adi Al-Hitan "Valle delle Balene" è un sito paleontologico nel Governatorato di Faiyum in Egitto, a circa 150 km a sud-ovest del Cairo.[1] È stato designato patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO[2] nel luglio 2005[3] per le sue centinaia di fossili di alcune delle prime forme di balena, gli archeoceti (un sottordine di balene ormai estinto). Il sito rivela prove per la spiegazione di uno dei più grandi misteri dell'evoluzione delle balene: l'emergere della balena come mammifero oceanico da una vita precedente come animale terrestre. Nessun altro luogo al mondo offre il numero, la concentrazione e la qualità di tali fossili, così come la loro accessibilità e la loro collocazione in un paesaggio attraente e protetto.[4] Questo è il motivo per cui è stato aggiunto dall'UNESCO alla lista dei siti protetti del Patrimonio Mondiale.[5] I fossili rinvenuti nel sito potrebbero non essere i più antichi, ma la loro grande concentrazione nell'area e il grado di conservazione è tale che anche alcuni contenuti dello stomaco sono intatti.
La valle di Wadi El-Rayan è un'area di 1759 km2, di cui 113 km2 sono il corpo idrico dominante dei laghi Wadi El Rayan. Si trova a circa 65 km a sud-ovest della città di Faiyum e 80 km a ovest del fiume Nilo. Il Wadi è stato utilizzato per laghi artificiali provenienti dal drenaggio agricolo che ha costituito una riserva dei due laghi Wadi El Rayan separati. La riserva è composta da un lago superiore di 50,90 km2 e un lago inferiore di 62,00 km2, con cascate tra i due. Tra le sorgenti si trovano tre sorgenti sulfuree nella sponda meridionale del basso lago, con estese dune mobili di sabbia. Le cascate di Wadi El Rayan sono considerate le più grandi cascate dell'Egitto. A sud e sud-est delle sorgenti si trova Gabal Manqueer Al Rayan, dove si trovano fossili marini e resti archeologici. Gabal Madwera, vicino al lago inferiore, è noto per le sue estese formazioni dunali. Nel nord-ovest si trova Wadi El Hitan, un protettorato contenente fossili di balene estinte
Ci fermeremo nella valle dei cocomeri per scoprire la zona e scattare foto, poi visiteremo il Lago Magico e giocheremo con il sand board. a metà del tour pranzeremo in un ristorante locale. Alla fine visiteremo la valle di Al-rayan per scattare foto vicino alle cascate

Impressive and off the beaten track. Service was excellent, both the attention of Adi, the person responsible for the organization and that of the two drivers. We went from Cairo to El Fayoun in a mini bus firebomb just for the four of us. Once there, a jeep awaited us with a very expert driver who worked wonders up and down dunes and taking us to places with incredible scenery. We also did sandboarding and visited an oasis with a waterfall on Lake Qarum. Inolvidable.
