Itinerario
Iniziamo il nostro tour la mattina presto da Atene fino a Meteora. Il nostro autista ti verrà a prendere dal tuo hotel/appartamento o dall'aeroporto/porto. Il tempo di percorrenza è di circa 4,5 ore.
Kalabaka è una città e sede del comune di Meteora nell'unità regionale di Trikala, parte della Tessaglia in Grecia. La popolazione era di 12.000 al censimento del 2011, di cui 8.330 nel comune vero e proprio. I monasteri di Meteora si trovano vicino alla città.
Arriviamo a Meteora e visitiamo fino a tre monasteri. Mozzafiato a prima vista, i Monasteri sono di grande importanza culturale e naturale. Divise dai terremoti, alterate dal vento e dall'acqua per milioni di milioni di anni, queste immense rocce sono un autentico capolavoro di madre natura. La Meteora è una formazione rocciosa nella Grecia centrale che ospita uno dei complessi più grandi e scoscesi dei monasteri ortodossi orientali. I sei (su 24 originari) monasteri sono costruiti su immensi pilastri naturali e massi tondeggianti a forma di collina che dominano il territorio. Meteora è inclusa nell'elenco del patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO e il nome significa "alto", "elevato" ed è etimologicamente correlato a meteora. Si prega di vestirsi modestamente. Si consiglia alle donne di indossare gonne lunghe e maniche lunghe. Se non lo hai, ti verrà data una gonna mentre entri.
Tempo libero per il pranzo in una tradizionale taverna greca con i tuoi amici e la tua famiglia o per fare shopping a Kastraki, un pittoresco villaggio vicino a Meteora.
Le Termopili sono un luogo in Grecia dove nell'antichità esisteva uno stretto passaggio costiero. Deve il suo nome alle sue calde sorgenti sulfuree. Nella mitologia greca l'Hot Gates è uno degli ingressi all'Ade. Le Termopili sono il luogo di una battaglia tra le forze greche e le forze invasori persiane, commemorata da Simonide di Ceo nel famoso epitaffio: "Vai a dire agli Spartani, straniero di passaggio, che qui mentiamo obbedienti alle loro leggi". Le Termopili sono l'unica rotta terrestre abbastanza grande da sopportare qualsiasi traffico significativo tra Lokris e Tessaglia. Per andare da nord a sud lungo la costa orientale della penisola balcanica è necessario l'uso del passo, e quindi le Termopili sono state teatro di numerose battaglie.
Mentre ci lasciamo alle spalle la magnifica Meteora, non trascuriamo la battaglia delle Termopili del 480 a.C., che è stata a lungo argomento di motivazione culturale, poiché è forse l'ultima resistenza militare più famosa di tutti i tempi. Il monumento del Grande Leonida, re di Sparta, alle Termopili, abbellirà il nostro cammino sulla via del ritorno ad Atene nel tardo pomeriggio. Le Termopili sono famose in tutto il mondo per la battaglia che vi ebbe luogo tra le forze greche (in particolare gli Spartani, Lademoni, Tebani e Tespi) e gli invasori persiani, ricordata da Simonide nel famoso epitaffio, "Andate a dire agli Spartani, straniero di passaggio , Che qui obbedienti alle loro leggi noi mentiamo."
Leonida era un re della città-stato greca di Sparta e il 17° della linea Agiad, una dinastia che rivendicava la discendenza dal semidio mitologico Eracle e Cadmo. Leonida era figlio del re Anaxandridas II. Successe al suo fratellastro re Cleomene I al trono nel c. 489 a.C. Leonida ebbe una notevole partecipazione alla seconda guerra persiana, dove guidò le forze greche alleate all'ultima resistenza nella battaglia delle Termopili (480 aC) mentre tentava di difendere il passo dall'esercito persiano invasore; morì in battaglia ed entrò nel mito come capo dei 300 spartani. Mentre i greci persero questa battaglia, furono in grado di espellere gli invasori persiani l'anno successivo.
Nel tardo pomeriggio iniziamo il nostro viaggio di ritorno ad Atene. Il viaggio dura circa 4,5 ore.

Best tour of our entire Greece trip! The private driver “Mike” was wonderful, full of knowledge, fun and great with our young two boys on the trip. Navigating through crazy Athens traffic like a pro and out to the monastery’s on the scenic highway I felt we were in great hands with a real professional, I’ve been on some trips in other counties where I would be on the edge of my seat worried the time about going so far and back, Mike made this trip from start to finish so relaxing and at the end I felt like we were all family. Would highly recommend if making a full day of going to see the monasteries on the tops of mountains you request Mike as your guide and chauffeur!!!

This is the best way to experience Meteora and is well worth the extra cost of a private tour. Our guide Mike was fantastic! He was very professional, accommodating and incredibly knowledgeable on the historical and current aspects of the trip. Mike provided us with great tips and suggestions for visiting each monastery that saved us time and allowed us to enjoy our experience to the fullest. We really enjoyed spending the day with our wonderful driver, Alex. We couldn’t have had a better experience. Alex was professional, courteous, and knowledgeable on Greek history and had an impressive collection of music to entertain us on the drive. We also stopped at the Battle of thermopylae Museum and Memorial on the way to Meteora. Pictures don’t do justice to the sights of the monasteries. We were so impressed by Alex that we scheduled a tour to the Temple of Poseidon with him for the next day. I highly recommend My Athens Transfers.

Be prepared for lots and lots of stairs. Did I mention stairs? Oh yes, there are stairs but the views are almost magical.

Scenic beautiful drive to Meteora in a comfortable vehicle with George. There were 4 of us but we paid just a little more to get a Large Van since we knew we’d be on the road for 4 hours each way. George picked us up at 6:30am and we arrived to Meteora about 4 hours later with a bathroom and coffee/breakfast pickup in between. George recommended 2 monasteries and gave us an opportunity to visit another one or add more panoramic stops; we chose the panoramic stops as it’s absolutely beautiful there. There were many large buses at the Monasteries and we were glad that we had George and our private vehicle as we could pick how long we wanted at each stop vs a set schedule. Lunch was a good selection and reasonably priced. Overall tour was about 12 hours and worth it.
