Il monumento fu costruito dall'imperatore Adriano (117-138 d.C.) insieme al ponte Aelius di fronte per diventare un mausoleo per se stesso e per i suoi successori. Nel corso dei secoli divenne il bastione difensivo della Città del Vaticano, il sito di un presidio, una prigione, ma anche gli uffici del Tesoro e dell'Archivio Vaticano. Oggi l'interno del castello può essere visitato con le sue ricche sale affrescate del XVII secolo (Sala di Apollo, Sala di Paolina decorata con le Storie di Alessandro Magno, Sala di Perseo con episodio del mito dell'eroe greco, Sala dell'amore e Psiche), le prigioni, la collezione di armi antiche, la galleria di pittura (con opere di Carlo Crivelli, Luca Signorelli e Dosso Dossi), la collezione di marmi antichi, ceramiche e sculture. La terrazza offre una delle migliori viste panoramiche sul centro storico.

We spent a beautiful afternoon discovering particular corners and knowing secrets and compelling stories and a thank you goes to Vincenzo that mel tell her really amazed us.
We took a tour of Castel Sant’Angelo and Palazzo Farnese with Vincenzo, a guide who is now one of the strong points of every escape to Rome. This time the visit to Castel Sant’Angelo, which apparently is not one of the most attractive monuments in the capital, proved to be the scene of a lesson in history, architecture, life and death, paganism and Christianity. The Farnese palace then was the gem that made the weekend unforgettable. If you visit anything in Rome, the enthusiasm of Vincenzo Spina gives you half the joy.
This was a fabulous tour. Vincent was able to bring the history alive with his great storytelling skills. The Castle was beautiful on its own, but the tour was so worthwhile.
