La nostra prima tappa è il notevole Muallaqat al-Dayr, un antico colombaro scavato nella roccia che si innalza per oltre sette metri di altezza. All’interno, vedrete circa 800 nicchie triangolari scavate su tre livelli – un tempo utilizzate per l’allevamento delle colombe, un’importante attività economica nell’antichità. Una scala moderna rende facile l'accesso e la breve salita di 5-10 minuti ti premia con panorami impressionanti. Riceverai una concisa introduzione storica insieme a una guida ai migliori spot fotografici.
Successivamente, visitiamo il sito conosciuto localmente come Mugharat al-Kaniseh — la Grotta della Chiesa. Questo complesso di epoca bizantina comprende una grande chiesa rupestre (attualmente chiusa per scavi in corso) e una seconda basilica costruita direttamente di fronte ad essa. L'ingresso della grotta si distingue per una facciata decorata caratterizzata da un frontone con croci scolpite. All'esterno, la chiesa in pietra calcarea (21 x 10 metri) rivela ancora la sua abside e le file di posti a sedere. Il pavimento a mosaico un tempo mostrava tessere colorate e recava un’iscrizione greca tradotta come : “Gesù il Salvatore, il Primo e l’Ultimo”.
Iraq Al-Amir – che significa “Grotte del Principe” – prende il nome dal drammatico sistema di grotte scavate nelle scogliere di Wadi al-Seer. Quindici grotte costeggiano la parete rocciosa, facilmente raggiungibili tramite scale in pietra dalla strada. Sei grotte si trovano al livello inferiore, mentre nove grotte superiori sono collegate da una galleria di 300 metri. Da qui, godrete di spettacolari viste panoramiche sulla valle - un punto culminante per fotografi e amanti della natura.
Proseguire per l’Iraq Al-Amir Women’s Cooperative Association, una significativa iniziativa comunitaria lanciata all’inizio degli anni Novanta dalla Fondazione Noor Al Hussein in collaborazione con programmi di sviluppo locale. Situata all'interno di dimore storiche splendidamente restaurate, la cooperativa sostiene le donne locali attraverso l'artigianato tradizionale. Si può osservare la lavorazione della ceramica, la tessitura, il ricamo, la produzione di sapone e la lavorazione della carta a mano. Potrete curiosare e acquistare souvenir autentici fatti in loco, gustare un caffè o un pranzo leggero e utilizzare i servizi disponibili.
Il momento clou del tour è lo straordinario Qasr Al-Abd - uno dei migliori esempi di architettura ellenistica di palazzo in Medio Oriente. Costruita tra il 182 e il 175 a.C., questa struttura calcarea a due piani sorgeva un tempo su una piattaforma sopraelevata circondata da un lago artificiale. Misura circa 40 per 20 metri e si eleva per 13 metri di altezza, è stato costruito con alcuni dei più grandi blocchi di pietra utilizzati nell'architettura antica - compresi blocchi che misurano sette per tre metri. Dopo una breve introduzione storica che evidenzia il suo affascinante sfondo e i dettagli architettonici, avrete il tempo di esplorare in modo indipendente. I wish we booked all our tours with Alex - always on time, very informative and ready to accommodate any and all our wishes. We valued the flexibility Alex offered and the additional attractions we visited. The caves were very interesting and a stop for tea in a cultural village was so relaxing. And of cause the palace, which we enjoyed so much! Highly recommend going on this tour with Alex.

We had a partial day in Amman so wanted to book a half day tour. While previous reviews of Alex's tour were great, this tour far exceeded our expectations. Started off with seeing our ride-an immaculate white Tesla with white interior. Possibly my wife's next car after seeing Alex's! The tour wasn't four hours, it was five. Alex was in no hurry to get us back to the hotel which was great. The tours of the caves and Qasr al-Abd were extremely interesting and off the beaten path-no big tour buses to deal with. Just what we wanted. Alex was very pleasant and knowledgeable. We finished the tour at a Women's Co-Op for tea and coffee. They make all kinds of pottery here and we went into the shop and bought two pieces. Reasonable prices and the money goes to a good cause. All items made here, not elsewhere. Alex even arranged transportation for tonight to go the the Amman airport. Alex indicated he has over twenty different tours he can do. If we had more time in Jordan we would have booked more. This was a great ending to our 16 day trip to Jordan and Israel.
If you are in Jordan, you must visit Hellenistic Palace and Ancient Caves. We book this tour with Alex and indeed did in in style. We learned so much about Hellenistic culture from Alex and visited some amazing ruins which we never thought existed in Jordan. I wish we had more time and gone to see more places. We highly recommend Alex for your day tours from Amman.
After visiting Desert Castles with Alex we also booked a trip to Qasr Abd to see this beautiful greek palace, close to Amman. We actually saw several places on the way to the palace and loved them all. Very interesting tour and the palace is really magnificent with lion and leopard statues. I highly recommend this tour.
That was one of the most beautiful castles in Jordan and I loved all additional stops. It’s one of the best tours I had in a while. Highly recommend!
Alex is a superb guide who has done extensive research in art and archeology. He really loves showing people these amazing sites and is great company.. I spent the whole day with him doing the ancient caves and Quasr-ai-Abd, both of which were fascinating and in stunning settings. Afterwards, he also drove me to see the gorgeous mosaics in Madaba and to photograph and sit by the magnificent Dead Sea, I highly recommend Alex's tours and will be signing up for other excursions with him in 2023.
This tour is absolutely amazing and I have to recommend it to anyone who has even a little bit of time in Amman! I only had one full day to spend in Amman and I feel like this was the best way to spend it. I deeply enjoyed all of the unique and beautiful sites Alex showed me and I had an unforgettable experience. Alex, the tour guide, is very friendly and has a lot of insight on all of the hidden caves and coves around Amman. Excellent tour, very informative and enjoyable. Alex took us on Range Rover to the caves and castle as well as other places. The caves were very interesting to discover and the castle is truly amazing. We had coffee and the workshop and were dropped at the restaurant on the way back. Alex is very polite and flexible. I would highly recommend him for all tours in Jordan.
