, si snoderà lungo le vie del centro storico.

venne costruito intorno alla metà del V sec, per volere di Galla Placidia, che resse l'Impero Romano d'Occidente. Questo piccolo mausoleo a croce latina, esternamente è molto semplice, mentre all'interno presenta una ricca decorazione musiva. Le innumerevoli stelle della cupola hanno colpito nel corso dei secoli la fantasia e la sensibilità dei visitatori, e di personalità di eccellenza come il sommo Poeta Dante Alighieri, che ne trasse ispirazione per la stesura di alcuni versi della Divina Commedia.
è uno dei monumenti più importanti dell'arte paleocristiana in Italia. Il monumento è del VI secolo, di chiara influenza orientale, presenta una pianta ottagonale, sormontata da una grande cupola affrescata. Quando si entra nella basilica, lo sguardo viene catturato dagli alti spazi, dalle stupende decorazioni musive dell'abside, e dalla straordinaria rappresentazione della coppia imperiale di Bisanzio, Giustiniano e Teodora, con i loro cortei.
uno dei monumenti più antichi della città, in semplice laterizio all'esterno ma ricco di marmi, stucchi e mosaici di chiara influenza ellenistico-romana all'interno. A dominare la cupola, commissionata dal Vescovo Neone alla metà del V secolo, la scena del Battesimo di Cristo circondata da una raffinatissima processione dei dodici Apostoli che si staglia su un fondo brillante di tessere blu. All'interno è ancora presente il fonte battesimale di epoca rinascimentale, che riprende la forma ottogonale della pianta del Battistero e che conserva l'ambone del V secolo.

In July at 14:45 it can be a bit hot :) So be sure to take your water and your hat. Respect to the guide who talked abd walked us through the heat.
Excellent tour with an amazing tour guide. All taken at good leisurely pace and in walking distance. Tour size was fine also. Tour guide was more than knowledgeable and offered time for those with questions. Would highly recommend.

So much beauty deserves to treat oneself to a tour with one of the expert guides from VisitRavenna. The added value of the guide: the various sites are scattered throughout the city, and our guide accompanied us from one place to another, helping us discover other gems of Ravenna :) Considering the summer heat, we would have chosen the 3-hour visit if it had been possible to do it in the morning.

My partner and I opted (on the advice of the tourist information office in Ravenna) to take the complete tour of the 5 monuments managed by the diocese (San Vitale, Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Neoniano Baptistery). The tour is very well organized and allows you to visit all 5 monuments internally. The guide (Elisa) was thorough and provided many insights about the city! She took us to visit the crypt of the Church of San Francesco and the chair of Maximian. The only negative organizational note: the 8 UNESCO sites are scattered from an organizational standpoint, and it would be worth having a single management of this wonderful heritage; moreover, this tour is less advertised than it should be! I recommend including it on platforms like GetYourGuide, because it deserves it!
