Il Canal Grande è il principale corso d'acqua di Venezia (lungo circa 4 km). Il Canal Grande ha una forma a "S" rovesciata e divide la città in due parti, ognuna delle quali raggruppa tre quartieri. La larghezza del Canal Grande varia da 30 a 70 metri e la sua profondità massima è di 5 metri. Il Canal Grande è attraversato da quattro ponti, il più antico è quello di Rialto (1591). Gli altri tre ponti sul Canal Grande sono quelli degli Scalzi, dell'Accademia e infine il Ponte della Costituzione, quest'ultimo progettato dall'architetto Calatrava (inaugurazione 11 settembre 2008). Il Ponte di Rialto è il più antico dei quattro ponti del Canal Grande. È famoso sia per la sua architettura che per la sua storia. Per anni fu il fulcro dell'economia veneziana. Il nome "Rialto" deriva da "Rivus altus", che in italiano significa "canale profondo", ad indicare che si tratta di una zona esente da inondazioni. La struttura del ponte è simile ai precedenti, crollati due volte e incendiati in varie occasioni, ed è costituita da due rampe inclinate unite da un portico al centro. Attraversando il Ponte di Rialto raggiungerai il Mercato di Rialto, un luogo colorato dove vengono vendute frutta e verdura. Il Mercato ha origini antichissime e si tiene in questo luogo fin dal 1097.
San Marco è una delle piazze più affascinanti del mondo, tanto che Napoleone Bonaparte la definì "la sala più bella d'Europa". Fu costruita nel IX secolo e pavimentata nel 1177, 100 anni dopo la sua costruzione. Piazza San Marco è la zona più bassa di Venezia e, quindi, è la prima zona ad allagare con l'acqua alta. In questi casi, il comune di Venezia installa passerelle per consentire il regolare transito dei pedoni. Se siete fortunati (o sfortunati, a seconda dei vostri gusti), potrete vedere la piazza piena d’acqua. Gli edifici più importanti della piazza sono la Basilica di San Marco, il Palazzo Ducale, il Museo Correr, il Campanile e la Torre dell'Orologio.
Originariamente questo edificio doveva essere un'estensione di Palazzo Ducale. La prima costruzione della Basilica di San Marco iniziò nell'anno 828 e terminò nell'anno 832 per ospitare il corpo dell'apostolo San Marco portato da Alessandria come protettore della città. La costruzione dell'attuale basilica iniziò nel 1063 in stile bizantino per rappresentare il potere della prospera Repubblica Veneta. Questa basilica è stata costruita rispettando il modello di due basiliche dell'antica città imperiale di Bisanzio con una pianta centrale a forma di croce greca, cinque grandi cupole e una particolare miscela di arte antica e orientale. Il risultato è una splendida e riuscita combinazione di stili.
Il Palazzo Ducale venne edificato probabilmente tra il X e l'XI secolo sulla base di un nucleo centrale fortificato. La prima ristrutturazione fu effettuata nel XII secolo con il Doge Sebastiano Ziani che trasformò la fortezza in un elegante palazzo. Tra il 1339 e il 1342, durante il regno di Bartolomeo Gradenigo, il palazzo cominciò ad assumere la forma attuale. Il doge Francesco Foscari ampliò il palazzo nel 1424 fino a raggiungere la Basilica di San Marco. All'inizio del XVII secolo l'architetto Antonio Contin aggiunse le Prigioni Nuove attraverso il canale, collegandole al palazzo con il Ponte dei Sospiri, dove passavano i detenuti diretti alle nuove prigioni. Nel 1797, dopo la caduta della Repubblica di Venezia, il palazzo fu adattato ad ospitare gli uffici amministrativi.
Il Campanile di San Marco è uno dei simboli della città di Venezia. I veneziani lo chiamano affettuosamente "El parón DE casa". Con i suoi 98,6 metri di altezza, è uno dei campanili più alti d'Italia. Si erge maestoso in Piazza San Marco di fronte alla basilica. Di forma semplice, è costituito da una canna scanalata in mattoni, avente un lato di 12 metri e alta circa 50 metri, sopra la quale si trova il campanile ad arco. Il campanile è a sua volta sormontato da un dado, sulle cui facce sono alternativamente raffigurati due leoni camminanti e le figure femminili di Venezia (Giustizia). Completa il tutto la guglia a forma di piramide, sulla cui sommità, montata su una piattaforma rotante che funge da banderuola, si trova la statua dorata dell’arcangelo Gabriele. La base dell'edificio è impreziosita, sul lato rivolto verso la basilica, dalla Loggia del Sansovino.
Il Ponte dei Sospiri si trova nel centro storico di Venezia, proprio dietro Piazza San Marco, è l'unico ponte della città completamente chiuso. Oggi è conosciuto anche come il “ponte degli innamorati”: la leggenda narra che per dichiararsi amore eterno bisogna baciarsi sotto il ponte durante un giro in gondola. La vera storia del Ponte, però, è ben diversa: il fatto che collegasse il Palazzo Ducale e il Palazzo delle Prigioni non è un caso! Serviva infatti come passaggio di sicurezza per spostare i detenuti dal Tribunale alle Carceri e viceversa.

Our guide was super friendly, experienced and knowledgeable. We had the most perfect day. Then after drop off I received a text over WhatsApp that he was very upset that he was not tipped by us and that the amount he was paid by his company was insignificant. (80 euros) I was very surprised as we paid over 1300.00 US dollars for the tour and bought him lunch. Up until the moment of that text it was an amazing day.

Wow! This trip was perfect for us. Our tour picked us up at the hotel and we went business class on a high speed train to Venice. We saw everything on the tour and I had asked to see a few specific things not on the itinerary. They looked up the places and helped us make choices and adjustments that made us even more delighted. Juliana was a great tour guide. Even though it rained the day we were in Venice, she showed us St. Mark’s Cathedral, and we went on a gondola ride, And we saw Rialto Bridge and walked across it. We saw the Bridge of Sighs. The train ride was smooth and it was fun seeing the Italian countryside.

The guide (Monica) provided just the kind of personal service we were looking for! Our first goal was to get a general feel for Venice and the tour delivered. Our second goal was to see St Mark’s Basilica and that didn’t happen. There was an issue with the ticket process that embarrassed both us and our guide and prevented us from entering. The company provided quick tix to the bell tower as a consolation. If you book with this tour be sure and confirm your St Mark’s tickets are valid before you travel.

This tour was excellent. We took the train to Venice. We had time to explore, eat, go to famous cathedrals, sites like bridge of sighs and take a gondola ride. It was like I had always imagined but better. Our tour guide went above and beyond. We did not wait for any activity we even had time for a street side artist to paint a portrait. It was an amazing city and an amazing excursion.

The private tour to Venice was exceptional. Our guide Serevino was amazing and very patient with my elderly mother who has trouble with stairs. He offered her assistance on more than one occasion. Our driver, forgot his name, was also very kind and polite. Overall great experience and absolutely stunning to travel to Venice and explore at the pace of my elderly mother who’s dream was to visit Venice.
