Our driver and guide, Ian, picked us up on time at our hotel in Southampton. His van was very clean, driving skills were excellent, and he spoke great English. There were only two of us on this tour and he did a fine job. Our first stop was Winchester Cathedral and the town of Winchester. We strolled the beautiful canal area and enjoyed looking at all the wonderful blooming spring flowers, visited the ruins of the Wolvesey Castle, and then the beautiful cathedral. The cathedral is breathtaking and the history is magnificent. So enjoyed our time here. Next we drove to her childhood home and father’s church in Steventon. This very small church is a wonderful place to sit where Jane sat and to walk where Jane walked. Her mother and sister are buried here. We then enjoyed lunch at Wheatsheaf. The food was delightful. We tried bangers and mash and fish and chips with mushy peas. Our final stop was Chawton and the home she wrote her novels from. This tour included the gardens and house. Loved being in the rooms where it happened!! It was a great day and Ian told us many facts about each location and kept us safe on the roads. I would use Southampton Tours and Ian again.
What an amazing day! Ian was fantastic! He picked us up right on time, (communication was great beforehand also) He was incredibly knowledgeable and very personable. We toured Winchester, the Cathedral Jane Austen’s house and the church where her father was the Reverend. It is truly off the beaten path, and the scenery is so pretty. He took us to a great pub (The Wheatsleaf ) for lunch it was exceptional. All the British classics and then some it was very very good. I would highly recommend this tour if you have the slightest interest in Jane Austen and I would not hesitate to use Ian or any of the tours offered by Undiscovered Cotswolds.
