Benvenuti nella piazza sul mare aperto più grande d’Europa (12280 metri quadrati!). La piazza è così bella che varrebbe la pena di venire a Trieste anche solo per vederla. Ma tante altre attrazioni ci aspettano!
Antica porta romana risalente probabilmente al I secolo d.C., si apriva nelle antiche mura della Tergeste romana, costruite da Augusto nel 33 a.C.
Questo sorge sulla sommità del colle omonimo, che già era l'acropoli della città romana di Tergeste e probabilmente sede di un'area sacra. L'edificio attuale, a cinque navate, è il risultato dell'unificazione, agli inizi del XIV secolo, di due distinti complessi religiosi.
Uno dei simboli più rappresentativi della città, il Castello di San Giusto sorge sul colle omonimo che domina la città, il suo golfo e il suo entroterra. Il biglietto d'ingresso (non incluso) costa 6€: se volete godere di una bellissima vista sul golfo ne vale la pena!
Il teatro romano di Trieste si trova ai piedi del colle di San Giusto, nel cuore della città, ai margini del centro storico.
Per tutto l'Ottocento questa zona fu il cuore economico di Trieste. Oggi è un'elegante piazza con diversi edifici interessanti e alcune curiosità di cui vi parlerò!
Edificio straordinario nel centro della città. La chiesa di San Spiridione è a forma di croce greca, riprendendo lo stile bizantino delle chiese orientali e presenta una cupola centrale più alta dei quattro campanili.
Chiamata comunemente “Sant’Antonio Nuovo”, prende il nome da una precedente chiesa risalente alla metà del XVIII secolo. Costruita tra il 1828 e il 1849, la nuova chiesa si ispirò alla classica maestosità degli importanti monumenti romani.
Il Canal Grande, lungo 370 metri e largo 28 metri, è uno dei simboli della città: una passeggiata lungo le sue sponde è d'obbligo!
Una passerella sul mare di oltre 200 metri, un luogo magico dove passeggiare e ossigenarsi a qualsiasi ora del giorno, in qualunque stagione, e lasciarsi incantare guardando i tramonti autunnali quando i palazzi delle Rive si tingono di rosso, o se sei un vero temerario, corri sfidando la bora a 100km/h per arrivare in cima alla rosa dei venti e vedi se riesci a resistere!

Matteo is an excellent guide. The explanation was very thorough, providing detailed historical information, curiosities, and various details about the attractions of the place, including places to eat. The Viator application needs improvement because I was unable to connect directly to the link, not even allowing me to copy the address. Therefore, I had to search for the address multiple times on the internet, writing everything by hand and always entering the same data. Inconvenient while on the go! Sonia.
This was an excellent walking tour of Trieste, lots of interesting places to visit, plenty of historical information but not so much that you felt overloaded. You could go at your own pace so there was never a feeling of being rushed. It was easy to download and was great value for money. I would definitely recommend this tour.
This is the first time we used a self guided audio tour. On the whole, it was better than nothing but I probably wouldnt use this one again. The information given was done using an AI voice , there was no variation in tone of voice or speed which made it difficult to understand. There was a complete lack of stories that you would normally have during an in person walking tour and as such it felt like information overload.

However, with this option (which costs less than a pizza 🍕), you get: 👉🏻a pre-written and tested itinerary 👉🏻info on the main monuments and their curiosities 👉🏻info on typical dishes and local restaurants 👉🏻the flexibility to take the tour at your own pace. It was great to see many interesting things at a personal pace and receive descriptions of great interest.
We unexpectedly found ourselves in Trieste as our cruise itinerary was changed last minute so we went on Viator to look for walking tours and found this one. Very informative with both print as well as audio options and we got to see alot. Only recommendation-advise in Viator that this is a Self guided tour (no actual person/guide) AND thar you can start at any time. When we booked that wasn’t made clear. The link that is sent to download is a little cumbersome (could use a little clearer explanation) but once we started it was great! After the tour we took a bus (less than 2 Euros each way) to see Grotto Gigante about 25 mins up the mountain which was well worthwhile!
We were not impressed with the Trieste self guided tour we did. The company had obviously hired an American to read the script about Trieste, and it was just awful. Clearly the guy knew nothing about Trieste, and his pronunciation of all of the Italian locations in the tour was embarrassing. He could not even say Trieste properly. Any Italian listening would have been appalled.
