The tour was excellent, the guide was very knowledgeable and very keen to impart his considerable knowledge on the civil war. Would recommend the tour.
Tom was absolutely superb and one of the best tour guides (if not the best) we have ever had. He took the time to get to know us and our interests. He then tailored a day that was both memorable and enjoyable. My son, named after Joshua Chamberlain, in particular was raving about both Tom and the tour afterwards. Tom really engaged with him and got him more interested in the American Civil War. That is incredibly impressive and something not even some teachers can do! We really enjoyed his company and had the best time ever. Highly highly recommend!
We had a guy called Tom, who had excellent knowledge about the Battle and indeed wider American Historical interests. Including great ideas what to do in Washington DC. He was very friendly and helpful.
Bill, Thank you for sharing your family with me and having confidence that your brother Anthony would be satisfied in touring Gettysburg with me. It's rare to have a customer from Ireland who's such a Civil War aficionado. Best wishes for save travel. - Tom
Tom picked us up from our Roslyn hotel on time and through out the trip he was very informative about the battlefield at Gettysburg we had plenty of rest stops this type of tour is way better than the normal 55 people on a bus tour as said Tom was friendly, informative, and just a great person to be with he also had a lot of knowledge about Washington DC and tips of what to do we enjoyed the whole experience immensely.
This was one of five experiences we had with Tom Schultz from DC Military Tours and this one fulfilled an ambition to visit Gettysburg I've held since I was ten years old. Tom has an extensive knowledge of the battle and after visiting the cyclorama (time in there was a little short sadly, due to the number of visitors) and the National Cemetery we toured the field by car following the action day by day. Our stops included the Union delaying actions on day 1 north of the town; the Confederate lines and memorials, Little Round Top and The 'Angle'. You could spend a week on the field and not see everything, that said, Tom packed in an awful lot in the day. His military knowledge of topography and the minds and bodies of fighting men made his commentaries highly detailed and insightful. Tom is much more than a tour guide. He is a historian who also has the knowledge and experience of a 20 year Navy veteran. On a practical level he picks up from your accommodation and drops you back at the end of the tour (this was a 'proper' full day tour). Tom's knowledge is extensive as you would expect. That said, his superpower, if you like, is the ability to pitch and flex your experience to exactly what you are interested in. Your experience will start on the journey to Gettysburg when Tom will talk about the background to the battle and set the scene. Tom doesn't follow a rigidly set route or script, he's too good for that, and he will 'call an audible' if he thinks a stop somewhere would be interesting for you as his listens to your questions and comments. On this occasion I happened to mention Longstreet's Memorial early in the day and later on; there we were. He was also able to enthuse my wife, who was very much humouring my enthusiasm to begin with, so much so that she started listening to Stephen Sears book 'Gettysburg' through Audible on the flight home! Tom's enthusiasm for history is obvious and somewhat infectious, and this makes him a perfect guide.
Colin and Allison, I'm so glad we were able to spend a week together on Civil War themed sites in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Your kind praise is overwhelming. I'm particularly pleased that Allison enjoyed the experience as the Civil War is more of your hobby horse. I'm also most pleased to make your acquaintance as a friend. I will definitely knock on your door in Cornwall when I finally get my act together for a visit to England. Best wishes. Please do come back. - Tom
Awesome experience! Truly experiencing the difficulty faced by the soldiers as we experienced going to the top of Little Round Top, as well as Picket’s Charge. The Cyclorama at the Gettysburg Visitor Center and Museum. And of course, Tom’s incredible knowledge and vibrant stories of the battle!
Joan and Brian, Thank you for allowing me to share this experience with you and your som Drake. I’m glad to have met a kindred spirit with a love of history. I look forward to seeing Drake years from now behind a podium. Tom
Booked a tour to Gettysburg and was very favorably impressed with Tom's knowledge about the three day battle there. He made the tour enjoyable for both me and my wife. Brought the battlefield and those that fought on both sides to life. Tom picked us up promptly at 8:30 a.m. from our hotel and gave us a good overview of what we would be seeing that day. I highly recommend Tom for this tour.
The tour was fantastic. Tom did a great job of explaining every aspect of the three day battle. He is extremely knowledgeable and a true joy to be with. I would highly recommend Tom for this all-day tour. He takes the time to explain the tactics of each general and how the Union forces were able to defeat the Confederate Army. A tour of Gettysburg has been on my bucket list for years now and it seemed like every time I was in Washington on business, I never had the time available for a tour. We were very impressed with Tom and especially his knowledge.
Tom took us on a day tour of Gettysburg - he was so knowledgeable and made the battle come to life for us. He made sure our trip was smooth from pick up, lunch, and even an ice cream stop for our teenage boys. We learned so much and it was a highlight of our visit to the DC area. We liked Tom so much we booked him for a trip the following day to Arlington National Cemetery (so glad we did!)
Wendy, I'm so glad we were able to connect for two straight days of experiences. You're raising two boys who have a great love of history and it shows. Well wishes for your return to Washington State and the new home build in Montana!
