Inizia il tuo tour nel tranquillo Chiostro di Sant'Antonio, dove lunette affrescate ti conducono alle sale con affreschi magistrali e dipinti in legno di Beato Angelico. Mentre ti sposti attraverso il Grande Refettorio, la storica Cucina e le aree di servizio, incontrerai le opere di FRA Bartolomeo, un altro importante artista rinascimentale. Nel Refettorio Piccolo, da non perdere l'affresco mozzafiato dell'Ultima Cena di Domenico Ghirlandaio. Quindi, dirigetevi al piano superiore per visitare le celle dei monaci, dove troverete gli incomparabili affreschi del Beato Angelico, tra cui la cella di Girolamo Savonarola, un predicatore ardente i cui sermoni contro la corruzione hanno lasciato un segno duraturo nella storia fiorentina. Il Museo San Marco comprende la maggior parte degli ambienti del convento domenicano progettato da Michelozzo, uno dei massimi architetti del Rinascimento e commissionato da Cosimo "Il Vecchio" de' Medici. Il museo si sviluppa in varie suggestive sale, che contengono uno dei cicli pittorici più famosi al mondo del monaco domenicano Beato Angelico. La visita inizia nell'elegante Chiostro di Sant'Antonio, dove troviamo alcune porte con lunette affrescate che immettono negli antichi saloni che ospitano molte meravigliose opere su tavola e affreschi del Beato Angelico. La visita prosegue con il Grande Refettorio con dipinti di Fra Bartolomeo. Nel piccolo Refettorio è invece conservato un magnifico affresco di Domenico Ghirlandaio, grande artista del '500, raffigurante l'Ultima Cena. Al piano superiore ci aspetta la visita “da non perdere” delle celle dei monaci in cui si possono ammirare gli impareggiabili affreschi del Beato Angelico. La visita del museo si concluderà nei suggestivi ambienti della Biblioteca

I had the good fortune of touring the Fra Angelico exhibit and his frescoes at San Marco convent in Florence with Ilaria. She is a young art historian with remarkable depth—her knowledge of Fra Angelico, the history of the convent, and the wider context of Renaissance Florence brought every corridor and cell to life. It was the highlight of my visit to Florence. Ilaria guided me through the portion of the current Fra Angelico exhibition housed there, but the true magic came when we viewed the monks’ cells. Her explanations of the frescoes were clear, insightful, and delivered with an enthusiasm that never felt rehearsed. You sense immediately that she genuinely loves this material, and that energy makes the experience unforgettable. On top of her expertise, she’s wonderful company: friendly, easy to talk to, and attentive. I never felt rushed, and she answered every question thoughtfully. Despite my interest in art, my knowledge is somewhat thin. Ilaria met me where I was and added depth that was both engaging and enlightening. I can’t recommend her enough.

My mom and I had a fantastic tour of the monastery with a guide who was incredibly knowledgeable about all of the art. She showed us so much, and we were able to walk around independently at the end. We definitely recommend this tour. We’re also glad that we did the morning option—it wasn’t super busy with school groups yet so we really got to see everything up close.

Terrific guide. Terrific art which she carefully explained She went through the history of the convent as well which helped put the art in focus.
Titiana was our guide and she was a wonderful guide and knowledgeable lady. She provided so much information and insights about the art, artists and history which deepened our understanding of what was happening at the time the art was created. She had a great sense of reverence for the art and it’s place in history of the world as well as for Florence. Great tour and interesting insights.
This was one of the most unique museums we have ever visited. Our knowledgeable guide brought to life the living conditions, experiences, and work of those who lived in this convent in the 15th century as well as the life of some of its most notable inhabitants. We would never have gotten as much out of this visit without such a great guide.
