Kind guide, showed us around the market and ordered/asked the vendors questions for us. Each person in the group had 2000 yen to spend on what they liked - we got sashimi, eel, onigiri, fruit, and egg to name a few.
7 am is not that early. You’re jet lagged and are probably up anyway. I took this 2 hour tour the morning before my afternoon flight home. I met Takako at the central station and we walked to the fish market. This fish market is more accessible than the one in Tokyo because ordinary people shop here, not just wholesale restaurant owners and shopkeepers. I saw fish I’ve never seen before, like blue mussels the size of dinner plates and big fat tiger striped prawns. Did you know there are several different types of nori (seaweed sheets), each with a distinctive taste? Samples are available for you to try. If you’re lucky, a fishmonger will give you a piece of tuna sashimi that’s just hours out of the Pacific Ocean! Takako took me to a local 24-hr sushi place for breakfast, where the chefs have been dishing fish for decades. No tourists here!
